SFist Blotter

San Francisco started the year with a bang. Literally.

· 1/1: The title of First Murder of 2008 was snatched up just a few hours after midnight. An unidentified man was shot to death on the 300 block of 9th Street in SOMA yesterday morning at around 4:50 a.m.

No suspects, no arrests.
· 1/1: Two non-fatal stabbings occurred at 2 a.m in Washington Square Park. No word yet at to whether or not a pizza parlor is to blame. We wouldn't put it past them.
· 1/2: Found by someone walking their dog along the King Estates' hiking trail in East Oakland.

SFist Reviews: Queens Of The Stone Age

Days late and dollars short, it's your SFist recap of the Queens Of The Stone Age gig last December 21 at The Warfield. Our photos were delayed by Technology. SFist.com: "Putting the 'teh' back in Tehknology." Q.) What are theees "Queens Of The Stone Age?" A.) That'd be a band that makes hip-shakin' heavy rock 'n roll for adults. On the second night of their sold-out stand at The Warfield, the red-headed sloe-eyed frontguy Josh Homme stepped to the mic between song and announced that the night before he'd been drunk as heck onstage and therefore "tonight, I'll let the music do the talking." Danged if he didn't do just that. Backed by a road-tested band, Homme whip-sawed through QOTSA's canon: b-sides, quasi-AOR hits, and desert roadtrip rumblers were delivered fresh 'n thick in front of an amped. [lien] [EN]

Ask SFist -- Subprime?

In our inbox this week, we received this profanity-laced inquiry. Ahem: I know I'm not the only one, so what the fuck does "subprime" mean anyway? Still confused. No, potty-mouthed reader, you are not alone. Believe us. To find out more, we asked one of SFist's closet pals. He's one of those ivy-league kids who now works in the banking industry, performing one of those insanely smart kind of jobs that continues to baffle us. His answer is rich, detailed, and thorough. Want to know more about "subprime," the Word of the Year? Follow the jump. Subprime mortgages are basically like teaser credit card deals - they start out at a low rate and then jump to something ridiculous. The difference is that while you run up a credit card buying candy and drugs, a house is supposed to be an investment. [lien] [EN]

SFist Photo: Christmas Decorations

We saw this house the other day while running in Noe Valley, so it seemed appropriate to go back today and snap a photo. The decorations are on a scaffold next to the house, and that's a working model train down near the bottom. If you want to check it out, it's on 21st, up the hill a bit from Church Street. SFist Gift Guide Giveaway -- NapaStyle

We already expounded the rustic virtues of Michael Chiarello's NapaStyle: a place that helps you get that Napa Valley look, feel, and taste. (Speaking of Chiarello, what happened to his show on KQED? Did he make the move over to the Food Network? While he's no Joanne Weir -- who is, really? -- we enjoyed watching him at times.) What's nice about the place is that it won't overwhelm you in the way that Williams-Sonoma and Sur La Table will. And how. For a quick last-minute gift, head on over to NapaStyle for a bottle of fancy vinegar. Or a fancy micoplane. Or a jar of fancy truffle salt. Or a fancy spork. (We'll double-check on that last item.) And to sweeten the deal, enter our contest and you just might win a $25 gift certificate. Yay, you! NapaStyle 1760 4th Street, in Berkeley 510-558. [lien] [EN]

SFist Photo: The Cosco Busan Hits the Road

It's sailing through the uprights. It's good! Larger photo here The infamous Costco (stet) Busan sucessfully navigated 'neath two major bridges this morning on her way to the Orient. SFist Tonight

-- Jackie Beat: Give 'Til It Hurts: It's a Christmastime cabaret with infamous dragster Jackie Beat. She will take some of your favorite holiday classics and render them tasteless and tacky, and you'll love every minute of it. Yes. Yes, you will. The show starts at 8 p.m. at the Empire Plush Room; $30-$32.50. -- Badmen, Hoe, Agent Deadlies, and Kittie Perm: Oh, the lunchtime grilled cheese-and-tomato sandwich memories we have from this venue. But the place still remains one of San Francisco's favorite downtown lunchtime spots. What's more, at night the lights turn low to welcome such acts as these indie jam, punk, and ska outfits. Come hear the college campus-friendly sounds starting at 7 p.m. at Beale Street Bar & Grill; $5. -- The Thin Man (1934): Insofar as the detective genre goes, this is one of its finest. [lien] [EN]

SFist Tonight

-- Colors of Christmas: Oh yeah. You know you want to hear this KOIT-ish night of soulful holiday tunes live at Davies, right? Well, we sure do. Peabo Bryson, Oleta Adams, Ben Vereen, and Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis Jr. croon R&B-tinged holiday classics and modern hits starting at 8 p.m. at Davies Symphony Hall; $20-$80. -- The SantaLand Diaries & Season's Greetings: David Sedaris' famous dysfunctional and wry Christmastime tales hit the stage. His work, while oddly cheery and warm, also manages to "uncover the disappointments and miscommunications that relentlessly haunt holiday hubbub." So true. The curtain goes up at 8 p.m. at the Eureka Theatre; $25 -- Replicator, Madroso, and Stick It In: Punk rock, indie, and classic heavy metal sets come together seamlessly to create a night perfect for drinking. Blocker: 150 Leland

Exploring San Francisco through the lens of city blocks, Blocker is a regular series by Charles Hodgkins. Look for it on SFist every other Wednesday, around the lunching hour. View the map of all published Blocker episodes. Blocker, No. 29: Leland Ave. in Visitacion Valley In the tussle over the mantle of San Francisco’s Most Tucked-Away Neighborhood, Visitacion Valley gets our vote...particularly if by “tucked-away,” one really means “neglected.” Geographic and economic isolation have contributed to infrastructural decline - and crime - here for quite some time, although earnest efforts are being made these days to turn the tide. The block of Leland between Peabody and Rutland is dually zoned for business and residence, so the street is one of Viz Valley’s main drags. [lien] [EN]

SFist Tonight

· Wu-Tang Clan and Ren the Vinyl Archaeologist: You've got the phenomenal Wu-Tang Clan plus the smooth DJ stylings of True Skool's Ren the Vinyl Archaeologist. Then, well, you have Ruby Skye. While not nearly at tool-y as its sub-venue, Slide, Skye's size and scope can make the place too much to handle at times. However, the Wu-Tang Clan's sheer coolness (or so we're told by someone certifiably awesome, into that kind of music) overrides any lingering doubts you might have about hitting this downtown locale. Besides, this week is a total blow off. There's no excuse for you not to go out tonight. The music starts at 8 p.m. at Ruby Skye; $50-100. · Ladies night at Gestalt Haus: Tonight, it seems, it's ladies night at this hot sausage fest. (Amscray, sexy gentlemen cyclists.) Every Wednesday. [lien] [EN]

SFist Tonight

· Oakland Interfaith Gospel Ensemble: This awe-inspiring gospel ensemble from "the other side of the Bay," noted for its "interfaith, multi-racial, and multi-cultural" makeup -- will get you in the mood. The Christmas-y mood, that is. And if you can't handle all of the holiday joy abounding, there are plenty of bars around the neighborhood where you can get your joy on, booze-wise. The singing starts at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. at Slim's; $15. · Midnight Mass at Grace Cathedral: Atone! Or whatever one does at a Catholic Mass an Anglican service. Anyway, we hear it's a very pretty party, if you will--lots of candles and singing and Eucharist-ness and stuff. Jesus Christ stops by to say "what up, dude?" starting at 11 p.m. at Grace Cathedral; free. · San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus: Come hear San Francisco's all. [lien] [EN]

SFist Tonight

· Festivus: Although we see no mention of the traditional "Airing of Grievances" or the post-dinner "Feats of Strength" battle, we can't imagine any proper Festivus celebration without them. Still, whether or not tonight's party follows strict Seinfeldian doctrine, a good time will be had by all at Green Aid's holiday bash. Mutaytor performs at this Black Rock City-ish night of fun. Starts at 7:30 p.m. at SomArts Cultural Center; $70. · Dub Mission: Renowned for their supreme titular dub sounds, DJs Sep and Vinnie Esparza throw down the proper beats to get properly wasted to, just before tomorrow's big ol' Jesus-loving, egg nog-swilling, glazed ham-consuming day of joy. Special guest star DJ TBA. Music starts at 9 p.m. at Elbo Room; $6. · Doctor Zhivago (1965): Come watch the film version of Boris Pasternak's award. [lien] [EN]
