[Guest post by DRJ] I’ve given up on where Obama stands on taxes, except I’m sure mine will be higher if he’s elected President. As for Social Security, the New York Times’ The Caucus valiantly attempts a summary of his many positions but the bottom line is this commentary from a nonpartisan source: “The thing about a doughnut hole is that it is empty,” Howard Gleckman, editor of TaxVox, the blog of the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center, wrote Thursday. “There is nothing. COLUMBUS, Ohio – Halfway through a two-week economic tour, Senator Barack Obama turned the topic to Social Security on Friday, sharply criticizing Senator John McCain for his stance and suggesting that Mr. McCain is a flip-flopper. My opponent in this general election, John McCain – his idea of Social Security amounts to four more years of what was attempted and failed under George W.
Press coverage of Barack Obama’s Social Security proposal in Columbus, Ohio last week made many of the usual mistakes any time there’s a story about the government’s “third rail” program. But in this case it missed what would be a historic de-linkage of payments made into the system from benefits paid out.
Note: I had a post up for two hours that was meant to be held until after the Pajamas Media blackout. This happened because PJM put off publishing the article until tomorrow (it was originally targeted for Wednesday), and I didn’t reschedule my post accordingly. Apologies to PJM for the brief oversight, and to BizzyBlog readers for having to pull the post.

With Senator John McCain increasingly trying to portray him as a traditional tax-and-spend liberal, Senator Barack Obama appears to be reducing the sweep of proposals he has made to increase government revenues by extending the Social Security payroll tax and raising the capital gains tax. Mr.
Note: This column was first posted at Pajamas Media on Saturday morning. In a speech in Columbus, Ohio on June 13, Barack Obama proposed a massive tax increase to fund the Social Security program. A Democratic presidential candidate proposing a tax increase is not exactly news. But this is no ordinary tax increase.
In honor of the 73rd anniversary of President Franklin Roosevelt’s signing of the Social Security Act, the New Mexico Democratic Party attempted to sing “Happy 73rd Birthday to Social Security” outside of a McCain campaign office, “only to have the birthday cake thrown in the trash by the campaign”:
What the hell, Wisconsin? The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel is reporting that for the second time in just over a year, the state of Wisconsin has printed mailing labels that display the social security. This is a content summary only. Visit my website for full links, other content, and more!
Look, Wisconsin. We weren't kidding around last time. We really did mean it when we said that it wasn't cool to print people's Social Security Numbers where anyone can see them. How can people who. This is a content summary only. Visit my website for full links, other content, and more!
Two Illinois congressmen are introducing legislation with the goal of upgrading that flimsy paper piece of crap we call a social security card to include a photo, fingerprint and computer ID chip.
In an interview published in the Wall Street Journal yesterday, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) abandoned his plan for Social Security, in which he proposes “supplementing the current Social Security system with personal accounts. Instead, McCain told the WSJ that “as part of Social Security reform, I believe that private savings accounts are a part of [.
David C. Richardson, the owner of Rhode Island Refrigeration in Providence, Rhode Island, overheard two customers speaking Spanish to each other, so he asked them to produce proof of citizenship. According to them, he then threatened to call Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and make a citizen's arrest, although Richardson denies he picked up the phone, but not that he made the threats.
Paukl Krugman: It's now better than it's been since 1993. At long last the damage from the disastrous Clinton administration has been cleaned up by President George Walker Bush. He has returned Social Security to the solvency it had when his daddy left the White House in 1993.
I see from comments on an earlier post, plus some of the incoming links, that the whole “there is no trust fund, so the system will be in crisis in 2017″ thing is still out there. So I’m just going to reprint what I wrote about this three years ago: Social Security is a government program supported by a dedicated tax, like highway maintenance.
On ABC’s This Week today, Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) falsely claimed that Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) “is not for the private accounts to take the place of social security. “He’s for what Bill Clinton used to call Social Security plus,” said Lieberman. Lieberman didn’t disagree, however, when host George Stephanopoulos pointed out that McCain had “disputed [.
It's here. I will post it at BizzyBlog Saturday morning (link will not work until then) under the title, “Social Security to Cause Fiscal Headaches Within Just Two Years.
Two whistleblower lawsuits have been filed recently against insurers, faulting them for requiring unnecessary and repeated disability applications with Social Security before they'll pay out any benefits. One person says her disability insurer, the Unum Group—which was only paying her $50 a month for a temporary injury she was almost certain to recover from—called her 10 times to ask her about her Social Security disability application.

The Latest Social Security Trustees' Report Masks the Near-Immediate Nature of Uncle Sam's Budget Problem The Social Security Administration’s 2008 Old-Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance (OASDI) Trustees Report has contained this sterile language for several years:
A blogger noticed the Oklahoma Department of Corrections was making the Social Security numbers of thousands of registered sex offenders viewable through a security hole on a state website. Even after he notified the department, the problem remained. Only when he showed how to make state employees' personal information visible did the state fix the problem.
On Bill Bennett’s radio show yesterday, former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina — who is currently a leading economic adviser to Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) — said that McCain is interested in “taking on finally the reform of Medicare and Social Security. “He is absolutely convinced that this must be tackled in his term as president,” [.
