A Jargon-Free (97-Percent Free) Report From the Facebook Developers Conference

I’m reporting Wednesday from Facebook's second F8 conference in San Francisco. This is the company's annual forum for speaking to the thousands of entrepreneurs who create features and tools for the social network.

It is also the public event that the Palo Alto, Calif., company, and its founder, Mark Zuckerberg, use to unveil new features and new strategic directions. The company's wunderkind chief executive takes the stage at 1:30 Pacific time.

Mr. Zuckerberg is expected to primarily talk about Facebook Connect.

Mark Zuckerberg preps Steve Jobs impersonation for developers' conference [Idol Worship]

Facebook will hold its second annual F8 developers' conference on Wednesday, July 23 in San Francisco. That means we'll watch Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg take another shot at his reported goal of impersonating Steve Jobs's keynote addresses. Funny thing is, Jobs isn't actually a very stylish public speaker. Check out the end of the 60-second versions of his last two keynotes below. His speeches are stuffed with frilly adjectives. Jobs only does so well because his keynotes are full of highly anticipated announcements. Zuckerberg doesn't — can't — do grand reveals. Users got angry when Facebook dropped the News Feed on them out of nowhere in the fall of 2006. Developers are still grumbling about the pending redesign. Now, when Facebook introduces a change, it's announcement by slow drip — tremendously boring. Just like a Zuckerberg keynote. If Zuckerberg really wants to be like Jobs, he's going to have to stop worrying about the users, stop worrying about the developers, and start trusting his gut. Jobs displays utmost confidence in how his fans will receive his products — and that, not his presenting style, is what makes him so compelling. (Photo by AP/Ruttle) [lien] [EN]

Financial Services Developer Conference 2008 - Recap

The 6^th annual Financial Services Developer Conference was a hit this year. The attendees have grown year after year and have record numbers for the conference. This year’s theme was on High Performance Computing (HPC) with a sprinkle of OBA and S+S. Attendees will be hearing from presenters across a wide spectrum of organizations – including Microsoft Product Managers, key partners and industry peers. In addition, they hosted the 2^nd Annual Windows in Financial Services Developer Innovator Awards to recognize industry leading solutions leveraging the Microsoft development platform.  The target audience is both architects and business decision makers. All the sessions were fantastic this year. In the keynote session, the banking team showed off a slick Sliverlight demo. Right now it's call the Silverlight Retail Financial Services Demonstrator.  We have hosted the application online, you can find it here: http://www.cookingwithxaml.com/meals/financials/default.html The Source isn't on codeplex yet but it is on the Microsoft servers. You can find the source here: http://www.financialdevelopers.com/assets/SilverlightinFinancialsDemonostratorSource.zip.  This demo was extremely well received and we are hoping you will use the ideas from it as well as the source to implement your own Silverlight application. I got to sit in on a few great case study presentations which were very insightful. From both talking to and listening to customer presentations I got the impression that these large organizations are still struggling with the human element of SOA. Particularly around education, adoption, governance and policy. It seems everyone has a semblance of a solution or stack to take care of the technology aspects but the human elements are causing pain. To me there is no easy answer on how to combat this. But I do think there are some good places to start. I am not going to go into a great level of detail in this post as it is a little off topic. It starts with the people. A company is living and breathing with many aspects. There isn't just one culture but many with various and sometimes conflicting dynamics. It is critical to understand those dynamics and manage them. To do so we need to look at the (whatever you want to put there...)governance model. More often than not the governance model is broken. Examples of this could be that it is either to weak or too stringent for the maturity of the organization. My Presentations Insurance Keynote The modern insurance organization is growing at an increasing rate. We will show how to keep up with an ever changing market and increased complexities within the enterprise. By using modern architecture approaches we can mitigate these challenges. In this session we will review S+S, OBA, and standards that enable the insurance industry to adapt to these conditions.   Changing the Face of Banking Development The way financial services organizations build their solutions today is very different than in the past. With an increased focus on the business agility and user experience there are explorations into new approaches to solve traditional and new banking challenges. We will show you how to solve these challenges through a set of scenarios in Lending and Online Banking that expose Software + Services (S+S) and Office Business Applications (OBA) technologies These scenarios will demonstrate the value of these new architecture concepts. A special announcement will be given for a set of reference architectures. First, I want to extend a huge thank you to everyone that attended my session and asked some really great questions. The largest room in the conference was nearly to capacity, thanks for your attendance! In my session I walked through the Financial Services Component Library components for banking. I discussed the architecturally decisions that I made with each scenario and how it can help your organization with these common architectural challenges. This was largely focused on SOA and S+S.   The people what really make these conferences great and I had an opportunity to have some really stimulating dialog with some of you. Thank you for stopping by and asking such great questions! For those I was unable to talk to I hope to see you again at another event.   Resources · E-Week Article: Microsoft Aids Financial Services Developers – Darryl Taft http://www.eweek.com/c/a/Finance/Microsoft-Aids-Financial-Services-Developers/ · Industry Chats - This is a new podcast for Financial Services. Zuckerberg insults underlings, Al Gore and audience at developer conference [F8]

newVideoPlayer("/ZuckerbergDefendsApps.flv", 506, 423,""); The only word to describe Facebook cofounder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg's keynote at the company's second annual F8 developer conference.? Awkward. In this clip, Zuckerberg tries to demonstrate how useful Facebook platform applications are by comparing iLike to MySpace, Zynga to Las Vegas and Causes to — wait for it — Al Gore. Clearly, Zuck's speechwriters meant the whole thing as a kind of joke — the kind they should have known Zuck wouldn't be able to deliver. As usual, Zuck throws his employees under the bus for his inability to speak in public: "Not sure where the team came up with these examples. They're pretty funny." Yes, Mark, we're not cringing at you, we're cringing with you! [lien] [EN]

Open XML at the Microsoft Office Developer Conference 2008

Hi there! I am very excited to be here in San Jose, CA attending the Office Developer Conference 2008. We had a keynote this morning with Bill Gates where he showed a video with his plans for retirement and where he talked about the value proposition of the 2007 Office system as a development platform. Bill talked about many of the different products and technologies that you can use to build Office Business Applications (OBAs), including the Open XML formats! Open XML is an open standard for word-processing documents, presentations, and spreadsheets that can be freely implemented by multiple applications on different platforms. Open XML is designed to faithfully represent existing word-processing documents, presentations, and spreadsheets that are encoded in binary formats defined by Microsoft Office applications. The reason for the need for Open XML is simple: billions of documents now exist but, unfortunately, the information in those documents is tightly coupled with the programs that created them. The purpose of the Open XML standard is to decouple documents created by Microsoft Office applications so that they can be manipulated by other applications independent of proprietary formats and without the loss of data. You can find more detailed documentation about Open XML at the Open XML Formats Resource Center and at OpenXMLDeveloper.org. If you are attending the Microsoft Office Developer Conference 2008, and want to learn more about Open XML, here's some information that you may find useful: Open XML Conference Sessions What's Up, DOC? Open XML Formats, OpenDocument Format, and the Revolutionary Implications of XML in Productivity Applications: Industry debate about the relative merits of Open XML Formats and OpenDocument Format highlights the significance of the productivity application market shift from binary and propriety file formats to vendor- and product-independent XML models. The competitive stakes are huge, and the related political posturing is sometimes perplexing. In this overview, Burton Group Research Director Peter O'Kelly introduces Open XML Formats, OpenDocument Format, and related World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) standards, and projects their implications for the future of productivity application-bases information management. Track: Executive Session: EXE104 (Feb 12 – 10:45 am to noon) Presenter : Peter O'Kelly (Burton Group Research Director) Developing document centric solutions using Open XML and VSTO "v3": The coming of the 2007 Office System introduced the Open XML File Formats, an XML based file format allowing deep integration of documents in your business processes. No longer is a document a black-box containing data, instead the document is the data. In this session you will learn about solution capabilities of Open XML, how to work with data and documents on the server and how to enable Informa tion Workers on the client side using Visual Studio Tools for Office ""v3"". Track: Client Session: CLI304 Presenter: Wouter van Vugt Using LINQ to XML to query and transform Open XML documents: Learn how to use the powerful .NET language-integrated query (LINQ) to process Open XML documents. See how these concepts are applied to build the Open XML Power Tools which are a set of Windows Powershell cmdlets that help you build Open XML document workflows quickly and easily. Track: Client Session: CLI306 Presenter : Eric White (Microsoft) , Johann Granados (StaffDotNet) Generating Enterprise Content using InfoPath 2007, SharePoint and the Microsoft SDK for Open XML Formats: Be introduced to the Microsoft SDK for Open XML formats and show how developers can use the SDK and InfoPath 2007 to generate Microsoft Office documents on the server from data stored in SharePoint form libraries. Track: Client Session: CLI307 Presenter : John Holiday Office Business Application that Supports Microsoft's Top Executives: Discover how Office Open XML file format allows developers to manipulate server side workbooks to provide end users with secure scorecard viewing experience in the browser and not sacrifice Microsoft Excel 2007 rich client functionality while meeting the requirement of no client side code install. Track: Real World Session: RLW302 Presenter: Sergei Gundorov, Mike Reese Use the Open XML SDK and LINQ to XML to Program the Open XML File Formats: Although the packaging API makes it possible to manipulate the Open XML Formats directly, it doesn't make it easy. The Open XML SDK provides a consistent and neat wrapper around the API, making it far easier to get to the parts you need. Once you get to the part, however, you're still simply working with XML content. To make this easier, LINQ to XML provides a superb tool. Both C# and Visual Basic provide support for LINQ to XML, but Visual Basic adds specific features that make the process far easier. In this session, you'll see how to use the Open XML SDK, LINQ to XML, and Visual Basic's superb support for XML handling to manipulate Open XML File Formats. Special attention will be paid to the issues involved in handling namespace resolution, a tricky issue in any situation. Track: Client Session: CLI314 Presenter : Ken Getz Hands On Labs Exploring the New, Flexible XML Programmability in Microsoft® Office Word 2007: Be introduced to the concepts of the XML data store and XML binding features of Microsoft Office Word 2007. Program against a sample document while learning how to work with structured information in Office Word 2007 that is stored independently of the presentation surface. Explore the capabilities of the new data store and XML binding and allow you to gain insight on how these features enable the creation of document-based Office Word 2007 solutions. Understanding the Structure and Solution Capabilities of the Open XML Formats: Become familiar with the new 2007 Microsoft Office programs file formats. Examine sample documents for each of the 2007 Office programs that implement the Open XML Format. Learn how to edit documents by directly manipulating files without the use of the Microsoft Office programs. Explore the new default Microsoft Office programs file formats and gain insights on the new solution possibilities they enable for creating solutions. Open XML Booth Ken Getz, Wouter Van Vugt, Sanjay Kumar Madhva, and I will be at the Open XML booth. If you are attending the conference, come talk to us! Office Developer Conference Developer Swag

My colleagues developed some excellent developer resources to coincide with this week's Office Developer Conference in sunny San Jose. The OBA Composition Reference Toolkit is a tool to aid with the rapid assembly of components into new OBAs. The toolkit is itself an OBA, a meta-OBA that helps build OBAs. The toolkit uses a WPF client to provide an elegant visualization of and surface upon which the OBA components may be selected and assembled. Microsoft has published several OBA "Reference Applications Packs" or RAPs that provide the guidance and sample code to help educate folks on how to build OBAs of their own. The theme continues with the following two scenarios: OBA for Customer Support Management OBA for Sales Proposal Document Management [lien] [EN]

Verizon Open Development Conference Live [Verizon]

We're at Verizon's Open Development Conference, where they'll be pulling back the curtain on their Any App, Any Device open network initiative, revealing all the gory specs and details for building your own superphone and lording it on Verizon's network. Update: The specs, we've got 'em, plus Verizon's open development site—hit the jump and scroll down. Whoa: They've got a massive disclaimer about the FCC's anti-collusion rule on the 700MHz auction, saying they can't talk about it. Translation: They won something. Open Development New Customer Choice Customers will have: •Freedom to download their favorite apps • Various payment options •Can choose extent of relationship with Verizon:No "equipment contracts or early termination fees" The timeline is impressively brisk: "Open for Business" by the second half of 2008, with a certification process in place by the end of this quarter. They can't talk about enough about just how awesome Verizon's network is. Hardware developers have a few ways to get their wares into your hands: Retail Model: Developers on their own for advertising and distribution—Verizon will "activate" customers and get them onto the network "easily." They're also on the hook for most of the technical support. Data plans are totally separate from voice plans to accommodate data-only devices. Electronic bills only, no paper! Three pieces of hardware Verizon gives as "examples": Ruggedized PDA, digital camera with a wireless chip for transmitting photos from anywhere, and a gaming device. Wholesale Model: Developer buys airtime and data plans from Verizon, then sells them to you. Electronic billing only. Example: Wireless home security (if case some enterprising thief cuts the phone line, it goes wireless). Custom model coming later, for say, digital music devices. They're willing to offer up their 3 million song catalog. (!) Certification for Developers: Simple enough: Build a device, submit it to Verizon for network certification, they send it back and the developer registers it. Activation for You: You buy it at Best Buy or Wally World and activate it online. This is where they roadblock non-certified devices—if the serial number isn't on the certified list, it won't activate, and you can't take it on the network. If it's a wholesale deal, where you buy data from the devicemaker, they take care of all that for you. (Obviously.) Verizon CTO on stage. Interesting, the IP-based "core network" will be the same even after it transitions to 4G—the shift to LTE is just changing RF. Promises to be really aggressive on 4G since their EV-DO push paid off. Finally, The Specs and Certification Requirements are layered from industry standards to Verizon Wireless-branded apps—open devices fall just above industry standards. "Specification is focused on essentials" for operating on the network without harming it. They'll go live today at 11:30am at their online portal for open development. There will be a fee for certification but they promise it'll be quick—just 4 weeks. It's pass/fail only. The more devices you send in, the quicker it'll be certified. They won't specify the user experience at all—no more ugly red UI! Hurray! If your device uses multiple wireless standards, like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, etc.—they're all got to run at the same time without going wonky. LNP compliance is a must. The Cert Process and Requirements 911 and location-based services are required. Data-only devices have to pick up the CDMA-2000 network. Yep, four weeks from submission to cert—not too shabby at all. Developers have to register with Verizon. Certification is not good for life. Devices have to be re-approved every 36 months. If your radio module isn't FCC-approved already, "don't bring it to our labs." So the 4-week cert process DOES NOT include dealing w/ the FCC. "Bring to us quality devices ready to pass on the first go." Whoa, hold it! Four weeks is for certification. After the four-week cert, then it has another two weeks of "infrastructure interop testing," like with Alcatel-Lucent, and then another two weeks of field interoperability testing. So you're looking at eight weeks of Verizon testing, really. Talking about where they've seen potential for innovation, Verizon CEO mentions the 700Mhz spectrum. Yep, they probably won it. And that's it for the keynote! [Verizon Open Development] [lien] [EN]

Thanks to everyone who attended my talk about the new ASP.NET MVC framework at the Health & Life Sciences Developer Conference in Atlantic City last week!  I've posted my slides for viewing up on SkyDrive: Credit goes to Scott Hanselman as I borrowed heavily from his MVC presentation at Mix 08 earlier this year.  I showed code from two projects during my talk.  The first was the default project that the MVC template creates for you in Visual Studio.  The second project was a complete application that demonstrated CRUD access to a table in the Northwind Database.  That sample was put together by Scott, and can be viewed here: ASP.NET MVC Cheesy Northwind Sample Code The MVC framework is barely 6 months old, yet there is already a LOT of information about it out there.  Unfortunately, or fortunately (depending on how you view it), it's not in the documentation.  As with any new technology that's in beta, the documentation is a little weak at the current time.  That will improve over time.  But for now, most of the good information is out there in blogs from both the MVC product team and the community. To get started, visit the ASP.NET MVC Framework web site at: http://www.asp.net/mvc  At that site, you will find the latest MVC installation download and official product documentation.  For some of the best information, follow the blogs from some of the folks involved with the development of ASP.NET MVC Framework: · Scott Guthrie · Phil Haack · Scott Hanselman · Rob Conery From there, you'll want to check out some of the other MVC resources out there.  There's a lot of great blogs about MVC outside of Microsoft too.  Chris Shoemaker has put together a decent MVC link list here: 47 ASP.NET MVC Resources to Rock Your Development Finally, DotNetKicks seems to have at least one or two new MVC posts listed everyday.  You can see all MVC posts on DotNetKicks aggregated here.
