Over 1.5 million copies of Star Wars:TFU have been shifted since the game launched last week, making it the fastest-selling Star Wars game of all time. Actually, is that such a great record? Hard to tell without knowing the other figures for context - anyway, it has sold a lot and that is good. LucasArts say that the initial publishing run of 4.3 million copies is unlikely to last long, and the game is going into a a second 'printing' earlier than expected. iPhone Could Hit $99, Analyst Says [Apple]

Apple-obsessed financial analyst Charlie Wolf said today in a research note that Apple could cut the price of the 8GB iPhone to $99. Why? Apparently, just because they can. At least, based on his guesstimations on the iPhone margins and costs, and we can only guess, his famed telepathic powers, animal entrails reading abilities, and the shiny 8-ball he has hidden in the bottom drawer of his work desk. According to Wolf, his estimations puts the price of the unsubsidized iPhone 3G at $666 (because Steve Jobs is really a codename for Satan). That gives Apple a nearly 50 percent gross margin for each iPhone, and a $450 subsidy from AT&T. And from there, boom, jump into the theory of a $99 iPhone 3G 8GB with a "comfortable 42.3 percent margin". He also says that a $100 price cut could "double or triple" (or quadruple. [lien] [EN]

iPhone Passes the RAZR to Become Best Selling Phone in the US This Quarter [IPhone]

Just days after supplanting the BlackBerry in customer satisfaction among business wireless smartphone users, Apple's iPhone has taken down another cellphone icon, Motorola's Razr, in terms of total sales for the quarter. According to NPD (the leading wireless research firm) the iPhone outsold the Razr in the 3Q—representing the first changing of the guard in three years. This change comes despite a higher price tag in the midst of a struggling economy. In fact, NPD notes that overall sales of cellphones are down 15% from last year. [I personally don't know anyone who bought a RAZR, but they are carried on every US carrier. Just goes to show how disconnected gadget heads are from the rest of the world in their tastes. —B.Lam] The NPD Group: iPhone 3G Leads U. [lien] [EN]

AT&T Won't Sell You iPhone Because "You're Going To Unlock It" [Complaints]

Colin writes:I went into my nearest ATT store and there were two CSR's behind the counter- I asked for an 8gig Refurb iPhone thats being sold for $249 and the kid said sure and walked me over to the desk. The next words out of his mouth "What is your social security number?" No "How are you today?" "Thanks for coming in" No, apparently they just want my credit report to see if I am "worthy" "Um. What? Why do you need that?" He tells me that its necessary for activating a new account "I don't want an account now, I will activate on iTunes later" He turns and asks some other CSR if they can sell it without activation- to which the other CSR says "No" I say, ok, whatever, I'll buy the phone and just cancel the service, then I can keep the phone because I am paying full price for it. "No. [lien] [EN]

O'Reilly sells iPhone book to "hackers" [Apple]

Tech publisher O'Reilly Media has released a book targeted to unsanctioned developers on Apple's iPhone mobile platform. iPhone Open Application Development tells coders how to write programs for "jailbroken" iPhones -- those that have been hacked to remove Apple's block on unsanctioned software. All of which seems outdated, now that Apple has released instructions for writing approved apps. O'Reilly will surely rush out another book on that subject. But why not just sell one book to everyone? That seems easier. [lien] [EN]

Apple Sells One Million iPhones, So What? [IPhone]

Everyone's reporting how remarkable it is that Apple was able to sell a million iPhones in just five days, but let's think about this for a moment, shall we? As TechDirt politely points out, though, it would have been newsworthy had it been a US-only event, it wasn't, it was global, with millions of people eligible to get the new handset. It's also very worth pointing out that globally Nokia sells 1.28 million phones a day. So let's re-cork the champagne until we hit the 100 million mark. [TechDirt] [lien] [EN]

Best Buy Sells the iPhone; Sales Projections Raised

Seth Gilbert submits: Apple (AAPL) and retailer Best Buy (BBY) got cozy with a “store within a store” pilot project a couple years ago.  After a successful test, the pilot became a full-fledged roll out.  Last week,  Best Buy finished another project: a long effort to upgrade its cell phone sales department. (Best Buy Mobile shops are a a joint venture with Britain’s Carphone Warehouse). Putting the Apple and Phone upgrades together, Best Buy selling the iPhone would seem a natural fit.  That’s exactly what was announced Wednesday. The companies announced the iPhone will go on sale at 970 full sized Best Buy Stores and 16 satellite Best Buy Mobile outlets.Complete Story » [lien] [EN]

Best Buy agrees to sell iPhone [Apple]

Electronics retailer Best Buy will begin selling Apple's iPhone 3G next month. Until now, only Apple Stores and AT&T outlets carried the phone. Like Apple Store customers, Best Buy shoppers must sign a two-year AT&T contract to leave the store with an iPhone. [WSJ] [lien] [EN]

Report: Best Buy won't profit selling iPhones [Apple]

Best Buy will begin selling Apple iPhones this September, but it won't make much or any money at all doing so, according to retail analyst Colin McGranahan, who writes in a not the chain won't markup the phone more than $50 if at all. So why's Best Buy doing it? One, to sell higher-margin accessories like iPhone cases and speakers. Two, iPhone buyers are the kind of customers Best Buy wants to see more of in its stores — wealthy, and happily swayed by good marketing into buying the lastest shiny new objects. [lien] [EN]

Apple selling unlocked iPhones -- in Hong Kong [Apple Users Held Hostage]

I waited until today to post this, in hopes someone would explain why Apple now sells unlocked 3G iPhones in Hong Kong. Previously, the phones were locked into a two-year contract with Hutchison. The AP reports that unlocked iPhones were "widely available on the black market," but that's also true on eBay. Anyone? Gruber? How not to sell an iPhone app [Silicon Valley Users Guide]

The founders of Tap Tap Tap, a developer of iPhone applications, have parted ways, and are putting their most successful app, Where To, up for sale. John Casasanta says he and Sophia Teuschler delayed the announcement for weeks because they had difficulty coming to terms for the split. Commentards are already lauding the pair's transparency, but the move doesn't speak well for their business sense. If you were selling a home, would you tell people at an open house that the sellers were divorcing? Just what a buyer wants: a negotiation with two parties who can't agree on anything themselves. JD Power Ranks the iPhone Highest in Business Wireless Smartphone Satisfaction [IPhone]

JD Power and Associates have awarded the iPhone the top spot in their annual survey measuring overall customer satisfaction among business wireless smartphone users. On a scale of 1000 (measured by five key factors in order of importance: ease of operation, operating system, physical design, handset features, and battery aspects) Apple's iPhone scored a 778, followed by BlackBerry-maker RIM with a 703 and Samsung with a 701. This is significant for two reasons: JD Power has a reputation for reliable research and the survey focuses on business users—an area traditionally dominated by last year's winner the BlackBerry. "one-fourth of users report experiencing at least one software-related issue or problem with their current smartphone device. The software-related issues reported most often include the need to reboot the phone. [lien] [EN]

'iPhone' is 2007's Fastest-Rising Global Search Term, According To Google

It's undisputable that 2007 has been the year of the iPhone and here's some news to confirm it: Google's Zeitgeist site placed the Jesus phone's official name as the fastest rising search term around the globe. However, it failed to reach the top of Google News' most popular terms list, coming in at the sixth slot, right after '2007 cricket world cup,' 'Chris Benoit,' and 'Britney Spears.' 'American Idol,' rather unbelievably, was the top searched term on Google News. For a few years, Google has been releasing a list of the top searches all over the world and compiling them to its Zeitgeist page at year's end, often leading to collective head scratching over the true nature of the culture's mind-state. 'Britney,' really? What other terms did you think would show up on this list? We personally thought 'Obama' and 'Green. [lien] [EN]

AT&T Sells Out of Refurbished iPhones

Just as quickly as the refurbished 8 GB iPhone appeared on AT&T’s site, it was gone. It looks like there was a hoard of people teetering on the fence over whether or not to make the leap to iPhonesville and the $150 discount was more than enough incentive. There is no word on exactly how many refurbished units AT&T made available but however many it was, it didn’t take long to unload them. Just about two days in fact. There are also reports that many stores are out as well but from what we can tell, the bulk of the bounty was offered online. Considering there was a limit of one purchase per customer, that adds up to a whole lot of people with shiny [almost] new iPhones. Non-US residents may benefit most from the fire sale as there are already plenty of refurbs available on eBay. [lien] [EN]

Can Apple Sell 45m iPhones By End of 2009?

Larry Dignan (ZDNet) submits: While most Wall Street types have come down from their aggressive targets for iPhone units, one analyst, Gene Munster at Piper Jaffray, is sticking to his guns. Munster is predicting that Apple (AAPL) will ship 45 million iPhone units in calendar 2009.Complete Story » [lien] [EN]

Apple Not Selling iPhones in Canadian Apple Stores on Launch Day [Apple]

Apple's apparently so fed up with the high pricing that Rogers is shoving into Canadian iPhone owners' faces that there will be no iPhone 3Gs sold at Apple Stores in Canada this Friday. This follows up Apple's previous action of diverting stock from Canada to Europe, and really sets the tone that they're unhappy with Rogers' $60 for 150 minutes, 75 SMS messages and 400MB data plan. So what's the deal? Canadians who still want one will have to line up early to get one of the 10-20 units per store that Rogers is getting. If we were you, we'd stay home and wait for Rogers to admit defeat, stop slapping its customers in the face and lower its prices. [Apple Insider] [lien] [EN]

Somehow, Original iPhones Going For Up To $600, Sell Now! [IPhone]

Many people have been waiting for the eve of the iPhone 3G's introduction to pounce on cheap first generation iPhones on eBay and Craigslist. These people are upset. For some reason, contrary to what you'd think, first generation iPhones are going for astronomical prices. Craigslist is full of people offering up to $600 for 16GB iPhones and up to $400 for 8GB models. The arrival of the app store might be part of it, and the fact that it'll be harder to get a 3G iPhone without contract, but $600 for a 16GB iPhone is crazy. Who wants to buy my iPod touch? Apple Sells One Million iPhones in Three Days

Larry Dignan (ZDNet) submits: Apple (AAPL) said that it has sold 1 million iPhones over Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Given the activation hurdles, Apple’s tally (statement) is stunning and well ahead of what Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster–one of the more bullish Apple followers out there–predicted. Munster estimated that Apple would hit the 1 million mark later this month.Complete Story » [lien] [EN]
