The first entry : Is my smart card incompatible with Windows XP SP3?

After creating the blog account and sitting on it for last few days, finally got to publish this first entry

I got a new laptop and decided to play around with Windows XP SP3, so hooked up to the network and installed it. Install went smooth and punched in http://update.microsoft.com to get the latest updates. Everything done and laptop up and running, nothing surprising. Same look and feel and same great power of Windows XP.

The very first thing I noticed when I plugged in my Bluetooth dongle.

Windows Storage 1.0 Feature Pack Adds Blu-ray Burning, Smart Card Drivers [Windows]

Microsoft's prepping a "Storage 1.0" feature pack for Windows XP, Vista, Server 2003 and Server 2008 that adds a few useful storage options for people who really love storing things. None of these are groundbreaking, but they are fundamental to those of you who would like to master Blu-ray discs natively, or read/write ICCD/CCID smart cards. It's one of Microsoft's "feature packs", which are more than just updates in that it pushes new features out inbetween major Service Packs or even Windows iterations. [ZDNet] [lien] [EN]

Windows XP SP3 Officially Delayed [Windows XP]

It's April 29, and Microsoft has to make the unfortunate decision of delaying Windows XP SP3 due to compatibility issues between it and Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System, something none of you should be familiar with unless you work in retail. If you don't, the service pack has been unofficially available for a couple days now and you can go ahead and install it, but the final final version won't be ready for a little bit. Finances vs. Credit Part 1 of 4: Smart Financial Decisions That Hurt Your Credit Score

Question: Let’s say you have a credit card that you’ve had since your college days. It has a relatively high interest rate, and a whopper of an annual fee. Your credit has improved since then, and you are now eligible for far better offers. What do you do? Financial Answer: The smart financial decision is to close the old, unused account, and then open up a new credit account with a better interest rate, and some decent rewards. This way you benefit from your improved credit rating instead of paying a high interest rate and yearly fees on a card you no longer want. Zing! Yup - You guessed it, you just lowered your credit score… Why closing that old account will lower your credit score: Your credit score is based on several factors, and closing an old account affects two of them. Reader Question: Does Paying Off Your Credit Cards Hurt Your Score?

One of our readers, Christine, sent us this question: I have a FICO score of 824. I have credit card debt totaling $27,000. I would like to get a personal loan for $30,000(I found a good offer with a low rate and no pre payment penalties) and pay it all off. I would not get rid of my cards but I wouldn't use them either. Will paying these off hurt my score? Thank you for your question Christine! Paying off your cards will never hurt your credit score. In fact, it is probably the best thing you can do as far as your scores are concerned. I am a little worried that the first month you do this you may see your score drop for this reason: You took out the personal loan, and then paid your cards off. However in any given month your credit card companies will report the amount charged on your card for that month – even though you paid it off. [lien] [EN]

Ultimate Collection of Credit Card Posts

Once again, I want to thank all the bloggers who participated in the credit card survey. My natural response as a fellow pf blogger is to link back to them. However, they were 40+ of them and simply listing them on a post would add no value. It would be like a carnival without post! So in the spirit of this credit card survey, I decided to highlight the participants, and also highlight their best post about credit cards on their blogs (my opinion of what is best off course). Hence, I would say this is a thank you post but also a collection of really great credit card articles from the pf bloggers. I would like to consider this the Mother of all Credit Card Carnivals!. Bear in mind that some of the bloggers that participated in the survey did not really have any credit card posts on their sites. [lien] [EN]

Credit Cards Are Excellent Financial Tools

During my time spent managing my own credit, and here as Mr. Credit Card, I have learned many things about credit cards, and credit scores. I know that if you manage your credit responsibly, then your credit cards can be a valuable tool in your financial arsenal. Many people who hate credit cards believe that they do not make financial sense. I believe that if you pay your cards off every month, using them makes perfect financial sense! Used responsibly, credit cards give you all of the following things: · You Can Earn Reward Points – I have used reward points in the past for airline tickets, companion tickets, and other merchandise. Since I pay the balances on my card off monthly, I do not get charged interest and get free rewards instead. [lien] [EN]

2007 Credit Card Roundup

Well, lots of developments in the world of credit cards in 2007. Here is a rundown of the major happenings this year. End of Balance Transfer Nirvana - I think the year 2007 will be remembered as the year that the easy balance transfer deals are over. Since 2002, 0% APR balance transfer offers have been an important strategy to attract new consumers. However, since June this year, credit card companies have made life more difficult to do so. Rather than remove the 0% offers, what credit card issuers did was to actually remove the caps on balance transfer fees. By doing so, they actually made it expensive to do a balance transfer, especially if the amount was large. But why did they actually do this? Well, a couple of friends I know who work in credit card departments say it is precisely because consumers have caught on to the 0% APR BT deals. [lien] [EN]

10 Reasons Why I Love My Credit Cards

I personally love my credit cards. But I do know that there are people who do not like carrying credit cards. Most of the time, they have had bad experiences with them - like getting into mountains of credit card debt. Many of my friends also feel the “urge” to carry a balance if they carry a credit card. For myself, I have never carried a balance and it is for this reason that I really love my credit card. Here are my reasons why a credit card is actually a good thing if you can use it responsibly. 1. Earn reward points - If you pay your bills on time every month and do not carry a balance, then reward credit cards allow you to earn “points” that can be used to redeem a variety of rewards. I have used reward points for airline tickets and many merchandise and I find it such an useful feature. [lien] [EN]

Holiday Credit Card Tips For The Festive Season

Ok - Christmas and the holiday season is coming. Here are my personal holiday credit card tips for the festive season. Use up any points that are about to expire Yes, if you have a reward credit card that you have not used for a while, chances are that you may still have some reward points that are unused. Make sure you check when they expire and use them during the holiday season. Use points for merchandise or gift cards Chances are that it will be very difficult to use reward points for airline tickets during the peak season. Hence, it is probably best to redeem them for merchandise or gift cards. Take advantage of offers from reward programs As with all merchants, credit card reward programs offer discounts and special deals during the festive season. [lien] [EN]
