TNT Notes Jan. 3: The Portland Trailblazers Are For Real

TNT Notes Jan. 3: The Portland Trailblazers Are For Real

The Portland/Chicago game was great. Portland is the truth. What was Ben Gordon thinking on that last turnover before Jack’s 3 point play? As far as Seattle, they have to somehow get consistency or they’ll be in a position to draft Michael Beasley. That might be a good thing for Oklahoma City

Barkley on the Chicago Bulls struggles this season: “Ben Gordon takes a lot of tough shots and (Kirk) Hinrich is a short guy. I don’t think it was fair that (former Bulls head coach) Scott Skiles got fired.

TNT Notes Jan. 10th: The Detroit Pistons Defeat The San Antonio Spurs In Big Road Win It’s a Wu Friday at The Commission Last night’s notes. Enjoy. Funny how Barkley’s Sheed comments fit in to our discussion. Smith on the talent of the Detroit Pistons versus the Boston Celtics: “If you look at the ‘Big Three,’(Celtics Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen) no matter if they are better than anyone they face, they aren’t that much better than Rasheed (Wallace), Chauncey Billups and Rip Hamilton, and then you add in (Antonio) McDyess and Tayshaun Prince. (The Celtics) are not really more talented than Detroit.” TNT analyst Reggie Miller joined the pre-game show prior to the Spurs/Pistons match-up. Miller on whether the Spurs/Pistons match. NBA On TNT Notes - The MLK Day Editon: Carmelo Anthony Goes Down; Kobe Bryant and the Lakers KeepPace Ernie Johnson, Kenny Smith and Charles Barkley Barkley on the impact of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in his lifetime: “Even the short period of time (Dr. King) lived, his legacy speaks for itself. Some people will live to be 100 and don’t do anything (in their lifetime). If you get to live a certain part of your life, you should have accomplished something. What Dr. King, Rosa Parks, Malcolm X and all the other civil rights leaders have accomplished will live on into eternity. It doesn’t matter how long you live, it’s what you did while you were alive.” Smith on Dr. King’s legacy living on through sports: “Growing up in Queens and playing sports, the first time that I felt my ethnicity didn’t matter when was when I played sports. Magic Johnson on Miami Heat center Alonzo Mourning’s knee injury that he suffered Wednesday night against the Atlanta Hawks: “Alonzo (Mourning) has meant so much to the game of basketball, both on the court and off. Off the court he’s done more than anybody in the city of Miami, he is a guy who is relentless with what he wants to do for children in Miami. (On Wednesday night) I told him, ‘Now you start your life after basketball, continue on the path of giving back and you can start being a business man. This (injury) just sped up the process.’” Barkley on Heat center Alonzo Mourning’s charity efforts: “Alonzo Mourning is a great player and a great guy. [lien] [EN]

You get to see great players and you get to play with those great players. It was great when I got to see Charles (Barkley) and Dr. J (Julius Erving) and Michael (Jordan) and Larry (Bird). TNT Notes January 18th: “The Suns Are Softer Than Tissue Paper”

TNT Notes January 18th: “The Suns Are Softer Than TissuePaper” TNT NBA Tip-off presented by AutoTrader.com Ernie Johnson, Kenny Smith and Charles Barkley Spurs guard Manu Ginobili on how the Spurs defended LeBron James in the 2007 NBA Finals: “We didn’t let (LeBron James) get any easy lay-ups. He got two dunks in the four games (in the Finals) and that’s way under his average. We made him set for jumpers and it worked for us. He didn’t have a great series shooting from the outside. I don’t think his teammates did their part either. They didn’t make any shots to create some space for (him), so we were successful collapsing (in) the paint and not making anything easy for him.” Barkley on second year Cleveland Cavaliers guard Daniel Gibson: “At this stage of (Daniel Gibson’s) career. Preview & Chat: The Portland Trailblazers

Records: Lakers 0-0 Trailblazers 0-0 Offensive ratings: Lakers NA Trailblazers NA Defensive ratings: Lakers NA Trailblazers NA Projected Starting Lineups: Lakers: Derek Fisher, Kobe Bryant, Vladimir Radmanovic, Pau Gasol, Andrew Bynum Trailblazers: Steve Blake, Brandon Roy, Travis Outlaw, Lamarcus Aldridge, Greg Oden Lakers notes: No better way to start off the season than with an old rival on the cusp of restarting said rivalry. Off the court, the Lakers picked up the option on Jordan Farmar. That was the easy part, the harder part comes in the next couple of years as they figure out how much to pay him. But you don't let an emerging starting PG walk away, so picking up his option year was obvious. Not much else in terms of Lakers notes, as we just did the team preview. [lien] [EN]

Preview and Chat: The Portland Trailblazers

Records: Lakers 39-17 (1 seed); Blazers 29-27 (10 seed, 4.5 games out of the playoffs) Offensive ratings: Lakers 113.1 (2nd); Blazers 108.2 (14th) Defensive ratings: Lakers 106.4 (8th); Blazers 109 (20th) Projected Starting Lineups: Lakers: Derek Fisher, Kobe Bryant, Luke Walton, Lamar Odom, Pau Gasol Blazers: Martel Webster (or Jarret Jack), Steve Blake, Travis Outlaw, LaMarcus Aldridge, Joel Przybilla Lakers Notes: Tonight's expected starting five for the Lakers (with Walton in for Radman) has an offensive rating as a group of 138.46 and a defensive rating of 99.03 (thanks to Basketballvalue.com). That, people, is crazy good. The Lakers offense is a lot of fun to watch right now (unless you are Nate McMillan tonight) and a key reason is something often overlooked when focusing on shooting and scoring — the Lakers pass the ball well. Preview & Chat: The Portland Trailblazers

Records: Lakers 41-17 (1 seed); Blazers 30-28 (10 seed, five games out of the playoffs) Offensive ratings: Lakers 113.6 (2nd); Blazers 107.7 (14th) Defensive ratings: Lakers 105.8 (6th); Blazers 108.8 (19th) Projected Starting Lineups: Lakers: Derek Fisher, Kobe Bryant, Luke Walton, Lamar Odom, Pau Gasol Blazers: Martel Webster, Steve Blake, Travis Outlaw, LaMarcus Aldridge, Joel Przybilla Lakers Notes: What can I say about how much fun the Lakers are to watch right now, and how much fun they are having on the court, that is not summed up in this clip: How Good Are The Blazers Going To Be? I made a bet with Dave from the fine Blazer's Edge blog on this game: The losing team's blogger has to write a post for the other blog on why the Blazers/Lakers are to be feared in the coming years. Preview and Chat: Portland Trailblazers

Records: Lakers 53-24 (2 seed); Blazers 38-39 (10 seed) Offensive ratings: Lakers 114.5 (3rd); Blazers 107.9 (19th) Defensive ratings: Lakers 107.3 (7th); Blazers 109.6 (16th) Projected Starting Lineups: Lakers: Derek Fisher, Kobe Bryant, Vladimir Radmanovic, Lamar Odom, Pau Gasol Blazers: Steve Blake, Brandon Roy, James Jones, LaMarcus Aldridge, Channing Frye? (Przybilla is out after breaking his hand on the rim, so I'm not sure what McMillan does) Lakers Notes: Luke Walton is a game-time decision tonight, although in my mind a few more days on the bench are probably good for him. Plus, we know his weakness is matching up with long and athletic teams, and we get one of those tonight. Last game against Sacramento saw some of the best defense the Lakers have played in a while — the Kings never shot better than 42% for a quarter after the first quarter. [lien] [EN]

Preview and Chat: the Portland Trailblazers

Records: Lakers 50-24 (3 seed), Portland 38-36 (trying to finish above .500) Offensive Ratings: Lakers 109.6 (3rd), Portland 104.1 (15th) Defensive Ratings: Lakers 102.9 (6th) Portland 105.3 (18th) Projected Lineups: Lakers- Derek Fisher, Kobe Bryant, Vlad Rad, Lamar Odom, Pau Gasol Blazers- Steve Blake, Martell Webster, Travis Outlaw, Lamarcus Aldridge, Joel Pryzbilla Gasol is Back! (Probably) The Home Stretch: This is the home stretch for the Lakers, the last 8 games of what has been a great season. We have talked a lot about potential playoff opponents and we peruse the box-scores of other teams to see who is winning and who is losing. The main thing the Lakers need to do going into this home stretch is focus on them. That means improving perimeter defense, not settling for jump shots and most importantly. [lien] [EN]

Open Game Thread #31: Bulls vs. Portland Trailblazers

[Thanks to bullshooter for tonight's game preview, even though he still believes in this Ben Gordon benching thing, and hates Tyrus Thomas. -Matt] A Tale of Two Franchises or Two Draft Picks, or Two Forwards... Tonight brings the Portland Trailblazers to town.  If the Bulls are copying Detriot's blueprint for building a champion out of many good players, but no dominant ones, then the Trailblazers are copying the Bulls blueprint for drafting winners from strong college programs, at least according to GM Kevin Pritchard.  The Bulls' and Trailblazers' fate was also intertwined by a 2006 draft day trade.  In that trade, the Bulls swapped the rights to LaMarcus Aldridge taken with the second pick and a conditional second round pick for the rights to Tyrus Thomas taken with the fourth pick and young forward and Blogabull favorite Viktor Khyrapa. 10 Notes on Residential Housing

David Merkel submits: I’m waiting for the day when I can write upbeat stuff about housing…  when I can buy homebuilder and mortgage stocks and crow about my gains.  I hope I live two more years. ;)  (Many thanks to Calculated Risk for their excellent coverage of residential housing.) 1) The first thing to note is that residential real estate values are still falling nationwide.  That affects Mortgage Equity Withdrawal [MEW] and derivatively, consumption.Complete Story » [lien] [EN]

TNT NBA Notes December 27: LeBron James And The Cavs Win A Big Game On Road

TNT NBA Notes December 27: LeBron James And The Cavs Win A Big Game On Road Chuck better get ready for that long walk in a speedo! Sick last night and the better part of today. Thank God my sis is in the medical field. Thanks Sis. TBR, why you call me out on Webb? With stomach pains, it wasn’t a good time to laugh bruh. Notes from last night. Enjoy. Cavaliers forward LeBron James response to critics predicting that the Cavaliers won’t make the playoffs this season: “People have their opinions and (the Cavaliers) have to keep proving people wrong and at the same time, we have to go out as professional athletes and continue to get better. We don’t come into the season at this point talking about making the playoffs; we want to win the Championship. Right now. [lien] [EN]

Wizards Summer League Game Blog 1 v. Portland Trailblazers

Rick Kamla and Steve Snapper Jones guiding us on Comcast via NBA TV tonight....Chenier and Buckhantz are probably getting sloshed at the Green Turtle. Kamla promises that Nick Young will dazzle. I've never been as pumped about watching a Wizards summer league game before, even when I made it to one live in Vegas in '06. This is a very mature summer league squad, it's worth paying attention to the quality of shots (I know, obscene to expect they will be anywhere near decent) and turnovers. Let's start the show. Q1 Nick Young starts out with a smooth fading baseline turnaround over Jerryd Bayless for the first points of the game. He looked very comfortable in doing so. Travel Troubles: Last night, the Wiz were scheduled for a Sunday 8:30 pm commercial flight out of DC to Vegas. The rain hit hard beginning around 6. [lien] [EN]

Overpaying for Real Bacon, Simply Put, Sucks [Night Note]

To: Crecente From: Bashcraft RE: On the Road to PAX: The Idaho Edition Every one of these PAX trip Day Notes I read, I keep hearing Willie Nelson sing "On The Road Again". Ever had Japanese bacon? It's awful. Simply awful. There are loads of food they get right here, but damn, they get bacon so very wrong. It's actually sold (and prepared) so that it can be eaten out of the package — meaning it's already been cooked, and it's not bacon as most Americans know it. Today, Mrs. Bashcraft went to Costco, came back with bacon, American bacon, this bacon, actually. As Fahey so eloquently put it: Farmer John. Our Pigs Are Totally Fucking Doomed. I've never had it, but it looks like real bacon. Nor did I do a taste test to see if I can eat it out of the package. The surprising thing is that while most Costco stuff is sold in bulk. Greener SimCity Virtual World as Channel to Influence Real World Behaviors

Electronic Arts (EA)’s SimCity, the popular simulation game that challenges users to build and run a metropolis, is set to release its latest version in mid-November - SimCity Societies - and is generating a lot of buzz in the process.   One way that sets Societies apart from previous versions is its new functionality that requires users to take economic and environmental factors into consideration when making energy production decisions.  (Other simulation games that require users to make trade-offs between energy and environmental concerns include Energyville, recently launched by Chevron and The Economist Group; ElectroCity, sponsored by Genesis Energy in New Zealand; and My Abode, sponsored by the UK’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.) While this novel functionality is generating significant buzz in the market. [lien] [EN]

The stand is also an interesting tweak, could point to it having a TV tuner inside. If it is thinner than N95 and with some additional specs thrown in, I could maybe forgive the N81 inspired overly glossy design.. · Alessandro says: December 20th, 2007 at 8:19 am Ciao Stefan, it does look that bad, and the big screen looks really great. Well, let's see what are the specs! Alessandro · Nikos says: December 20th, 2007 at 8:29 am I think it's something better than the N95. Maybe an FP2 device: there is a middle softkey labeled "Open" like in the latest SDK. [lien] [EN]

NY Times notes that many media companies are launching vitual worlds for kids

I noted earlier this year that big companies have led the latest surges in virtual worlds, with many of these virtual worlds targeting kids and teens. Today’s New York Times concurs in an article about web playgrounds for the very young, which focuses on Club Penguin and Webkinz but also namechecks a number of newer or upcoming virtual worlds aimed at kids: …Now the likes of the Walt Disney Company, which owns Club Penguin, are working at warp speed to pump out sister sites. “Get ready for total inundation,” said Debra Aho Williamson, an analyst at the research firm eMarketer, who estimates that 20 million children will be members of a virtual world by 2011, up from 8.2 million today. … Disney last month introduced a “Pirates of the Caribbean” world aimed at children 10 and older.
