I have often argued that many political disagreements that seem like differences in fundamental values are really disagreements over the right means to achieve common endss. That is certainly true of many of the issues that divide libertarians from liberals on the one hand and social conservatives on the other. However, there are some exceptions to this generalization. Cato Unbound's recent debate over the desirability of radical life extension technology (which could potentially extend human lifespans for decades or centuri... lire la suite

One of the key arguments against proposals to extend the life of the space shuttle beyond 2010 is that it only solves part of the problem with access to the ISS. The shuttle can ferry crews to and from the station, but it cannot remain on station for extended periods to serve the “lifeboat” [.

There has been previous work on categorizing and classifying extinction events.

There is a strong overlap between those concerned about extinction risk prevention and healthy life extension. Accordingly, many supporters of the Lifeboat Foundation will be attending an open event on regenerative medicine taking place on the UCLA campus on the 27th of June. Here is the blurb:

Updated Besides the post-debate “Spin Room,” where campaign aides and surrogates gather to assess the candidates' performances, there is perhaps no category of spin of more dubious origin than pre-debate expectations setting. And we're hearing some of it today. The Obama campaign distributed a memo this afternoon titled “Home-field advantage:
Here is the draft version of the 2008 Republican Platform that the platform committee will be working with for the next few days. I'm here in Minneapolis at the convention center, and I'll be posting updates on the proceedings. The first of these, previewing the platform debates to come, is already up on the home page.

University of Wisconsin-Madison researchers have found that sirtuins, a family of enzymes linked to a longer life span and healthier aging in humans, may orchestrate the activity of other enzymes involved in metabolic processes in the body. Published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the study is the first to show that sirtuins directly control specific metabolic enzymes - called AceCSs - in mammalian cells.
NYT's Joe Nocera—one of the reporters who speculated on the health of Apple's CEO after WWDC—got a call from Steve Jobs himself. It wasn't pretty from the very beginning: This is Steve Jobs. You think I'm an arrogant [expletive] who thinks he's above the law, and I think you're a slime bucket who gets most of his facts wrong.
People who truly respect the sanctity of life, like myself, are looking at a dearth of options in 2008. While McCain is likely to support the conservative stance on abortion (to a point) to retain his conservative base, Obama is clearly going to go for the unfettered killing of young humans.
AFP - John McCain clashed with Democratic front-runner Barack Obama in a last-chance presidential debate Wednesday, hoping to launch a dramatic comeback just 19 days from election day.
In recent years, scientists have discovered that a family of enzymes called sirtuins can dramatically extend life in organisms as diverse as yeast, worms, and flies. They may also be able to control age-associated metabolic disorders, including obesity and type II diabetes. Naturally occurring substances have been shown to activate sirtuins, including a constituent of red wine called resveratrol – although an individual would need to drink about two cases of wine a day to derive a clinically effective dose of resveratrol.
