That process will take some time, but the Board will ultimately pursue the option that it believes can best maximize value for our shareholders. Q2. How long will the Board’s review process take? A review process like this is fluid, and it can take quite a bit of time. Q3. Will the Board seek proposals from any other companies? Angry investors: Yahoo turned down Microsoft offer of $40 a share in 2007 [Yahoo Raid]
A judge has unsealed documents in a shareholder lawsuit against Yahoo, the Wall Street Journal reports, and the allegations, now posted online, are explosive. Chiefly, that Microsoft offered to buy Yahoo at $40 a share in January 2007. Then-CEO Terry Semel turned Microsoft down, seeking to strike a commercial partnership instead. Slow progress in negotiating that deal made Microsoft executives impatient, leading to its unsolicited bid at $31 a share. While the plaintiffs, two Michigan pension funds, are presenting that history, it actually explains much about Yahoo's resistance to Microsoft's recent advances. Having turned down Microsoft at $40 a share, why would Yahoo then accept a bid at a price 23 percent lower than that? One has to weigh cofounders Jerry Yang and David Filo's resistance to Microsoft's overtures in light of that earlier offer. [lien] [EN]
Microsoft offering Silver members one month of Xbox Live Gold for $1
Microsoft offering Silver members one month of Xbox Live Gold for $1 by Randy Nelson { Jun 7th 9 at 5PM } [Xbox] No, Xbox Live Silver members, that's not a massive typo you're seeing on the dashboard's Spotlight channel. Microsoft really is offering one month of Gold membership for $1 to US users. Of course, it's a "limited-time offer" - and when that month's up, you'll be automatically charged for the next 1 months of membership (which you can opt out of). The last time MS offered a deal on Gold membership was back in March, where Silver users were offered one year of the good stuff for $, $0 off the regular price. [Thanks, Sam!] [lien] [EN]
Microsoft Offering 20GB HDDs Refurb For NXE Upgrade [Nxe]
It emerged last week that Microsoft's NXE upgrade would require 128MB of free space and might therefore be out of reach to some Arcade owners. Microsoft promised that some kind of 'storage solution' was in the works and has just released details of an upgrade program to ensure under-specced consoles can receive the dashboard replacement. www.xboxstorageupgrade.com recommends either clearing some space by removing saved content or entering your Serial Number and Console Id to see if you are eligible for either a free 512 MB memory card or a 20 GB hard-drive for $19.99. We have had unconfirmed rumors that the hard drives are refurbs. Microsoft has been contacted for comment. Enjoy the New Xbox Experience and Xbox LIVE![Xbox Storage Upgrade - thanks to Magnum1024k for the tip] Read More. [lien] [EN]

Microsoft Offers To Buy Yahoo
Larry Dignan (ZDNet) submits: Microsoft said Friday that it is making an unsolicited offer of $31 a share, or $44.6 billion, to buy Yahoo in a move that would give the software giant more market share and become a significant threat to Google. In a statement, Microsoft said it would allow Yahoo shareholders to get cash or shares of Microsoft. At a 62 percent premium to Yahoo’s closing price of $19.18 the deal would seem like a no brainer for suffering Yahoo shareholders. The deal, which has been rumored off and on for years, makes two things clear: Yahoo’s assets are promising despite naysayers and Microsoft is damn serious about being a search player. A long-awaited Microsoft-Yahoo made sense a year ago and doubly makes sense now. Meanwhile. [lien] [EN]

Microsoft and Samba finally come to terms over Windows protocols
After years of public disagreement over ensuring interoperability between their respective software, Microsoft and Samba have come to terms. And not surprisingly, each vendor is offering quite a different spin on the licensing agreement they unveiled on December 20. It took an intermediary, the Protocol Freedom Information Foundation (PFIF) — a non-profit organization created by the Software Freedom Law Center — to hand off the Microsoft protocol documentation that Samba said it needed to make its Unix/Linux file/print sharing products work properly with Windows. According to a press release issued December 20, Samba is paying Microsoft a one-time sum of 10,000 Euros, after which the PFIF will make available to the Samba Team, under non-disclosure, “the documentation needed for implementation of all of the workgroup server protocols covered by the European Union decision. Internal Microsoft IE 8 build passes the Acid standards test
A week after Opera Software filed an antitrust suit against Microsoft that focused, in part, on Microsoft’s falure to make Internet Explorer (IE) standards-compliant, Microsoft has gone on record stating IE 8 will include support for key Web standards. Microsoft verified last week that an internal test build of IE 8 passed the Acid2 Browser Test, according to Dean Hachamovitch, General Manager of IE Development. Hachamovitch noted the milestone in a blog post to the IE Team blog on December 19. Microsoft also posted a video to its Channel 9 Web site explaining the finer points for developers interested in the Acid2 details. Acid2 is a test page, maintained by the independent Web Standards Project group, that was written to help browser vendors ensure support for Web standards in their products. [lien] [EN]

UPDATE: Microsoft Offers Full Refund To Overcharged XBOX Live Member [Xbox Live]
XBOX Live member ForceTrainer writes in with an update about his issue with Microsoft. In our last episode, ForceTrainer has been charged $50 for 2 months of a XBOX Live gold membership-- the price of a year of service. ForceTrainer says: First off, many thanks for posting my experience with XBOX Live billing on your site. About 6 hours after the post went up I received a phone call from XBOX Live support asking about the situation. Unfortunately I did not speak with support list night, and after calling them back today I got in touch with one of their reps. I spoke with James in their escalated support for about 20 minutes. Right off the bat he explained to me what MS would be able to do, and I was offered the option of a full refund of the amount that I paid or they would provide me with a 12. [lien] [EN]
More Microsoft predictions from around the Web
Earlier this week, I weighed in with my 10 Microsoft predictions for 2008. A few other Microsoft watchers have done the same. Among some of the other interesting prognostications out there: Steven Bink: Don’t forget about the Windows Server 2008-based bundles that are coming in the new year. Bink mentions Cougar (Windows Small Business Serer 2008); Centro (Windows Essential Business Server 2008; Windows Storage Server 2008; and Windows Unified Data Storage Server 2008. WindowsConnected: Betas of Windows Server 2008 SP1 and Windows Vista SP2, predicts WindowsConnected’s Josh Phillips. (Me? I’ll be surprised if there are even private betas of either of these next year, especially given the pace at which Microsoft is developing/testing/rolling out Vista SP1 and XP SP3. [lien] [EN]
