Catfish Stew: Foulke Returning to Oakland

OK, here's a curious move: the A's are bringing back Keith Foulke, who had retired last year. It's an eyebrow-raiser in that it's a major league deal, and the A's 40-man roster is full. So unless they cut Alan Embree, someone younger than Foulke will have to be cut to make room for him. I suppose they think they can sneak someone like Wes Bankston, who has been waiver wire fodder twice this year already, through on waivers to the minors without losing him. Still, Foulke isn't going to be around for the next good A's team.lire la suite

  • Catfish Stew: The Big News from Thursday's Game

The A's 11-2 drubbing of Minnesota wasn't filled with much drama, but it was a Big News kind of day nonetheless. The game was not televised, and many people missed the excitement because of work obligations, but do not fear. Catfish Stew has the goods on What It Was Like To Be There. Here's the Big News you want to hear about:

  • Season Preview: Oakland Athletics

Now that Spring Training has started, we're continuing on with Season Previews. Last year, they began as a serious analysis and ended as half-assed haiku, which we're just gonna keep rolling with. Well how about that! • Catfish Stew: Game 6 Summary: Look Away!

As Ken noted in yesterday's game chat, the key to success for the 2008 edition of the Oakland Athletics is for me to not pay attention to them. Consider Friday night when the A's were planting a crooked number on Cleveland in the fifth inning -- I was wandering the aisles of the Alameda Trader Joe's, wondering why they don't stock the chicken lasagna anymore. For Saturday's game, I literally walked outside my home right at first pitch to do gardening and run errands and I didn't return until the game was over.

  • Classic Beef Stew

Classic Beef Stew I’ve always been intrigued by the idea of pressure cooking, of being able to put something in a pot and having it cook in a fraction of the time it normally would. What has always scared me away from it is hearing horror stories about exploding pressure cookers. Even though I had a pressure cooker, I never used it. Anyway, more recently, I acquired an Cuisinart Electric Pressure Cooker with tons of safety features (double locking mechanism that doesn’t allow you to open the unit until the pressure drops to zero.

  • Finding Oakland’s Pho Ao Sen

(Photo by brandondesigns) As summer reaches its August peak (yes, it’s foggy this morning in San Francisco) and as families get desperately creative with their staycations, I’ve been reminiscing about those old car trips of my youth: my mom hopelessly lost somewhere between Denver and St. Louis, my sister and I — oblivious in the backseat — singing “Popeye, the Sailor Man!” over and over and over and over.
