Veepstakes

The possibilities for McCain are endless.

McCain’s choices for vice president are being debated.

In a show of bipartisanship not seen since 1864, he could reach across the aisle and pick a Democratic senator with whom he has worked well.

But somehow the McCain-Feingold ticket just doesn’t sound right.

Likewise he could go with a woman who is an African-American.

But I don’t think he can get Mozambique native Teresa Heinz Kerry to agree to be on the ticket.

Thompson would sew up the male vote.lire la suite

Chris Cillizza runs down the choices for running mate. Don Carcieri? The Washington Post’s political blogger extraordinarie turns to the quadrennial guessing of who will be the VP on the tickets. He says the Democratic nomination is up for grabs, but says McCain has the clear edge over Mitt’s money. Alas, Fred does not make his list. My dream of a Grumpy Old Men ticket is dashed. Cillizza books the odds from top to bottom for McCain as Mike Huckabee.

CQ continues its contest for Republican Sen. John McCain. I have a few suggestions for Democratic Sen. Barack Obama. First on McCain. I’d go with Republican Gov. Mitt Romney. he has money and helps McCain in the Western states, which have 5 Mormon senators among them. But CQ Politics has its veep madness going. Round 2. Vote. Now for Obama. Just say no to Democratic Sen. Hillary Clinton. Two words.

  • The Early Word: Let the Veepstakes Begin

As The Times first reported yesterday, Club McCain is open for the weekend in Sedona, Ariz., where some of the G.O.P.'s most electable up-and-comers and swingingest-staters get a chance to mingle with the presumptive nominee. Adam Nagourney reports that Govs. Charlie Crist of Florida and Bobby Jindal of Louisiana, as well as Mitt Romney, are set to hang with Senator John McCain at his ranch for a “social weekend.

  • The Early Word: Veepstakes, Democrat Edition

As first lady, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton spent eight years standing behind a president in the White House. And now, if she can't get there on her own, former President Bill Clinton is said to be musing, perhaps she ought to do it again – as vice president. Though both campaigns have shrugged off such suggestions, some think the move would help unify the party. And, of course, Senator Barack Obama.

Veepstakes at the Fix Chris Cillizza at The Fix has its most likley VP picks up. From least likely to most: Obama: Hillary Clinton; John Edwards; Kathleen Sebelius; Jim Webb; Ted Strickland McCain:Joe Lieberman; Charlie Crist; John Thune; Mitt Romney; Tim Pawlenty I would move John Edwards, Joe Lieberman, and Charlie Crist into the never-going-to-happen category. I am more and more convinced that Charlie Crist's name is mentioned so frequently because that's who the mainstream media would like McCain to pick.

  • What's Really at Stake in the Veepstakes:

Right now, there is all sorts of gossip and speculation about who John McCain and Barack Obama are going to pick as their vice presidential nominees. Most of that speculation focuses on the possible impact of the vice presidential nominee on the 2008 campaign. However, that is probably the wrong issue to focus on. Very rarely does a vice presidential nominee have a decisive impact on a presidential race.
