Growing up, I’ve always wanted a lightsaber and one day, my parents bought one for me and my brother and I was disappointed that it was such a horrible, cheap plastic piece of crap! But this one promises to be different: Star Wars DIY Force FX Lightsaber Kit. All the parts are based on actual screen-seen [.
For those of us that saw footage of the drunken Darth Vader attack and found ourselves slightly disappointed by the. well. un-Star Wars-like nature of the Sith Lord's weapon, Instructables has a DIY kit to ensure that our next drunken rampage is truly worthy of the Dark Side. The project, from Instructables user Ricardoaraujo, uses a normal toy lightsaber hilt, some AA batteries, a rubber hose and a couple of LEDs to build a weapon you'd be proud to kick Jedi ass with.

Henrique sent me a link to this cool DIY light that he built from traffic cones. I asked him to post some shots of the build process so our readers could easily make one, and he did! Thanks Henrique, it looks like a really cool light that is really easy to build. I just finished the drawings of the DIYstrict Light for Letsevo.
Joe of HacknMod writes: Here's an awesome DIY lighting system for you. This guy set up a wicked system that can be controlled by the colors displayed on his TV (similar to Phillip's Ambilight) or by controlling it with his BlackBerry. He used an LED-Wiz controller to control various RBG LED displays thorough the room.
I've just installed a set of color-change lighting strips in my new apartment, but now I kinda wish I'd spotted these new lamps from original lava-lamp makers Mathmos first. The Poplights are cuteness exemplified: just six inches high, and in hand-blown glass. They've got a set of LEDs inside the central "bulb" and change between blue, purple, violet, magenta, red lighting, and you turn them on my simply pushing down on top, which I guess must be the "pop" part.

This is a really nice DIY softbox that anyone can build. Using a softbox can really improve the overall quality of your photographs. The website has a lot more information and photographs of the entire build. The purpose of this project is twofold. First it allows for the testing of a new idea for mounting a DIY softbox to a light stand and secondly it lets me answer a question in the comments on my previous Large DIY Softbox about the best type of lining material to use when 'doing it yourself'.

Photophool has a great CCRRFD-RNX Magnum DIY macro lighting solution using a cup. Thanks Steve! After quite a bit of real world usage, I've concluded that most users of the Raynox DCR-250 aux close-up lens will be well served by this simplified version of my styrofoam cup ringflash emulator.
DIY gadgeteer Carlos at Carlito's Contraptions and Tony Stark have at least one thing in common: they like to tinker with homemade gizmos and strap 'em onto their bodies. Sadly Carlos didn't have access to Tony's array of sci-fi gadget impossibilities, but that didn't stop him from producing this palm-mounted ultra-bright LED flashlight in a sturdy aluminum frame that's activated with a cocked wrist.
Who knew you could make a lamp from a few, I mean a ton, of drinking straws? This would be a great light for a toy room, just make sure to use a CFL light so it doesn't melt! Learn how to make your own Drinking Straw Light Read more | Permalink | Comments | Read more articles in DIY Projects |
This is a really nice UV light box for making PCBs. It supports double sided boards, has a built in timer, and a safety switch to turn off the unit when opened. Looks like a great alternative to expensive commercial versions. I'm just toying around with this idea at the moment. If I start using photo exposure PCB type production, I'm probably going to need a light box.
Bill James, the godfather of sabermetrics, had one of the longest Q&As I've ever seen with the NYTimes' Freakonomics blog. He answered a ton of reader questions; if you know nothing else about the man, read this. Q: Based on your statistical analysis, how do you feel about the Yankees' young prospects, namely Chamberlain, Kennedy, and Hughes, making a huge (positive) difference for the Yankee pitching staff?
Past generations decked out their bike spokes with playing cards, this generation is doing it with LEDs. One of the best examples so far comes from a Flickr user that utilized six SpokePOV kits to turn his bicycle wheel into a stunning, illuminated Obama logo.
