NASA's Ares 1 Rocket in Trouble Again: Could Crash Into Launch Tower [Nasa]
NASA's Ares 1 rocket may be facing another large technological hurdle before it can take part in the future lunar missions: it's apparently in danger of banging into its own launch tower if the wind is up. Actually, the wind needs only be a gentle-sounding 12.7mph from the south-east to cause problems, and it's all to do with how the rocket's solid fuel motor causes it to "hop" on ignition, before it powers upwards.
Computer models are reportedly showing that during this crucial moment, the wind could cause enough "liftoff drift" that the rocket could get dangerously close to the tower.

Question of the Day: Are Car Alarms More Trouble Then They're Worth? [Question Of The Day]
As I write this post, a car alarm going off in my neighborhood. Yeah, it's annoying, but that's the price you pay for "security." They go off all the time for no good reason—inconveniencing owners and irritating everyone in the area (including writers trying to concentrate on their jobs). While I understand that it may be a necessary evil for someone with an expensive vehicle. [lien] [EN]

TNT Notes Jan. 3: The Portland Trailblazers Are For Real
TNT Notes Jan. 3: The Portland Trailblazers Are For Real The Portland/Chicago game was great. Portland is the truth. What was Ben Gordon thinking on that last turnover before Jack’s 3 point play? As far as Seattle, they have to somehow get consistency or they’ll be in a position to draft Michael Beasley. That might be a good thing for Oklahoma City Barkley on the Chicago Bulls struggles this season. [lien] [EN]

Exclusive Reviews: Ethically Troubling? [Reviews]
Variety's Ben Fritz thinks so. Provoked by IGN's 10/10 rating of Grand Theft Auto IV, he draws a line that seems to connect "exclusive" first-crack reviews of games and superior, almost historic ratings (as is the case in GTA IV.) For example, Game Informer gave Mass Effect a near-perfect 9.75 out of 10, while citing many problems that might otherwise lead to a lower score (and the fact Ben himself doesn't think it even comes close. ANTHRAX SUICIDE CASE RAISES TROUBLING QUESTIONS
Those of you familiar with my work in debunking 9/11 conspiracy theorists might be surprised at my attitude toward the case of suicide by the prime suspect in the anthrax attacks of 2001. In this matter, there is so much smoke that I will not dismiss the idea of conspiracy – not necessarily involving the government but such a theory cannot be ignored – despite my belief that there is usually a much simpler and boring explanation for most events surrounded by conspiracy theories. Tradional media companies are unlikely to be buyers of consumer internet companies for a while

Exits have included MySpace and CNet on the top end to last.fm and Plaxo in the middle and Kaboodle and LX.TV on the smaller side. It looks like there will be fewer such exits in 2009. [lien] [EN]

NASA Launch Complex Gets Demolished, Bounces Back [Launch Pad Crash]
newVideoPlayer("complex40boom_gizmodo.flv", 494, 390,""); We have seen many spectacular demolitions, but the destruction of the Mobile Service Structure at NASA/USAF's Launch Complex 40 in Cape Canaveral, Florida, is perhaps the most striking of them all: instead of imploding down, the whole ultra-strong metal structure falls to it side and actually seems to bounce on the ground—shattering cameras a mile away—looking almost intact after the dust clears up.
