The top 3 hacks of the year

Happy New Year and here’s to an effective 2008.

Here are the three most effective hacks of 2007. We maintain a Cheat Sheet of all the hacks, but try to apply these three if you don’t have time to apply them all.

Create a market for your shares

You need strong alternatives to hack a term sheet. Create alternatives with focus: pitch and negotiate with all your prospective investors at once. Focus compounds scarcity and social proof, which closes deals. Focus also yields a quick yes or no from investors—either way.

18-Year-Old Says He Hacked Comcast Because He's "Tired Of Their Shitty Service" [Crime]

Here's a technique we'll not be adding to our list of fun ways to escalate your complaint: The 18-year-old who recently hacked Comcast and took down the company's homepage and webmail told Wired that it was Comcast's own fault... The hacker, known as EBK, called Comcast to let them know they'd been hacked. The manager scoffed and hung up: "If he wasn't such a prick, he could have avoided all of that," says EBK. "I wasn't even really thinking. Plus, I'm just so mad at Comcast. I'm tired of their shitty service." Comcast Hijackers Say They Warned the Company First [Wired] (Photo: cmorran123) [lien] [EN]

'Anonymous' Kid Faces Ten Years for Scientology Hack [4chan]

Who was the dark mastermind behind last January's Denial of Service attack that shut down Scientology.org for a little while? A teenager, obvs. 18-year-old Dmitriy Guzner, a self-proclaimed member of the 4Chan-related anti-Scientology group Anonymous has been busted by the Feds for his part in the shenanigans. The Verona, NJ, teen has plead guilty and could get slammed with ten years in prison. Ouch. Press release after the jump. Weekly Digest: End of Year Rush, Lorraine is Bad, Awards, and Kicking Blogging But - As Usual

I had last week’s Weekly Digest of “Lorelle World” ready to go, but life stepped in with a lot of snow and too many distractions. My apologies. So this week, you get three-for-one. I decided to have a little fun these past few weeks with the types of articles I published here and on the Blog Herald. I hope you all enjoyed the fun. It’s always risky when you take your blog off track, even for a single post. Consider some of the fun a holiday gift for bloggers. Yes, I was a bad girl this year. Don’t forget that I’m still looking for your input on blogging events for next year for the blog conference and event calendar I’m working on. If you are a part of a blogging or WordPress group that meets regularly, let me know! This is the Weekly Digest from Lorelle on WordPress. [lien] [EN]

Using the 'Twilight Hack,' man runs Tetris

Filed under: Video You remember the "Twilight Hack," right? Well, Pong isn't the only thing folks are using this to run, as one man shows us his homebrew version of Tetris running on the system. Originally created as a homebrew project for the GameCube many years ago, this version of Tetris is lacking the bells and whistles most have taken for granted over the last decade or so. Still, it's impressive to see homebrew running on the Wii. [Via QJ] Permalink|Email this|LinkingBlogs|Comments Ads by Google [lien] [EN]

Who Will Get Hacked First: Vista, OSX or Linux? Place Your Bets Here [Hacker Superbowl]

Organizers behind the CanSecWest security conference in Vancouver are putting together a "hacker superbowl" of sorts, pitting attendees' skills against Vista, Mac OS X and Linux. Dubbed PWN 2 OWN (ewwww), the objective is to develop a brand-new "zero day" attack to take control of one of the three operating systems loaded onto laptops. There's a grand prize of $20,000, and the hacked laptop will go to the first contestant to pull it off. So, the question is—which OS do you think will go down first? UPDATE: A winner has been announced! Vote and then hit the jump to see if you were correct. Gawker Media polls require Javascript; if you're viewing this in an RSS reader, click through to view in your Javascript-enabled web browser. It appears that contestant Charlie Miller just earned himself $10. [lien] [EN]

Sprint Twiddles Thumbs While 12-Year Customers Get Scammed For $2,500 [Identity Theft]

Someone hacked this couple's Sprint account, and bought four new phones on it, leaving these 12-year customers to pay over $2,500. Every time they called Sprint, the fraud department said not to worry and that the charges would be off the bill next month, but the disconnect notices kept arriving until Sprint shut off their phone. Only after a local consumer reporter got involved was the problem solved. When asked why it took so long, Sprint said, "it takes a while to complete a thorough investigation." If you're a legacy Nextel customer now with Sprint, you may want to ask about getting a PIN set up on your account. The account seemed to have been targeted (the fraud department said probably by someone inside Sprint) because it was an old Nextel account that didn't have a PIN. Sprint charges customer $2. 'LAT' Oscar Blogger Rehashes 80 Year Old Argument For Reasons No One Quite Understands [Hack Attack]

The Uwe Boll of Oscar bloggers, Tom O'Neil, is at it again over at Gold Derby, where his idle hands on the slowest of slow news days has him making all kinds of trouble for one of the undisputed classics of American silent cinema. "Undisputed," that is, until today, when O'Neil asked and (regrettably) answered the positively unessential question: What was the real Best Picture Oscar winner of 1927-28? We at Defamer didn't think we cared — but until you've seen O'Neil having his way with a masterpiece, you might be surprised what piques your interest (spoilers after the jump). I've seen [Best Production winner] Wings a few times and liked it OK. But now that I've viewed [Best Artistic Picture winner] Sunrise, I must concede: Wings soars by comparison. Sunrise is paper-thin, hilariously schmaltzy. [lien] [EN]

How Two Teenage High School Dropouts Hacked Comcast [Comcast]

A couple days ago, a pair of teenagers brought down Comcast's homepage and mail service. They haven't been arrested (yet), so they gave the full story to Wired. Like most nuclear-level hacks, they didn't intend to hijack the website and mail hosting of the biggest cable company in the country. They say they even tried to warn Comcast. But, "once we were in," said EBK, the younger of the two, "it was, like, fuck it." Here's how it went down, in a nutshell. On Tuesday, Defiant and EBK (19 and 18 years old, respectively) say they exploited a flaw to hack into Network Solutions, a domain registrar, to take control of Comcast's domain management console and 200 of its domain names. (Network Solutions denies the flaw.) To start, they relocated Comcast.net's technical contact to the Dildo Room at 69 Dick Tard Lane. [lien] [EN]

WordPress Blogs and More Hacked by Google Redirects

Hackers are just determined. There are no new security flaws reported recently in WordPress, but that hasn’t stopped imaginative and determined hackers. The recent security issues concern hackers who work with Google and other search engine results and redirects traffic from your blog or website. The searchers clicks on the link and is redirected to the hacker’s site with the same search string used to search in the search engine. Most bloggers notice a problem when their site traffic drops inexplicably and/or their ad income drops. This is not a WordPress-specific issue. Many non-WordPress blogs have been hit by this redirect technique over the years. WordPress blogs seem to be a new target, which is probably because there are so many and such a strong and vocal community to speak out against such abuse. [lien] [EN]

Arianna Huffington's 15-Year Feud With Tim Russert [Awkward]

So. As we noted this morning, blog mistress Arianna Huffington didn't weigh in on the unexpected death of departed Meet the Press host Tim Russert until well after everyone else, and once she did, she didn't have much to say. Because of the old axiom about how much one should say when one doesn't have anything nice to say. (HuffPo's regular feature "Russert Watch" has gone blank—technical glitch or archive-scrubbing?) As anyone who's read Arianna's media writing over the last couple years knows, she never liked Tim. And we only just recently wandered into the fray, when we learned that Russert's unappreciated lapdog Chris Matthews hated Huffington for her years spent bashing his idol. And why did she hate Tim? This book excerpt might explain it all! Republican strategist Ed Rollins wrote a memoir in which he discussed his role in Michael Huffington's disastrous run for the US Senate. [lien] [EN]

Happy Happiest Day of the Year Day! [Calling Bullshit]

Hey everyone it's the happiest goddamn day of the year! You probably read as much in your local paper? According to a scientist—a scientist!—June 20 is the happiest day of 2008. He uses a mathematical formula to prove it! With science! Look, here is the equation: O + (N x S) + Cpm/T + He. The scientician who developed this formula is named Cliff Arnall. If that name is familiar, it may be because you read him calling January 22 the saddest day of the year. In 2007. And 2006, and 2005. The story runs, twice a year, like clockwork, in newspapers across the US and the UK. All because a quack psychologist is more than happy to sign a check from some corporation and then attach his name to a press release. It's the happiest day of the year for newspaper editors desperate to fill a news hole on a summer Friday! [Mind Hacks] [lien] [EN]
