- Nobel laureate James Watson receives his personal genome sequence
The $1 million, two-month project is a collaboration of 454 Life Sciences and the BCM Human Genome Sequencing Center (HGSC), said Dr. Richard Gibbs, director of the HGSC and a scientific advisor to the Connecticut-based company. The announcement, aside from its meaning to Watson, is significant because it demonstrates that it will be possible in the future to sequence anyone's genome – a goal toward which many sequencing firms are working.
- Faster, low cost sequencing technologies needed to drive era of personalized medicine
DNA testing is transforming health care and medicine, but current technologies only give a snapshot of an individual’s genetic makeup. Any patient wanting a complete picture of their inherited DNA, or genome, would drop their jaw at the sight of the bill — to the current tune of $10 million or more charged for every human or mammalian-sized genome sequenced. Miss Cellania’s post on the Beer Bottle Orchestra is pretty hard to top - but this one comes close (well, it’s geekier, anyhow): the Bubblegum Sequencer. What is the Bubblegum Sequencer? Well, my friend Jim Louderback, CEO of Revision 3, the folks who do a range of Internet video shows, including Diggnation, invited me over for their 4 p.m. Friday video afternoon. On the screen? Gary Vaynerchuk’s daily wine video blog. They watch video (here’s my own really short video that gives you a sneak peak into the room) from around the Internet together as a team.
