Out of all the Google services, iGoogle saw the largest growth this year with a 267% increase according to comScore data. iGoogle is a personalized homepage where users can install “Gadgets” — anything from egg timers to interesting news feeds. iGoogle was launched May 20, 2005, and so the comparison between 2006 and 2007 is the first year over year comparison available. These impressive numbers may cause some companies with competing products, like NetVibes, to shake a bit in their boots. Other Google products that saw increased usage this year include: · Google Web Search (+20%) · Google Images (+35%) · Google News (+20%) · Google Book Search (+55%) · Google Blog Search (+27%) · Google Maps (+52%) · Google Earth (+11%) · Google Groups (+20%) Where there is success, there is also failure though. Google has a history of cutting fat — so my predictions for 2008 will include the following “losers” being discontinued, or at least completely re-thought. · Google Video Search (-12%) · Google Scholar (-32%) · Google Directory Search (-19%) · Google Products (-73%) Then there is Google Finance, this service hasn’t had any usage swings in either direction. The product just isn’t as powerful as the competition, and investors don’t feel the need to change yet. Google is going to have to think hard about what investors will actually find useful enough to make them “need” Google Fianance — without that, the service will continue to coast along at best.

Several people have noticed a new version of Google Talk (1.0.0.105) in the wild that is available to download from here. We’ve been waiting since January for a new version, and it’s unfortunate to see that when we finally get one, it removes several features that I thought were really great — including voicemail. In previous versions of Google Talk, if someone tried to call and you didn’t pick up, the caller would be asked to record a mesage. That recording would then appear in the recipients Gmail as a voicemail message. I guess it would be fair to ask, how many people actually used the voicemail feature? I liked it, but I’ve personally never received a real message, or left one — maybe this is the rationale behind its removal? Besides voicemail, it appears Google has also removed Orkut integration, and the “show what I’m listening to” feature. It would be nice to see a new version of the Google Talk client which includes great new features — it’s been far too long since we’ve see anything new in this application. This version does have some minor updates though — David Hetfield from the Google Blogoscoped forums noticed the following:

I hear a lot of pitches, and look at a lot of websites of vendors (in fact, I maintain massive lists tracking of the industry) and know what a good pitch is and what a bad one is. I also have had to lead social media within my previous company, the conservative Hitachi Data Systems. It was a good learning experience, then at PodTech (on the vendor side) I helped sales teams understand social media, and was on client calls and visits. We need Web 2.0 tools like Ajaz, Blogs _____ (insert technology) to add to our website so we can socialize and aggregate. They are very popular right now.
For over a month, my blog was not being indexed by Google. I recently upgraded to a dedicated server, and apparently something wasn’t toggled correctly, and some websites found my blog to be a 403, permission issues. Although I was being indexed by Yahoo, MSN, ASK and others, google was no longer displaying my blog in any search results. I’ve never spent money on Search Engine Optimization (SEO) nor do I go to any great efforts other than blogging best practices, to make sure I score well. I’ve been using Google as the main way to find my own blog posts, as it’s the fastest way, the native blog search returns way to many values, and not necessarily sorted by relevance. I wasn’t the only one, as a few readers emailed me and told me they couldn’t find my blog, apparently they use search to find me, rather than bookmark or subscribe. Thanks to the various folks that have tried to offer some advice, although I ultimately found the solution by logging into Google’s webmaster and doing a site verify (have you done that?). I then contacted my host, and a few days later, it’s now easily found in the search results. Here’s what my web host said: “Ah!, i found that you have any ip starting from 66.249 blocked, im not sure why this is here, probably to block google when you site was hosted on shared. I dont have any notes on your account that we did this for any issues on your private server, so i`ll go ahead and remove it.”
Google GDrive is not a rumor Again, we saw a couple features while digging around through the Google translation tool, however these features have yet to surface. Google Gears integration, and security features that let you view account activity. These two features will make a huge splash when they are finally released. New pictures of the Google Phone It turns out that this was a hoax — there is no “Google Phone”, but there is a Google Phone operating system called Android that was launched later in the year. Google Earth in 4D Google launched historic maps for Google Earth that lets you scroll back in time. There are still no true 3D buildings in Google Earth though, other than the ones people have built with Google SketchUp. I am hoping we will see real buildings before next year. Google scared us by stopping their quota counter. Thankfully it began counting again shortly after it stopped. Google launches Google Reader for the Wii The Google Reader team is all about making their feed reader work on many different types of devices. Most recently, they launched the service with an iPhone interface for people on the go. After posting what I thought was an innocent “here’s a list of your contacts” Gmail hack, because it was a simple XML which could not be consumed by a remote web app, Haochi figured out how to make it return an extremely easy-to-consume JSON object. Needless to say, it was fixed really quick. Google kicks Microsoft where it hurts, again Google started giving away Star Office for free through the Google Updater. The application is a direct competitor to the Microsoft Office suite — and it’s not too shabby either. Google Calendar task list feature Google has been working on the long awaited “Task List” feature for Google Calendar. They have told us that it is on their own task list, and we can expect to see it in a future release.
