Hillary: I’ve Know Mrs. Bhutto Many Years
From a campaign press release:
Statement of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton on the Death of Benazir Bhutto
“I am profoundly saddened and outraged by the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, a leader of tremendous political and personal courage. I came to know Mrs. Bhutto over many years, during her tenures as Prime Minister and during her years in exile. Mrs. Bhutto’s concern for her country, and her family, propelled her to risk her life on behalf of the Pakistani people. She returned to Pakistan to fight for democracy despite threats and previous attempts on her life and now she has made the ultimate sacrifice.

Candidates React to Bhutto’s Death
Updated | 5:15 p.m. The assassination of Benazir Bhutto is already rippling through the race for the White House, and presenting a real-time test for candidates to show how their campaigns react to an unfolding international crisis. Several of the candidates, in appearances and statements today, noted that they had had personal contact with Ms. Bhutto. Appearing in Urbandale this morning, Mr. McCain addressed the situation right off the bat and without prompting, calling the assassination “a great tragedy” and adding that the United States must “make sure this doesn’t unravel” given the country’s nuclear capabilities. Senator Joseph Biden emphasized at a press conference in Des Moines that he was speaking as the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations committee. [lien] [EN]
Bhutto Assassinated Dems Try to Capitalize
Cross-Posted FROM Gribbit's Word Candidates for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States are now clambering to be seen as more effective in dealing with foreign policy crises. Hillary has come forward pointing to her non-existent experience and saying that she actually met Benazir Bhutto. Edwards in an attempt to not be left out pointed out that he's visited Pakistan and met with Bhutto as well. Obama too attempted to capitalize on this cowardly assassination in Pakistan. Republicans are not immune to this as well. John McCain appeared on FoxNews although I believe the only capitalizing that he did was to get his face on camera. It is my belief that Fox asked him to appear and he said sure. He condemned the attack and said that our government should be coming down on the side of the rule of law which is exactly what President Bush said. [lien] [EN]
Intelligence Sources say Rogue Pakistani Military involved in Bhutto Assassination
[Guest post by DRJ] The Middle East Times reports that Indian and other intelligence sources say jihad supporters in the Pakistan military were involved in the assassination of Benazir Bhutto: “Lower and middle level officers of the Pakistani army and the Pakistani air force were involved in the killing of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, according to various intelligence sources, including members of India’s counter-intelligence service. Well-informed sources have told the Middle East Times that these rogue elements of the Pakistani military support the jihadis and share their extremist views of an ultra-conservative form of Islam. One former CIA official told a Middle East Times source that, “It’s worrying when half of your lower or mid-level Pak intelligence analysts have bin Laden screen. [lien] [EN]
Hillary’s Ignorance About Pakistan Elections
An op-ed by Thomas Houlahan from the Middle East Times: How credible is Hillary Clinton on Pakistan? December 31, 2007 Last weekend after returning to my office from the television studios of a major network where I had done a brief segment on the security of Pakistan’s nuclear weapons, I turned on CNN to watch their coverage of the Bhutto assassination’s aftermath. Sen. Hillary Clinton was telling Wolf Blitzer that she didn’t think “the Pakistani government at this time under President Musharraf has any credibility at all.” She then said something that betrayed a serious lack of knowledge about Pakistan and called her own credibility on the subject into serious question. “If President Musharraf wishes to stand for election,” she told Blitzer, “then he should abide by the same rules that every other candidate will have to follow. Shocker: Bhutto’s Son, Husband Succeed Her
From those champions of representative democracy at the AFP: Asif ali Zardari, right, husband of Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto attends his wife’s funeral with their son Bilawal Bhutto, second from left, at her family’s mausoleum, in Garhi Khuda Bakhsh, near Larkana, Pakistan on Friday, Dec. 28, 2007. Bhutto’s son takes over party, husband is co-chairman by Hasan Mansoor NAUDERO, Pakistan (AFP) - The party of Pakistan’s murdered opposition leader Benazir Bhutto named her 19-year-old son as its new leader Sunday and announced it would contest upcoming general elections. Bilawal Bhutto, a student at Britain’s Oxford University, was named party chairman at an emergency meeting, taking the reins of the party formerly led by his mother and grandfather. [lien] [EN]
Hillary Still Lying About Knowing Bhutto
From an adoring Washington Post: U.S. first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton with her daughter Chelsea, left, and Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, holding hands with her son Bilawal and daughter Bakhtawar, take a stroll in this March 26, 1995 file photo, in the garden of the prime minister’s residence, in Islamabad. Clinton, Obama Seize on Killing Reactions Illustrate Their Key Differences By Anne E. Kornblut and Shailagh Murray Friday, December 28, 2007; A01 DES MOINES, Dec. 27 — News of Benazir Bhutto’s assassination came just hours before Sen. Barack Obama delivered what his campaign had billed as the “closing argument” in his bid for the Democratic presidential nomination Thursday, forcing his campaign to scramble to incorporate the Pakistani opposition leader into his message of change. What Time of Year Is It, Hillary? No C-Word Present in Her ‘Presents’ Ad
I’ve noted previously that Old Media has developed a squeamishness towards describing this time of year in business stories as the “Christmas shopping season.” In the midst of media criticism of Mike Huckabee’s Christmas ad, including the Whoopi Goldberg-Joy Behar exchange on “The View” noted earlier today by NewsBusters’ Justin McCarthy, how interesting it is that one of Hillary Clinton’s latest ads in Iowa joins in the C-word sqeamishness (HT Hot Air, whose Bryan Preston calls it “Hillary’s Unintentionally Revealing Christmas Ad”). The ad shows Mrs. Clinton wrapping presents for the American people, including “Universal Health Care,” “Alternative Energy,” “Bring Troops Home,” and “Middle Class Tax Breaks” (where have we heard that undelivered promise before?). Defiant Hillary on Meet The Press
There has been much written about Senator Hillary Clinton regarding attacks of sexism and whether her campaign is using racism against Senator Barack Obama. Hillary made her first appearance on Meet the Press this morning and Tim Russert started the hour asking her about statements she made about Obama and Martin Luther King Jr. and this article in the SC newspaper The State- Clinton Camp Hits Obama. TPM has more on Hillary's remarks and The New York Times continual truncating of her initial comments and the ramifications of distortion. While my personal feelings about Clinton are still drifting in synaptic valleys, I have to give her kudos for handling Russert. She remained a polished professional and refused to allow him to distort her words or that of her husband. Handling Russert’s often vicious attacks is quite the art. [lien] [EN]
Hillary Clinton Endorses One-Legged Ex-Mrs. Beatle [Why Not]
Hillary Clinton first met Heather Mills, the now-former Mrs. Paul McCartney, on September 10, 2001. The day before the world changed! Except some things never change, like how much Hillary Clinton loves Heather Mills, a woman who changed the world by marrying a Beatle, and only having one leg, and posing for dirty pictures in the '80s. Also she fights land mines. Hillary Clinton apparently had four minutes to kill? We've yet to hear a suitable explanation for this video. But it's after the jump! [lien] [EN]
Hillary's Bosnia Story Her First Lie In 12 Years [The Bosnia Trip]
Hillary went on Pittsburgh radio station KDKA today to talk more about that time snipers were shooting at her in Bosnia -- you know, the thing that never happened. Yesterday she claimed that she "misspoke" when she said "I remember, particularly, a trip to Bosnia, where the welcoming ceremony had to be moved inside because of sniper fire," as a qualification to be president of the United States. In today's interview she asks for a little slack, because it's the first time she's misspoken in 12 years: "You know I have written about this and described it in many different settings and I did misspeak the other day. This has been a very long campaign. Occasionally, I am a human being like everybody else. The military took great care of us. They were worried about taking a First Lady to a war zone and took some extra precautions and worried about all sorts of things. [lien] [EN]
