Historic Photo Shows Atlantis and Endeavour Together for the Last Time [Nasa]

How's this for a truly awesome photo? Shown in the foreground is Space Shuttle Atlantis on Launch Pad A. The shuttle in the background is Endeavour, on Launch Pad B. Currently, both shuttles are locked and loaded for launch, should something go wrong up in space with the October 11 Atlantis mission. As Tom explains over at his Astronomy Blog, having two shuttles on the pad at the same time is rare, but it is not a cause for concern.

When the ISS is not available for rescue purposes, as it might not be for this mission.

Historic Photos of Paris

I should be doing my taxes, but instead I made these doodles from a book that arrived in the mail... Historic Photos of Paris is full of evocative images of old Paris you can dream about... These figures look to have stepped out of Balzac or Guy de Maupassant's novels. I'd rather be strolling under the Eiffel Tower on a Sunday than doing...taxes Or fishing along the Seine. [lien] [EN]

Diorama construction photos

The Natural History Museum in NYC has put a collection of historical photos online, including some fantastic images of the construction of some of their famous displays and dioramas. Pruned pulled out a few of the best for a recent post. During the first decades of the 20th century, the AMNH posed its T. rex bones in an upright position, propped on its tail. [lien] [EN]

NYT: Campaign Photos Happy Clinton, McCain, Obama — Sinister Romney

From the "a picture says a thousands words" file, take a gander at the New York Times' campaign graphic. It shows a happy and smiling Hillary Clinton, John McCain and Barack Obama all of whom are smiling widely, showing teeth and looking quite inviting. Then comes the photo of Mitt Romney. For Mitt the NYT chose a picture with a closed-mouth, wry smile, looking down at the viewer. [lien] [EN]

Lindsay Lohan Hollywood Hills Photo Shoot

I love to see behind the scene pictures of photo shoots. It’s interesting to see the very real work that goes into the glam photo spread in high fashion magazines. This time there is the added bonus of seeing Lindsay Lohan and Sam Ronson sharing private moment. I’m starting to think that these two are the sweetest couple in Hollywood right now. [lien] [EN]

Angel Lola Luv in Black Man’s Magazine Photo Shoot of the Day

I was talking to a black girl last night about how I have a black girl fetish but am deprived of the shit because black girls want nothing to do with old, broke, Mexicans with small dicks, and makes me wish I was George Washington, and all these hot bitches worked for me for free, or some shit, so she sent me a picture of her tits to help ease the pain, but she didn’t understand that my black girl fetish. China: No, But This Time Really Is Different

Michael Pettis submits: Today is relatively quiet on the China-financial-news front (the SSE Composite was down 36 bps, but not much else happened), so rather than discuss the most recent numbers and events and their possible implications for financial policy, I want to write about something a tad more theoretical. For the past two months there has been a big buzz about a paper (. [lien] [EN]

Shoutout in The Washington Times

photo by Michael Connor for The Washington Times We get a shoutout in the Washington Times in an article, "The art of the batter," on designer cupcakes: Sisters Sophie LaMontagne and Katherine Kallinis thought they would open a cute little shop, bake a bunch of batches and have a nice business when they opened Georgetown Cupcake in February. New York Times discovers a venture capitalist [Fred Wilson]

Fred Wilson's venture-capital firm, the paper of record tells us, "has built its portfolio making small bets on young companies." That is an excellent definition of early-stage venture capital. But is Wilson, of Union Square Ventures, to be congratulated with a glowing New York Times profile merely for doing his job? Apparently so. The real thing that distinguishes Wilson from his peers are not his practices or his profits. [lien] [EN]
