Some I/O improvements in Windows Server 2008

I already posted this on my previous blog but the question comes up so often I decided to do a repost. Windows Server 2008 offers a lot of new features that are very visible like Internet Information Server 7.0, a whole new virtualization model, Server Manager and many many more.  But being a SQL Server person I am interested in other things that have been improved.  These not so visible features are mostly I/O related since databases are a synonym for I/O.  Also note that many (if not all) of these changes also apply to Windows Vista. I/O Completion Port improvement Before Windows Server 2008 a thread that issued an async I/O also executed the I/O completion task causing a context switch which is expensive.  The I/O completion is now deferred until the thread pulls the I/O off the completion port preventing this context switch. Installing Windows Server 2008 on the Hyper-V Beta

Installing Windows Server 2008 on the Hyper-V Beta So once you have the Hyper-V Beta installed and up and running you will probably want to start making virtual machines and playing with them.  Of all the possible guest operating systems - Windows Server 2008 is the 'premier' one, in both performance and ease of installation. To install Windows Server 2008 on the Hyper-V Beta you will need to: · Open the Hyper-V Management MMC UI (either from the start menu - under Administrative Tools, or through the Server Manager UI), click on 'New' from the Action pane (on the right) and select 'Virtual Machine...' · This will start the new virtual machine wizard.  After going past the introduction page you need to specify the virtual machine name. Windows Server 2008 and SharePoint Resources

With the upcoming launch of Windows Server 2008 you'll start to see more resources related to SharePoint deployments on Windows Server 2008. First to note is since RC0 of WS08, you need to have WSS service pack 1, and as applicable MOSS SP1. To run Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 for a fresh installation after installing Windows Server 2008, install Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 with SP1. You'll find a couple of references on TechNet related to deployment on Windows Server 2008 updated since RC0. WSS 3.0 · Deploy a simple farm on the Windows Server 2008 operating system (Windows SharePoint Services) · Install a stand-alone server on Windows Server 2008 (Windows SharePoint Services) MOSS 2007 We're working on releasing a similar "slipstream" version of SharePoint Server SP1 which will include both the full version of WSS the WSS SP1 patch. To transform Windows Server 2008 in a Workstation (to directly develop on MOSS 2007)

Hello, Few days ago I changed my professional notebook/laptop for a real “working” machine. Working on advanced MOSS 2007 projects, setting up directly MOSS on my host OS is nice, so did I. Windows Server 2008 Standard RC1 EN, bytes from MSDN, looks like the best candidate for this. Once setup (it’s Vista “like” setup screens), the OS runs smoothly, and working pleasure is here. But, Windows Server 2008 is hardened compared to Windows Server 2003 R2 on security. Everything is here, but you need to dig in the OS to have them: ·        Having Windows Media Player or Photo Gallery: To have them available you’ll use the great new feature of Windows Server 2008: SERVER MANAGER   From here.
