Cupcake recipes from The Journal Gazette
Fort Wayne, Indiana's The Journal Gazette offers up several cupcake recipes, including basic cupcakes, brownie cupcakes, dried fruit cupcakes, and lemon meringue pie cucpakes, in an article on our favorite dessert: Cupcakes have been around since at least the 18th century, although they were called “queen” cakes way back then. Often, they were baked in decorative molds, but some simple recipes called for baking them in earthenware cups. Hence, the probable origin of the name. By the 19th century, cupcake recipes were included in all kinds of cookbooks. Some food historians say that, much like the pound cake recipe that included a pound of this and a pound of that, cupcake recipes used a similar cup of this and a cup of that strategy. [lien] [EN]
Cupcake recipe roundup
A few cupcake recipes we've noticed: Recipe for Auntie Em's Kichen's coconut cupcakes in the Los Angeles Times (see also Auntie Em's Kitchen) This billowy coconut cupcake is pretty irresistible. The cake has a hint of almond and a light buttermilk tang. There's tender, shredded coconut baked into the cake too. And the frosting -- it's a cream cheese frosting with butter mixed in, airy and creamy both, finished with a sprinkling of more shredded coconut on top. photo by Carlos Chavez for the Los Angeles Times Cookies 'n' cream cupcake recipe from Vegan Cupcakes Take Over The World via Killeen Daily Herald - see also Vegan Cupcakes Pequin chili chocolate cupcakes from Chockylit Creme Brulee cupcakes from How to Eat a Cupcake Orange cupcakes from Thinking About Food French Bakery vanilla cupcakes [lien] [EN]

We won! We won! Plus Hello, Cupcake event video
We are so thrilled that Hello, Cupcake! authors Karen Tack and Alan Richardson have seen fit to award us the first Hello, Cupcake award. Click through for the recipe. Finally, an award that you really can share with all the people that helped along the way! For the Hello, Cupcake! Award we used chocolate melting wafers like glue to attach a pretzel, a malted milk ball, and a cookie to a vanilla creme wafer and then stuck them in a mini doughnut to make a trophy statue. You can change the shapes by using different snacks and make an award to match any event; a sports trophy, a teacher's award, or best mom and dad. We customized the ones shown above to honor our friends at Cupcakes take the cake. You can also check out this great video from YouTube by the ladies of GoodyBlog. [lien] [EN]

Hello Cupcake mania hits DC; bloggers report
Hello Cupcake photo via Danielle Buckley In no particular order, some reports from opening day at Washington, DC's newest cupcakery Hello Cupcake: Blogger Panache Nosh shares photos and her take on the decor and taste: And last but not least...Prima Donna. Strawberry buttercream frosting on a chocolate cupcake. This is not buttercream like you're used to at Cakelove...its overly creamy (think the consistency of toothpaste but strawberry flavor). The cupcake was nice and moist though. In summary, (and to be fair, I need to go back to try other varieties - especially the vanilla on chocolate) Frank Bruni remains correct. I can't say that what I tasted today was amazing but I'll be back in a couple more weeks when they've worked out all the kinks and have enough time to think. [lien] [EN]

Clayton for DCist The menu rotates daily but always includes a seasonal offering, as well as vegan and gluten-free versions of most regular flavors (dog-friendly options, Pup Cakes, are also on the way). Penny’s first finalized recipe, the Peanut Butter Blossom with a Scharffen Berger chocolate base topped with peanut butter frosting and a chocolate kiss, has also proven to be the most popular in pre-opening test runs. We have our eyes set on some of the more offbeat flavors, including Chocolate Chai, a chocolate base with chai buttercream, Maya Favorite Cupcake, a cinnamon-chocolate cake topped with chili-infused chocolate ganache and hot pepper “sprinkles. Hello Cupcake opens August 25th in Washington, DC
Washington, DC's Hello Cupcake (no relation to Tulsa's or Tacoma's) will open Monday, August 25th at 1351 Connecticut Avenue, NW. Design Cult got a sneak peek: With the opening of Hello Cupcake, proprietor and head baker Penny Karas has brought together what she describes as 'two separate but interconnected ideas." First, as the bakeries motto suggest, this is 'a sophisticated twist on a an old-fashioned classic', meaning that all the ingredients are top quality, and in most cases organic and locally grown. Many of the inventive flavors are geared towards a sophisticated palette. And rather than the slathered on icing with sprinkles you grew up with, these cupcakes feature artistically piped icing with an array of carefully made confectioner toppers. But the level of sophistication and modern style does not stop at the little cakes themselves. [lien] [EN]
Hello, Cupcake's owner assesses first week in business
photo by Danielle Buckley on Hello, Cupcake's opening day Owner of just-opened Washington, DC bakery Hello, Cupcake Penny Karas addresses the four-cupcake limit and talks about opening week in The Hoya. But what's up with their headline?? "Freshly Opened Bakery Keeps Pace With Latest Cupcake Fad" Fad, trend, blah, blah. I think it's clear that cupcakes are not only not going away, they are gaining in popularity and being innovated upon. Bakeries are upping the ante and new flavors as well as new twists on the cupcakery are all on the way. There is so much yet to be seen from our favorite dessert, so please, please, please reporters - keep covering cupcakes, but find a new angle than the "fad/trend"/Magnolia Bakery/Sex and the City one.
