Changes in Functionality from Windows Server 2003 with SP1 to Windows Server 2008

Hi All,

This document describes new features and technologies, which were not available in Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1 (SP1), that will help to increase the security of computers running Windows Server 2008, increase productivity, and reduce administrative overhead.
These topics apply to the next release of Windows Server 2008, based on the functionality expected to be included in the Beta releases in 2007. They do not describe all of the changes that are included in Windows Server 2008.

To transform Windows Server 2008 in a Workstation (to directly develop on MOSS 2007)

Hello, Few days ago I changed my professional notebook/laptop for a real “working” machine. Working on advanced MOSS 2007 projects, setting up directly MOSS on my host OS is nice, so did I. Windows Server 2008 Standard RC1 EN, bytes from MSDN, looks like the best candidate for this. Once setup (it’s Vista “like” setup screens), the OS runs smoothly, and working pleasure is here. But, Windows Server 2008 is hardened compared to Windows Server 2003 R2 on security. Everything is here, but you need to dig in the OS to have them: ·        Having Windows Media Player or Photo Gallery: To have them available you’ll use the great new feature of Windows Server 2008. Windows Server 2008 and SharePoint Resources

With the upcoming launch of Windows Server 2008 you'll start to see more resources related to SharePoint deployments on Windows Server 2008. First to note is since RC0 of WS08, you need to have WSS service pack 1, and as applicable MOSS SP1. To run Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 for a fresh installation after installing Windows Server 2008, install Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 with SP1. You'll find a couple of references on TechNet related to deployment on Windows Server 2008 updated since RC0. WSS 3.0 · Deploy a simple farm on the Windows Server 2008 operating system (Windows SharePoint Services) · Install a stand. [lien] [EN]

Windows Server 2008 Core installation (MSMQ batteries not included)

Windows Server 2008 comes with an option to install just the bare components necessary, something customers have been asking for for many years. I quote from MSDN : "Server Core is a minimal server installation option for computers running on the Windows Server 2008 operating system. Server Core provides a low-maintenance server environment with limited functionality." "Server Core is an installation option that is capable of five well-known server roles: File Server, DHCP Server, DNS Server, Media...(read more) [lien] [EN]

Is MOSS supported in Windows Server 2008

I am getting lot of questions around what is the support available for MOSS with upcoming Windows Server 2008 release. Can we upgrade from win 2003 to win 2008, is 64 bit supported, if so how to install it, what version of .NET Frameworks is required, do we support .Net Framework 3.5? Man .....there are lot of question!!!! Please have a look at following post from the SharePoint team in US with all the answers to above http://blogs.msdn.com/sharepoint/archive/2008/01/16/windows-server-2008-and-sharepoint-resources.aspx [lien] [EN]

IIS7 - Interesting Fact - most wanted feature of Windows Server 2008

Mike Volodarsky, Program Manager of the IIS team has a nice link to share - a survey by InformationWeek - claiming IIS7 as the feature most of them are interested in Windows Server 2008.   This isn't surprising me because of the powerful features IIS7 offers to the administrators (Delegated configurations, configurable Over-riding configuration store, Request Filtering, Easy Remote Management, Shared Configuration, etc) and also being the best friend to the developers (Can extend the IIS manager, plug and play modules into the integrated pipeline, use all major ASP.NET functionalities in the pipeline enabling all the file types, can set the default document of the website themselves in web.config). Also by giving a lot of in-built troubleshooting tools and data such as FREB. [lien] [EN]

Todd Installs TFS - 01 - Installing Windows Server 2008

I created a new VPC using Virtual PC 2007.  As Windows Server 2008 is not a choice for the creation Wizard, I picked Windows Server 2003 assuming that would give me the closest reasonable settings.  I set the RAM for the VPC to 1.5GB and I created an expanding disk with a maximum size of 64GB.  I would have liked to have done more, but I'm constrained by the physical disk space of my laptop -- 100GB internal primary disk (chock full of Vista and all of my apps) and 80GB secondary internal disk. I enabled hardware virtualization and mounted the Windows Server 2008 ISO (which I had downloaded from MSDN Subscriber Downloads) as the CD/DVD drive.  With nervous anticipation (well, not really). Installing MOSS 2007 on Windows Server 2008

If you try to install MOSS 2007 on Windows Server 2008, you are going to get an error that there is an incompatibility.  To install, you need SP1 for MOSS.  I usually download everything from MSDN Subscriber Downloads or install from MSDN DVDs.  Of course, there is not a version of MOSS 2007 with SP1 already slipstreamed on the subscriber downloads.  You could slipstream SP1 yourself, but it turns out there's an easier way.  First, install the trial version of MOSS 2007 with SP1 (32 bit or 64 bit).  After you install the trial version, upgrade from the trial version. · In Central Administration, on the top link bar, click Operations. · On the Operations page, in the Upgrade and Migration section, click Convert license type. Dynamics AX 2009: BI/Reporting/Analysis on SQL Server 2008, and Windows Server 2008 If you've tried installing Dynamics AX 2009, you may have noticed that the Business Intelligence components (Reporting & Analysis components) have issues installing with Windows Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008. (Axel Kuhn posts about his experience here). Does AX 2009 support SQL Server 2008, and Windows Server 2008? Yes, and this support will be delivered to you when Dynamics AX 2009 SP1 is available. At that time you'll be able to install and use all Dynamics AX components on Windows Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008. [lien] [EN]

Installing Windows Server 2008 on the Hyper-V Beta

Installing Windows Server 2008 on the Hyper-V Beta So once you have the Hyper-V Beta installed and up and running you will probably want to start making virtual machines and playing with them.  Of all the possible guest operating systems - Windows Server 2008 is the 'premier' one, in both performance and ease of installation. To install Windows Server 2008 on the Hyper-V Beta you will need to: · Open the Hyper-V Management MMC UI (either from the start menu - under Administrative Tools, or through the Server Manager UI), click on 'New' from the Action pane (on the right) and select 'Virtual Machine...' · This will start the new virtual machine wizard.  After going past the introduction page you need to specify the virtual machine name.
