Belated USSM 2007 Music post

The last off-season post was a hit with some people and annoying to others. If you’re in the latter group, please, don’t read any further. Plug: here’s the unofficial last.fm USSM group. DMZ’s Top Ten of 07, not in a particular order – LCD Soundsystem, Sound of Silver. I feel the same way I did about “Funeral” — I listened to it a couple of times and it was good, and then there was one listen where I just got it. The National, Boxer. Mmmmmmm. Ridiculously good listening. Modest Mouse, We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank. I love Modest Mouse so much. Neon Bible, Arcade Fire. The Meaning of 8, Cloud Cult. Myth Takes, !!! Learn to Sing Like a Star, Kirsten Hersh. I really like this album, but it also kind of grates on me to the point I don’t listen to it that often. [lien] [EN]

Top Ten Music Stories of 2007

This was a turbulent year for the music business, as the copyright-related lawsuits continued and music sales plummeted ever faster.  But there were also some glimmers of hope, as the labels starting to budge, ever so slightly, in terms of making deals with new businesses.  We also saw a few new ideas emerge on how to do music in the digital age. These stories seem to sum the year up nicely; I'll be chatting about them this afternoon on WNYC's Soundcheck show at 2pm est (also on XM 133 and to be archived here) as part of the shows Critic's Week feature. Some entries were suggested by Listening Post readers. - Radiohead released In Rainbows. - Two major labels (EMI and Universal) moved away from digital rights management. - The Copyright Royalty Board determined potentially disastrous per. Warner's Entire Digital Music Catalog For Sale on Amazon as MP3s

On Thursday, Warner Music Group began selling music on Amazon in the MP3 format without the digital rights management that hampers many of the files sold in iTunes and other online music stores. Listening Post confirmed with spokespeople for both Amazon and Universal Music Group that the deal includes all of the label's digitized music catalog -- "hundreds of thousands of tracks," according to WMG.  Amazon's store now contains over 2.9 million tracks --all in the unprotected MP3 format -- including music from three of the world's four major labels.  (EMI began offering its digital catalog to Amazon in May, and Universal has experimented with MP3s on Amazon since August.) The WMG spokesperson also confirmed that the label did not include watermarks in the MP3 files. [lien] [EN]

EBU announces landmark radio agreement with UEFA

Geneva, 1 February 2008 - The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) is delighted to announce that it has signed a landmark radio agreement with UEFA for the European Football Championship in 2008. Under the agreement, public service radio broadcasters will have access to technical reporting facilities at each of the matches in next summer’s tournament. The agreement covers radio broadcasters in 15 countries who were not already included in existing TV contracts for the tournament. The EBU Radio Director, Raina Konstantinova, said the EBU was fulfilling its public service mission by ensuring that coverage of the event could reach the widest possible audience. “This is good for radio and good for football,” said Ms. Konstantinova. “Broadcasters who could not otherwise have covered the event will be able to offer their audiences live. 'Spider-Man: The Musical' Open Call Seeks Vocally Gifted Peter Parker Types

A little over a year ago, we noted that celebrated director/visual-flourishist Julie Taymor would be tackling perhaps her most challenging source material yet. This project would afford no opportunities for portentous lion births, or soldiers lugging Lady Liberty across a model Vietnam in an extremely literal interpretation of a Beatles lyric. Rather, Taymor set about adapting Spider-Man into a Broadway musical. Helping to sell audiences on a hovercraft-enabled lead villain whose big showstopper, "Everything's Coming Up Pumpkin Bombs," closes the first act is none other than U2's Bono and The Edge, who came on board as composers. Now all that's left to round out this spider-shit insane idea is you, triple-threat Tobey and Kirsten types! [lien] [EN]

Hayden Panettiere has a new single and music video

Hayden Panettiere loudly proclaimed that she wanted to be a pop star, and my goodness she stuck to her guns. Despite a mounting heap of evidence that she shouldn't have. I really like Hayden. I don't watch her show, but I appreciate that she doesn't go out clubbing and DUIing every night like a lot of other actresses her age. And she is super passionate about dolphins. Not normally something that makes me change my opinion about someone, but I like that she actually has something to say. So Hayden vowed to become a music star, and unfortunately it appears that she's too hot for any producers to have said no. Which they should have. If there's any young starlet that I would wish to have a successful crossover musical career, I guess it'd be Hayden. But I don't think that's going to happen. [lien] [EN]
