Facebook Connect - another step to open social networks
by Charlene Li
Facebook just announced "Facebook Connect", which they position as the natural evolution of Facebook as an open platform, which started from their initial API in 2006 and expanded with Facebook Platform in May 2007. This is how they describe Facebook Connect:
"Facebook Connect is the next iteration of Facebook Platform that allows users to "connect" their Facebook identity, friends and privacy to any site. This will now enable third party websites to implement and offer even more features of Facebook Platform off of Facebook – similar to features available to third party applications today on Facebook.lire la suite

- Can we get a first step in social networking portability?
Earlier this week, during Marc Canter’s panel at LeWeb, I asked whether we could get a first step on all the social networks toward true social graph portability (which probably won’t happen because it’s too complex to do, because there are too many privacy rules, and because companies aren’t likely to give up their lockin anytime soon — imagine being able to drag all your information along with all of that of your friends from Facebook to MySpace and you’ll seee just how hard portability is going to prove to be).

- Should Brands Join or Build Social Networks? (results from an informal survey)
Friday on Twitter I posed the question, should brands join existing social networks (like Facebook, MySpace, etc) or build their own social network (like these many white label tools)? I asked my Twitter network: “Should brands Join or Build their own Social Networks?” Here’s the tally from the many responses: · Join 10 · Build 5 · Both 10 · Mixed reactions.
- Social Networking for Patients
These days, there are social networks for everyone, from high school athletes to dog lovers. It is hard to believe that many of these niche networks will thrive — do teenage football players really need their own Web site or will general social networks like Facebook serve them just as well? Patient social networks are a new niche. Health is often sensitive and private — not something people want to discuss on Facebook with all of their friends and colleagues.

- Green Marketing on Social Networks
Participation in social networks continues to grow seemingly without bounds as more people seek to connect, share and collaborate with likeminded individuals online. Today, hundreds of millions of online users have already signed up, with an increasing number belonging to more than one network. For green marketers, social networks provide a compelling channel to communicate with consumers that have an affinity for green or are at least open.
- Social Network Stats: Facebook, MySpace, Reunion (Jan, 2008)
Every so often as an Analyst I get numbers from some of the companies I cover (I’m mainly covering social networks now), here are some that I’ve received from Reunion, I feel it’s helpful to share this with my readers. Sources The ones from MySpace are handed to me from a member of the press, someone I have no reason not to trust, and the Facebook stats are from their own site.
- The "open" social graph on the horizon
by Charlene Li The Data Portability Workgroup (DPW) announced today that Google, Plaxo -- and the big surprise -- Facebook, will be participating in discussion on how users can "access their friends and media across all the applications, social networking sites and widgets that implement the design into their systems." This couldn't have come at a more perfect time, especially given the flap over Robert Scoble scraping Facebook (and note that he's also a part of the DPW).
- Three ways that social networks are different from other forms of online communication
Social Networks are widely accepted to be the latest evolution of online communications, tracing a line back through instant messaging, webmail, chat rooms and bulletin boards. Now that we’ve had a little more time and perspective on how they are used, we’re starting to see a few differences between how social networks are used for online communication and previous forms of online communication.
