Senator Ted Kennedy Dead at 77

Several news sources report Senator Ted Kennedy has died of brain cancer. My condolences to his family. Please note that comments will be moderated. UPDATE BY PATTERICO: Growing up, my dad hated three people more than any other: Ted Kennedy, Jane Fonda, and Andy Granatelli. (Don’t ask.) I was not a fan either. I doubt readers of my site are much different, and I don’t expect commenters here to say anything nice about the guy. Yes, he caused a woman’s death. Yes, he should have been prosecuted. Just follow the adage your mom told you: if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all. Moderators are free to delete comments as necessary. [lien] [EN]

Ted Kennedy: The Tabloids Respond [Stay Classy]

Massachusetts Senator Ted Kennedy was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. He is, more or less, dying. So we can rely on our own New York Post to relay that fact as efficiently as possible. They do, of course, call him a "brave icon," but there's really not a lot of love lost between the rabidly conservative Post and the grand old liberal Kennedy. Boston's tabloid, the Herald, goes with a show of support. The poor Daily News splits the difference. [lien] [EN]

News of Kennedy’s brain tumor causes Freeper thread to be shut down

Yes, the god-fearing denizens of the Freepi swamps were so vile after hearing the news about Ted Kennedy that the moderator posted this message upon shutting down the thread: Some of you are a disgrace to this forum, and life is too short to waste cleaning up your messes. Statements on Kennedy: Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid: “The [...] [lien] [EN]

Ted Kennedy's Health News Only to Trashy Tabs [Death]

News of the worsening condition of Senator Ted Kennedy—currently suffering from a malignant brain tumor—made the front page of The Globe, one of the trashiest of the trashy tabloids. But in the respectable press, all we hear is that a lavish celebration of Kennedy's life is being prepared for the upcoming Democratic National Convention. The reader is asked to read between the lines and figure out that Kennedy is perhaps near death. Anyone who purchases The Globe, though, is always kept well-informed as to which old famous person is closest to death's door. It's a macabre little niche that they've been allowed to dominate thanks to the squeamishness of the rest of the press in covering celebrity health. Recently, the tabloids have led the MSM in covering the illnesses of Kennedy. [lien] [EN]

Ted Kennedy 'Talkative And Joking' After Hearing Latest McCain Strategy [Unstoppable]

Senator Ted Kennedy was hospitalized this morning after having some kind of seizure, and then taken to another hospital because it was apparently pretty serious, but the 76-year-old famous liberal is now talking and joking, according to the Kennedy Clan. This is Edward Kennedy, the Keith Richards of politics, and the Kennedys. He can survive anything. This AP picture, by the way, is from May 12, a few days ago. Kennedy is laughing over something at the Profiles In Courage awards dinner at JFK's presidential library/museum in Boston. John F. Get well soon, Senator. [lien] [EN]

Ted Kennedy Has Malignant Brain Tumor [Sad Face]

Doctors have determined that Ted Kennedy, who was hospitalized after a seizure over the weekend, has a malignant brain tumor. They're going to do some more tests to determine a course of action, but average survival appears to be anywhere between less than a year to five years. Too sad. Get well soon, Teddy! We will honor you by linking to your massive, awe-inspiring legislative accomplishments section on Wikipedia, as you watch the Red Sox in the hospital. [AP/MSNBC] [lien] [EN]

Ted Kennedy Has Lived For Hundreds Of Years [Sad Face]

Well dagnabbit, this Ted Kennedy-cancer news is a whole lot of No Fun. Looks like they can't take the tumor out because it's too close to "sensitive" parts of the brain, and 14 to 15 months seems to be the average survival period. The tumor is worse — more aggressive — for old folks, too. Even old racist Robert Byrd cried on the Senate floor today. Bummer on all levels, for everyone. But we have searched YouTube for the latest Ted Kennedy tribute videos, and here's a new one that shows Teddy "through the years." The background tunage is mighty catchy. And we can say this because it's unrelated to his cancer: Ted Kennedy looked like such a preppy douchebag for most of his life. But he did shit for poor people so it all balances out. [lien] [EN]

Could Ted Kennedy's Cancer Have Been Caught? [Assignment Desk]

The Kennedy brothers have spawned so many conspiracy theories that it seems excessive to add to the directory. But there's some speculation among medical professionals about Ted Kennedy's brain cancer diagnosis, which we're going to air. In particular: why was the recent operation to remove part of the senator's tumor conducted at Duke University Medical Center in North Carolina and not in Kennedy's home state? Now Duke (in Durham, North Carolina) is ranked by US News and World Report among America's top ten cancer centers. Allan Friedman, the doctor who performed the surgery, is a "thought leader" in neuro-oncology, according to an official at the American Cancer Society. And wealthy patients facing a deadly disease do seek out the best treatment—even if that's only available out. [lien] [EN]

ESPN fires radio host who spoke favorably of seeing Sen. Ted Kennedy ‘assassinated.’

Last week, after Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-MA) was diagnosed with a brain tumor, Pittsburgh-based sports shock jock Mark Madden said on his radio show that he was “disappointed to hear” that Kennedy was ill because he had “always hoped Senator Kennedy would be live long enough to be assassinated.” After waiting five days and considering [...] [lien] [EN]

Robert Novak Diagnosed with Brain Tumor

[Guest post by DRJ] Columnist Robert Novak has been diagnosed with a brain tumor. I hope it’s benign, was caught early, and can be treated. This may explain his recent inability to grasp and recall the details of his car/pedestrian accident. Newsbusters points out that the Huffington Post elected to close comments on this topic, which may become the norm when the subject is a conservative with a serious disease. There probably aren’t more brain tumors statistically but I’ve noticed more cases. Ted Kennedy was recently diagnosed and I know several in my community (which may not be unusual since I’ll probably know more people with every disease as I get older). However, I also know more teens with brain tumors and that’s upsetting. [lien] [EN]

Ted Kennedy Wins Rave Reviews [Headlines]

We were told Ted Kennedy, who's battling advanced brain cancer, had mere weeks to live. We were told there'd be a macabre video salute to the man in lieu of an actual appearance in Denver. So when he actually showed up on stage at the DNC to deliver a genuinely rousing speech, well, it was an emotional moment. So emotional that the major tabloids of both New York and Boston could not come up with original headlines. The Post raves! Sen. Ted Kennedy brought the Democratic faithful to cheers and tears last night as he emerged from a summer of treatment for brain cancer to vow that he'll be in Washington when a new president is sworn in. And the Herald! Bay State Sen. Edward M. Kennedy shook off the effects of cancer treatment and stood tall on the stage of the Democratic National Convention last night. [lien] [EN]

Ted Kennedy, 1932-2009

People of a certain age remember a time of a New Frontier, of asking not what your country can do for you, and of man landing on the moon by the end of this decade. For all their flaws (they were after all men), the Brothers Kennedy did, in the 0s, inspire us to set our sights higher. The death of the youngest brother liberates them from mundane reality for their place in history. The AP story in full - BOSTON — Sen. Edward M. Kennedy was a Democrat’s Democrat, so much so that he became a rallying point for those in his party and an object of derision for Republican opponents. Yet his affability and capability to span the partisan divide on an array of legislative matters prompted an outpouring of condolences from those in the GOP as well as the Democratic Party following his death Tuesday at age 7 from brain cancer. NO DOUBTING TED KENNEDY’S IMPACT ON HISTORY

We will let the New York Times and liberal blogs lionize the man. I assure you there will be enough of that for anyone’s tastes. Here, I will try to give the unvarnished truth about a person who was indeed, the “liberal lion of the Senate” (take from that what you will), as well as representing the absolute worst of wealth and privilege in the United States. Ted Kennedy, the rogue son of a rogue family has died of brain cancer at age . Oftentimes, liberals like to compare the Kennedy family to that other famous political family that featured presidents, and legislators of note; the Adams family. Pardon me if my outrage can’t quite be held in check. The man who fought longer and harder for American independence than anyone of his time - John Adams . [lien] [EN]

Ted Kennedy Thanked Aznar for Showing Solidarity with U.S. on Iraq

Nice find by Jose Guardia in a Spanish-language article. Jose translates the critical passage for us - Shortly after the Iraq war started I saw Senator Kennedy in a public session of the U.S. Supreme Court. As we were taking our seats he briefly took my arm and told me he greatly appreciated the attitude of the Spanish government regarding the decision taken by the White House because, he said, “although you know my position ” — he was one of the few senators to oppose the authorization for the war — “I appreciate the solidarity with my country in times like this.” “I would appreciate if you relay this to President Aznar,” he added. Jose says: Let me see if I get this straight: if it’s good to show solidarity with the US “in times like this”. [lien] [EN]

The unspoken legacy of Ted Kennedy

This weekend, another member of the Kennedy clan was buried with a liberal application of liberal myth-making. Jacqueline Kennedy begged historian-journo Theodore M. White to rescue JFK’s legacy. White obliged by regurgitating her Camelot myth, knowing it to be a misreading of history. The death of Ted Kennedy unavoidably exposed a new generation to Kennedy’s many sins — including, but not limited to Chappaquiddick — which tend to get glossed over or unmentioned in public education and the establishment media. Accordingly, those who have spent decades enabling the Kennedys rolled out yet another myth: that Ted Kennedy “redeemed” himself after leaving Mary Jo Kopechne to drown (perhaps to slowly asphyxiate), failing to report it to authorities for ten hours.
