One for the Road Looks Ahead: Ten Travel Books on Tap for 2008 by Kelly Amabile Dec 31st 2007 @ 3:30PM As the year draws to a close, instead of compiling a list of favorite books from 2007, I've decided to focus this last post on what's to come. Looking forward, there are some interesting travel titles set for release during 2008. Maybe you'll find something among these to add to your "must-read" list for the new year: For Louisiana lovers: Poor Man's Provence: Finding Myself in Cajun Louisiana by Rheta Grimsley Johnso... lire la suite

I'm going to be in New York City next week and I'm trying to really take a couple of days up and recharge my batteries for what is going to certainly be an epic 2008. I've found that in the past I would a bunch during the break and it felt like I was doing the right thing, but frankly life is too short and you need to take some time for yourself/your family (yes, I'm getting old).

A little over one year ago I purchased my first bread baking book ever: The Bread Baker’s Apprentice, by Peter Reinhart. Up to that point challah was the only yeasted bread I’d ever made, and as I flipped through Reinhart’s collection of gorgeous recipes I remember feeling a mixture of anticipation and trepidation.
Hello friends! I sort of dropped off the face of the blogosphere back in April but want to let you know that I’lll be back by Friday, June 27th. They’ll be more recipes, photos and opportunities to win books (and other things? than ever! Thank you to everyone who has emailed me with concerns about my absence.
Lately I’ve been receiving a lot of requests for quick & easy weeknight dinner ideas: I loved the tofu scramble and sweet potato post,” wrote one reader named Nikki, “but even though the recipes were easy, I don’t want to wait for a potato to bake! Do you have anything faster?
A few times a month my husband goes paintballing, and though we have a number of things in common - a love of SciFi, an interest in cooking, among other things - paintballing is not one of them. He tried to get me into it, offering to buy me my very own Tippmann A5 paintball marker and a camouflage outfit.
I’m something of an addict when it comes to food magazines, especially around this time of year when all the holiday themed recipes begin making an appearance. The November issue of Bon Appétit proved particularly irresistible this past Saturday afternoon, when it arrived in my mailbox filled with tempting visions of pumpkin brulee, pumpkin butterscotch pie and pumpkin trifle.
Every now and then, as I’m rushing through the New York City subways, a song titled “Wear Sunscreen” shuffles onto my iPod. It’s based on an essay titled “Advice, like youth, probably just wasted on the young,” which was written by Mary Schmich and published in the Chicago Tribune as a column in 1997.
I may have mentioned this before, but I have to say it again: I love the holiday season. From mid-November to New Years Eve I’m all about holiday movies and baking - the latter of which is a particular joy because this is one of the few times of year I can bake gobs of goodies, then give them to people without getting funny looks.
Tomorrow morning I’m heading off to Pennsylvania for a business trip, and since I’ll be on the train for a few hours I decided to bake a traveler’s treat for myself: butternut squash muffins with golden raisins and currants. Spiced with cinnamon, ground cloves and freshly grated nutmeg, one of these aromatic goodies will be just the thing to nibble on as the cities whiz by my window.
