What Do Chris Paul, Dwight Howard, LeBron James, and Tim Duncan have in Common?

The NBA has instituted a variety of caps on payroll.  There is the famous salary cap, which limits how much each team can spend on its payroll.  There is also a maximum salary, which is a cap on individual player salaries (and yes, this would be better called a salary cap).  And finally there is a cap on rookie pay, which limits how much a draft choice can earn on his first contract. All of these restrictions are designed to limit a player’s pay.  And whenever we observe an employer trying to limit an employee’s pay, we suspect that those workers might be exploited. As noted before, exploitation is defined as a level of pay that is below the revenue the worker is generating for the firm.  If a worker is paid $10 an hour, but only generates $8 of value, then that worker is not exploited. Chris Webber and Don Nelson Reunion? Tiger Dominates Buick; Roger Clemens Goes Damage Control; LeBron James Sends Kobe and the Lakers On A Slide

Chris Webber and Don Nelson Reunion? Tiger Dominates Buick; Roger Clemens Goes Damage Control; LeBron James Sends Kobe and the Lakers On ASlide Calm yourself Michelle. Be EZ. Coming out of Michigan in ‘93 it seemed Chris was headed for the same success he’d had in college. The second sophomore drafted first overall (Magic), was in a position early to contend for a championship with the passionate Warriors. Remember how Spreewell was dunking on everyone? GS was amassing multiple 50 win seasons with the likes of Spreewell, Chris Mullin, multi-talented Billy Owens and current Mavs coach Avery Johnson. They were a dynamic bunch who stuffed the stat sheet with all around contributions from almost the entire roster. Webber put up 17 and 9 on his way to winning Rookie of the Year. [lien] [EN]

LeBron James Injured?

This just in: LeBron James has left the game against Boston with what appears to be a leg injury.  With a little over 4 minutes left in the second half, James hurt his right leg either going to the hoop, or in landing.  He struggled to get off the court, and soon left courtside headed for the locker-room, limping badly. Without a doubt, should James be injured it will bode poorly for Cleveland.  He simply is their team. Edit: James returned from the ankle injury to score 26 points.  The city of Cleveland breathed a collective sigh of relief… [lien] [EN]

Magic Johnson on Miami Heat center Alonzo Mourning’s knee injury that he suffered Wednesday night against the Atlanta Hawks: “Alonzo (Mourning) has meant so much to the game of basketball, both on the court and off. Off the court he’s done more than anybody in the city of Miami, he is a guy who is relentless with what he wants to do for children in Miami. (On Wednesday night) I told him, ‘Now you start your life after basketball, continue on the path of giving back and you can start being a business man. This (injury) just sped up the process.’” Barkley on Heat center Alonzo Mourning’s charity efforts. [lien] [EN]

Is Vogue Racist For Choosing This LeBron James /Gisele Bundchen Cover?

A Vogue cover featuring basketball player LeBron James and model Gisele Bundchen is stirring up controversy, with some commentators decrying the photo as perpetuating racial stereotypes. The image, with James baring his teeth, dribbling a ball with one hand and the other around Bundchen’s tiny waist, has been likened to King Kong and Fay Wray. (Watch a video of the making of the cover at style.com) A Vogue spokesperson said the pair “look beautiful together” and James told The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer he was pleased with the cover, saying he was “just showing a little emotion.” But magazine analyst Samir Husni said, “When you have a cover that reminds people of King Kong and brings those stereotypes to the front, black man wanting white woman. Should the Rookie of the Year Help His Team Win More Games?

Given that the objective of NBA teams is to win (at least on the court), one would think that player evaluation would focus on that goal.  When we look at the race for Rookie of the Year, though, it’s hard to see that focus. The leading candidates for this award are Kevin Durant, Yi Jianlian, and Al Horford.  Only one of these players, though, is playing for a team that has improved noticeably on last season’s results. Last year the Sonics won 31 games with an efficiency differential (offensive efficiency minus defensive efficiency) of -3.0.  This season the Sonics have a differential of -6.1.  In sum, the Sonics with Durant are not as good. The Milwaukee Bucks won 28 games last season with a differential of -4.6.  This year the team’s differential is . [lien] [EN]

Why Gilbert Arenas Matters More than LeBron James

Gilbert briefly mentions a book by Will Leitch of Deadspin in his latest blog: Have you seen the new book that came out, God Save the Fan? Will Leitch came out with the book. Thank you Will Leitch! Got to give a shout out to Will Leitch and Deadspin for coming out with the book God Save the Fan. I'm just going to tell you guys to go get the book, because I'm in Chapter 2. I picked it up today and immediately read the chapter about Gilbert and LeBron. It is definitely an interesting read and even if you don’t want to buy the book, you should at least read the Gilbert chapter (6 pages) at your local bookstore, if you get a chance. Leitch’s last sentence in the chapter sums it up best: … in twenty years, when we think of LeBron James, we will think of Gatorade. [lien] [EN]
