The Future Bill Gates

Lots of news this week about Bill Gates' last day at Microsoft,  but most people don't realize how un-Bill and un-Microsoft it is to spend time reflecting on the past, so the goodbye meeting I went to on Friday morning was a little out-of-character.  (Tears?!) The most interesting parts, in fact, were the discussion about the future.  Bill noted that he expects his priorities at the Foundation to remain roughly constant for the next 30 years!  Global Health, U.S. Education, and Global Development.     Speaking of the future, my team had some interesting interactions with him this week that we'll be talking about soon.  Stay tuned. I guess it was symptomatic, that I had just submerged my fingers in a gooey meass that was supposed to become an elastic, smooth and speckled pasta dough with poppy-seeds (basic recipe: 275g all-purpose flour, 25g ground poppy-seeds, a pinch of salt, a pinch of cinnamon, 3 medium eggs, 1 tbsp sunflower oil, 1 tbsp water, if necessary), when the door bell rang. With a sigh, I hastily cleaned my fingers and answered the door: "Hello? ... Hello? ... Helloooho???" Silence. I despise when that happens. With another sigh, this time a little louder and a tad frustrated I returned to the kitchen and continued kneading the pasta dough. But the door bell rang again. ORANGEBURG, S.C.– So far, so good. Bill Clinton just finished his second event of the day and has been on his best behavior as he pushes through a packed day of stumping for his wife, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton. Here, he spoke to perhaps 150 people, most of them students and most of them black, who were crowded into the low-ceilinged cafeteria of Claflin University. He was a little more energetic than he was this morning but still delivered deeply detailed and wonky answers to various questions. He spent almost 10 minutes, for example, explaining what's wrong with No Child Left Behind. The crowd was attentive but not particularly enthusiastic, except afterwards when a few young women shrieked when he headed over to shake their hands. Few of his answers elicited much response.
