• Panasonic Announces Slim Notebook Blu-ray Drive

  At nine point five millimeters thick (3.7 inches), Panasonic's new notebook Blu-ray drive will be heading for a svelte laptop near you. The skinny drive is 3.2mm thinner than the previous smallest, and in addition to burning Blu-ray (BD-R and BD-RE) at double speed, it'll also handle regular old DVDs and CDs. The question is, does anybody care? When was the last time you used the optical drive in your notebook? I'll bet that it was something that an external burner could have taken care of.

• Coskata Ethanol breakthrough announced at Detroit International Autos Show, Partnership with GM

  Rick Wagoner, Chairman of General Motors, announced at the Detroit North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) that GM has taken an equity stake in an ethanol manufacturer called Coskata, and that Coskata has developed a breakthrough process for producing ethanol that is far more efficient than traditional corn processes.  In fact, the process is so much more efficient Coskata believes they can produce ethanol for less than $1.
