Some offers are rather good while others are worthless, but membership into the Diamond program has been free since its launch, so we've never complained. That is until now. Starting in March, Microsoft's program partner Passport Unlimited will be taking complete control over the Diamond program and will begin charging an annual fee. $6.95 a year to be exact. Registration is closed until the transfer is complete and current members will keep their membership free of charge until their 2008 expiration date when Passport Unlimited will require payment to renew. Honestly, the program isn't super useful and we don't see many people forking over $7 to keep access to a free Taco Johns softshell taco coupon. Then again, those tacos are mighty tasty.
Remember those shiny free Xbox Live Diamond cards that promised to open you up to a whole new world of amazing discounts at shops and restaurants all over the world? Yeah, I've never touched mine...

Nous vous rappelons que ce lundi 21 avril 2008, le Xbox Live sera indisponible de 11h a 19h. Cette interruption du service n’entrainera aucune mise a jour de la console, elle n’est effectuee que dans un but de maintenance.

Filed under: News, Xbox Live Update: According to some of our readers not all copies of Grand Theft Auto IV include the one-month free trial card. This does not seem to be based on which version you purchase (regular or special edition) or which region you live in. We're awaiting a comment from Microsoft. Aside from securing exclusive downloadable content for Grand Theft Auto IV and being the primary promoter of the game in ongoing advertisements is there anything else Microsoft can do to make GTA IV standout? How about give away a month of Xbox Live service to everyone who purchases the game? According to THEBBPS, and verified when we all cracked open our retail copies, GTA IV includes a one-month free trail for Xbox Live Gold service which allows players to take their experience online. Ordinarily Microsoft packages 48-hour trial cards with select titles to entice gamers to go online but with the popularity of GTA IV and the potential increase of membership activations this looks like a smart strategic move on their part. Maybe this is what they meant by future growth of the service the last time they did system maintenance?
After being announced at GDC 08 the only questioned that lingered about Microsoft's new Community Games initiative was when the program would officially begin. Today Microsoft inched the program closer to launch by announcing the Beta test for Community Games is available to premium XNA membership owners and the new XNA Creators Club Online community site. The beta allows creators to submit games for review to the newly formed creators site and once reviewed and approved the game is made available on Xbox Live. According to Microsoft during GDC, Community Games will land on all Xbox Live connected consoles this holiday season and hopefully the early beta means we can have a healthy catalog of titles to choose from.
Gamefly currently has a promotion running where they're offering all Xbox Live subscribers their first month of rentals for only $5.95 PLUS they're throwing in 400 Microsoft points for free. That's of course for one rental at a time, but you can up your rentals to two for $9.95 (again, only the first month) and still get the free MS points. Note that this offer is only good for new Gamefly accounts and the monthly fee will get jacked back up to a minimum of $15.95 a month. But, like we said, it's a good introductory offer if you were thinking about doing the whole Gamefly thing anyway.
