  How's this for a truly awesome photo? Shown in the foreground is Space Shuttle Atlantis on Launch Pad A. The shuttle in the background is Endeavour, on Launch Pad B. Currently, both shuttles are locked and loaded for launch, should something go wrong up in space with the October 11 Atlantis mission. 

• Historic Photos of Paris

  I should be doing my taxes, but instead I made these doodles from a book that arrived in the mail. Historic Photos of Paris is full of evocative images of old Paris you can dream about. These figures look to have stepped out of Balzac or Guy de Maupassant's novels. I'd rather be strolling under the Eiffel Tower on a Sunday than doing.

  Le secrétaire d'Etat aux Transports, Dominique Bussereau, a exprimé mardi son "mécontentement" et jugé "inacceptable" le délai de "plusieurs mois" avant de sanctionner un agent des Affaires maritimes qui aurait permis la prise de photographies pornog. 

• Baikonur Cosmodrome in Big, Beautiful Pictures [Space]

  I am so drawn to all things Baikonur. It's been Russia's primary spaceport since 1955—the world's oldest. Maybe it's the sharpness of the pop in my mind when considering many of humankind's most stunning moments of excelsior have originated from the dusty, rusty Kazakh steppe. Maybe it's because Sergio Leone should have made a movie there, with Clint Eastwood squatting around the blast holes and radar towers (I'm calling rights to a Baikonur space western right now—let's work on that script). 

• China Building Cylon Basestar Space Engines [Space]

  While NASA is having problems reaching milestones for their new Ares rockets—the conventional rocket that will get the US to the moon and Mars—China is actually trying to build a reactionless space thruster like the ones used by Cylon Basestars. Yes, that's science fiction, but the engine is theoretically possible.

• Google Founders' Fighter Jet Will Fly NASA Missions

  A NASA official said Friday that the top Googlers’ new fighter jet will be used mostly to fly missions for the agency that four other jets owned by Google’s top executives could not handle. ��They are dedicating the plane primarily for NASA payloads,” said Steve Zornetzer, associate director of the NASA Ames Research Center, which operates Moffett Field near the Google campus.

  Comcast's Twitter-jockey has his own New York Times story. Awww. We love Frank, even though we probably make his life really crappy by posting lots of Comcast complaints. Oh well! Sorry, Frank. As effective as we've found Frank to be, the story does highlight one of his faults, unintentional creepiness:

• STS-123 : la navette Endeavour rentre à bon port avec Léopold Eyharts

  Au terme de sa mission de 16 jours (STS-123) à destination de la Station spatiale internationale (ISS), la Navette Endeavour de la NASA a regagné la Terre sans encombre avec ses sept membres d'équipage, dont l'astronaute français de l'ESA Léopold Eyharts, qui a passé près de 49 jours en orbite pour procéder au raccordement du laboratoire européen Columbus à l'ISS ainsi qu'à sa recette.

• Nasa's Messenger Sends First Full Fly-By Image of Mercury [Space]

  Yesterday at 4: AM east time, Nasa's Messenger (MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry and Ranging spacecraft) flew by just 125 miles over the surface of Mercury, the closest planet to the Sun and the smallest in the Solar System. This is the first time in history that the whole planet is going to be photographed in its entirety by an Earthling probe, with amazing resolution and ultra-crisp detail.
