White Sox Unveil Monument, Call it an Offense

There wasn't much fight in the White Sox offense Friday night, unless you count the animated Jim Thome, who was ejected for just the third time in his career. Nick Swisher got (most of) the night off to nurse a sore hip flexor, and the rest of the Sox offense followed suit. The Sox quickly had the erratic Dontrelle Willis on the ropes before he was pulled without retiring a batter in the first, but couldn't put together anything against a Tigers bullpen which entered the game as one of the worst in baseball. They managed just 4 hits in 9 innings off a group that had allowed 38 in 32 innings entering the night. I had the pleasure of missing most of this one, so I'll leave the specifics up to you guys. White Sox in a Giving Mood

I suppose when you win 7 straight, when your playoff hopes are as high as ever, when you're facing a team you've dominated recently, you're bound to get a little cocky. That was Tuesday's loss to the Tigers. The White Sox seemed to think they could get away with giving away outs, with poor baserunning decisions, with leaving an ineffective starter in the game to give up some much needed insurance runs. They couldn't. Jose Contreras was terrible--2007-esque--and I've got pretty graphs to prove it. Contreras was a couple MPH slower with his fastball according to gameday, and while he walked only one, his control withing the strike zone was, let's say, lacking. Terror At Michelle Obama "Doing God-Knows-What In The White House" [Shouting Heads]

Michelle Obama went on The View yesterday to soften her Fox News-propagated image as a whitey-hating terrorist baby mama, but the appearance is only making the cable pundits talk about her image problems more. Exhibit A: Michelle Bernard said on MSNBC's Hardball that the makeover is needed "so people aren't terrified thinking this black woman is going to be doing God-knows-what in the White House." Bernard is the daughter of Jamaican immigrants, so it would be a stretch to lump this comment in with all the recent racial smears against the prospective first-lady, but it does beg the questions, some posed by an astute email tipster: Just what, exactly, could Michelle Obama do in the White House? White Sox-Royals discipline issued

[MLB.com] Discipline has been issued to two players and the managers of both Clubs as the result of on-field incidents in Sunday's game between the Chicago White Sox and the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium. Bob Watson, Vice President of On-Field Operations for Major League Baseball, made the announcement. Royals catcher Miguel Olivo has been suspended for five games and fined an undisclosed amount for charging the mound, which incited the bench-clearing incident during the bottom of the fifth inning, and for throwing a punch during the incident. Royals pitcher Zack Greinke has been suspended for five games and fined an undisclosed amount for intentionally throwing at a batter during the top of the seventh inning after warnings had been issued to both Clubs following the bench. White Sox Sweep First DoubleHeader Since '01

After the Rain Comes a Rainbow Record rain fell on Chicago Saturday, postponing the White Sox scheduled doubleheader with the Tigers. Rain fell all afternoon and night on Friday, postponing that scheduled game to after the end of the "regular season." Rain fell all morning and into the early afternoon on Sunday, delaying the start of game one of the doubleheader by 3 hours and 11 minutes. According to head groundskeeper Roger Bossard, US Cellular Field saw about 9.5 inches of rain during the 50 hour span when the ACE hardware tarp saw more TV time than actual players. To his credit, the playing condition of the field was not an issue even with the record-setting rains. Technically, the White Sox are still in control of thier own destiny. They can, in theory, sweep the final series of the year at home against the Indians, and with the makeup game with the Tigers, to force the Twins to win out, a scenario that would set up a 1-game playoff on Tuesday at USCF. The following piece was commissioned--well, commissioned would imply that money had changed hands, so that's not the right word--by The Hardball Times. · Scott Merkin writes a piece on the spring training move to Glendale which is surprisingly more well rounded than the editorial that I posted last week in the comments. · Mayor Daley wants to raise the amusement tax on the Sox (and Cubs, and Bears, oh my!). Some guy, a "Chicago Sports Marketing Expert," claims this costs the Sox up to $12M a year. "The White Sox have a similar situation . . . with the Red Sox. There's a very low ticket tax in Massachusetts. The White Sox will be $10 million to $12 million less able to pay players from the same source. Does that put the Sox in a less-competitive situation with the Red Sox?
