Mitchell Report Open Thread

Oh the drama!

Figured we could use a nice clean new open thread for the Mitchell Report findings since the speculation diary is already up in the 60s for comments.

This says we'll be getting MVP's and All-Stars, but considering Ken Caminiti was an MVP I wouldn't get all excited or anything.

Go to town folks.

Open Thread

It’s quite clear people want to argue about the validity of the surface thermometer record. Personally, I think it’s a non-issue which is harped on by denialists because they don’t have a real case. But, it’ll drive my hit count through the roof. So this is an open thread for people to discuss anything *climate-related*. This is not for discussion of sex, religion, politics, or spongebob squarepants. I’ll point out that there are certainly flaws in temperature data, just as there are flaws in all data, but NASA GISS has worked very hard to correct for non-climate factors. The issue has been beaten to death on numerous threads on numerous blogs, so I doubt I’ll be commenting further on this thread. Those who want to discuss the surface record, the sun. [lien] [EN]

Open Thread

A reader mentioned, in a comment on another thread, that the discussion had gone off topic. So, here’s another “open thread” for readers to discuss — whatever, as long as it’s related to climate. No pokemon, no American Idol, no college basketball. The next installment of the PCA series is pretty close to completion, I fully expect to have it up this week (probably by Friday). But please don’t discuss that here! General PCA discussion can go on the existing PCA threads, and discussion of the hockey-stick PCA issues should wait for the upcoming post. Please use this thread for discussion of things not directly related to the topic of other threads. [lien] [EN]

Open Thread

It seems some people want to discuss things in threads to which they don’t belong. So, here’s another open thread about climate science. If you want to discuss political candidates, talk about their climate-science policies but not other things; that’s just too big a can of worms. And if you want to discuss other climate-related topics, feel free. [lien] [EN]

Open Thread

Just so it’s easy for eveyone to find an open thread, where discussion of topics not covered in other threads is appropriate, here’s a new one. [lien] [EN]

Open Thread

I notice that folks are discussing things which are only slightly related to the thread, or not related at all, probably because there’s no open thread appropriate for such discussion. So here’s an open thread. No Britney, no Master’s tournament, no more Bach-vs-Mozart wars, and let’s NOT discuss the hockey stick. That’s not off limits permanently — but after literally weeks of back-and-forth on that topic on many threads, this blog is taking a week off hockey. [lien] [EN]

Open Thread (#2)

By request, here’s a new open thread, and it’s numbered (#2, although there are more than that). Please no Britney Spears, no American Idol, etc. -------------------- Possibly related posts: (automatically generated) · Breaking the Ice [lien] [EN]

Open Thread #3

Because the other open thread is getting pretty full. [lien] [EN]

Open Thread #4

Here’s a new open thread, to keep the previous ones from getting too full. By the way, I’m going away this weekend (starting today), my wife and I are celebrating our anniversary. So, moderation may be slower than usual. [lien] [EN]

Open Thread #7

Open thread #6 is getting pretty big, which can make the page load slowly for some users. So here’s open thread #7. [lien] [EN]

Open Thread #11

Here’s a new open thread. Also a notice: I’ve been so intensely busy lately I haven’t had much time for the blog. This condition will continue for at least another week (I hope, not much longer than that), at which time I intend to resume blogging on a regular basis. In the meantime, carry on with discussion; I’ll try to be diligent moderating comments. [lien] [EN]

Open Thread: Cubs vs. Phillies, Saturday 4/12, 6:05 CT

Knowing this will probably start a firestorm of discussion, MLB and the MLBPA reached an agreement on more stringent drug testing yesterday; as a result, no one named in the Mitchell Report will be subject to any penalties (i.e., suspensions). Further: Friday's agreement also ensures there will never be another Mitchell report, as both sides agreed to keep players' names private until discipline is imposed in any future probe. The sides also agreed a player would be given any allegations and evidence against him before any investigatory interview. Will this do any good? Only time will tell. Also today, Maury Brown wrote at Baseball Prospectus on the TV blackout rules, which I just wrote about last Monday. The BP article is behind their pay wall, but I thought this part of it was important. [lien] [EN]

2008 Draft, Open Thread: Reds select Yonder Alonso

[Note by Rick House, 06/05/08 12:44 PM EDT ] Edited to add poll. -Rick It's that time. The time when each team is reminded how bad they were the previous season by being compensated with picks as terrific as they were terrible and horrific. We were the 7th-worst team in baseball last year, so we're rewarded with our highest pick since 2004, when we took Homer Bailey with the seventh pick. (Bill Bray went 13th in that draft. Not the 13th round; 13th.) This is gonna be a rough sketch of our possible first-round pick at No. 7. Please feel free to post draft news, including late-round selections and profiles, as there are a lot of you who know much more about amateur baseball than me. Draft essentials WHEN: 2 p.m. today WHERE: Lake Buena Vista, Fla. TV: ESPN2, first two rounds plus compensation picks In my non. [lien] [EN]

Friday Open Thread: Where's your head on the Reds?

I may have scraped the bottom of the barrel for Reds new right now. Today is the day that free agents can start talking with other teams. As you know, that probably means the end of David Weathers's tenure with the Reds. Assuming Javier Valentin and Matt Belisle aren't back, that means the only players left from the 2005 squad are Ryan Freel, EdE, and Aaron Harang. Doesn't that seem like a lot of turnover in just 3 years? Granted that team was bad, but for a team that doesn't play much on the free agent market, they sure have gone through a lot of players. The latest word from Walt Jocketty (via Fay) is that "the Reds will look to trades first and free agency second." Jocketty added: “I don’t think that’s going to happen right away,” Jocketty said. “It could. You never know until you start talking to people but I don’t expect it. [lien] [EN]

What Does the FSU Cheating Scandal and the Mitchell Report Have in Common?

By JP, from Pyle of List  With the release of the Mitchell Report this week, after months of feverish anticipation, baseball fans and the media finally have an official list of names connected to performance enhancing drugs. While there is some substantial evidence linking these names to the indiscretions we always suspected them of, the distinct lack of a “smoking gun” detracts from the report’s impact. However, it is the closest thing we have to proof that hundreds of players in MLB have been cheating for roughly a decade. Across town in College FootballVille, 25 FSU football players were caught cheating in their online class. Several FSU employees were also implicated in the scandal. First of all, how in the world do these guys have online classes in the first place? Secondly. [lien] [EN]
