You know, everyone's spent so much time today opining on Hillary Clinton briefly choking up that people have missed an actually embarrassing Clinton moment. Trailing in New Hampshire and South Carolina, and tied in a new national Gallup Poll, Clinton's decided to take a page from the playbook of the Republican party, and try to...try to...SCARE YOU ABOUT THE BROWN PEOPLE UNDER YOUR BED AIEEEEEE! “I don’t think it was by accident that Al Qaeda decided to test the new prime minister,” she said. “They watch our elections as closely as we do, maybe more closely than some of our fellows citizens do…. Let’s not forget you’re hiring a president not just to do what a candidate says during the election, you want a president to be there when the chips are down.”You know, it doesn't sound any less obnoxious coming from a Democrat than it does coming from a Republican. For one thing I'm a pretty cynical guy and most likely to believe that she's playing the crowd. I also can't help remembering that Bill Clinton was masterful at this and could cry on cue, bite that lower lip and just go for the heart. While I don't think that Hillary is even in the same league as Bill on this sort of thing, she could have taken lessons from the man himself. But the larger question is how does this play. I think Obama is on a momentum swing right now, He's going to win NH big, and he's moving up huge in South Carolina. Hillary's stopper is going to be New York, Florida (with all the ex New Yorkers) and California. [lien] [EN]

Angry Women Back Clinton

So why did Hillary Clinton win tonight? That’s gonna be the question, and it’s a good one. One can cite the “Bradley Effect,” and that was perhaps part of the answer. But not all of it, nor even most of it. No, Clinton won tonight because in the last few days, the level of misogyny directed toward her had reached a fever pitch, and the women of New Hampshire decided that they’d had enough of it. Clinton has, of course, faced coded attacks on her gender throughout the campaign, just as Obama has faced attacks on his race. This is nothing new for Hillary, of course; she’s been facing attacks for being too self-actualized since 1992. But starting with Saturday night’s debate, those attacks became less coded and more overt. I’m not sure exactly why; maybe, with Clinton in dire straits. [lien] [EN]

CLINTON WINS, PUNDITS LOSE

My latest Pajamas Media column is up and it deals with Hillary’s surprise win last night in the New Hampshire primary. A sample: Living in this little internet cocoon being bombarded by the daily spin of pundits, prognosticators, “experts,” and the campaigns themselves, it is quite easy to fall for a buzz that everyone – and I mean everyone – was touting. Obama, the annointed one. Obama, the crowned one. Obama, the beautified. And his opposite number in the race was ready to quit, was weeping from exhaustian and frustration, resigned to being buried by the Obama juggernaut. But someone neglected to tell Hillary Clinton that her defeat was foreordained and in the stars. So the candidate continued a killer schedule and doggedly soldiered on, refusing to bow to what everyone in Chrsitendom was telling her was going to be a smashing. [lien] [EN]

Hillary Clinton Wants Delegates Heard (especially from Michigan and Florida)

[Guest post by DRJ] This year Michigan Democrats moved up their primary to January 15 in order to have a greater influence on the selection of the Democratic Presidential nominee. However, under Democratic National Committee rules, only Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire and South Carolina are allowed to hold primaries before February 5. As a result of this dispute, Democratic candidates Obama, Biden, Richardson, and Edwards withdrew from the Michigan primary and agreed not to campaign in Michigan. Hillary Clinton, Kucinich, Dodd, and Gravel also agreed not to campaign in Michigan but their names remained on the ballot. Those four candidates split the Michigan vote with Hillary as the big winner. A similar dispute arose in the Florida primary scheduled for January 29. Now Hillary Clinton has issued a statement urging that the Florida and Michigan delegates should nevertheless be seated at the Democratic Convention so the voices of Michigan and Florida voters will be heard.
