No Christmas Tree for the Simpsons
Every family has that one Christmas story they tell every year, for the Simpson’s, it’s more like an explanation as to why there's no tree. Ashlee and Jessica Simpson never get to put gifts under a real Christmas tree because their mother refuses to put one up. Mamma Simpson had a mishap with a tree when the girls were younger and she's been traumatized since. Jessica recalls, "She put 5,000 lights on a real tree - the first time we'd ever had one. And she's yelling at my dad to help, and he's reading a book. We hear this scream, and my poor mom has fallen off her ladder into the tree, and all you could see were her little feet sticking out the bottom... We have never again had a real tree." What's your family Christmas story? [lien] [EN]

Now Available At Hobby Lobby: Christmas Trees? [Christmas Creep]
Why is Hobby Lobby selling Christmas Trees in August? WHY?! We can understand the tinsel and countdowns, maybe, but !@$% Christmas trees? This picture comes from Hutchinson, Kansas where it will be 92 degrees on Friday. We called Hobby Lobby for an explanation... A disarmingly unseasonal saleswoman explained that all Hobby Lobby locations now sell Christmas trees. They're not real, because real trees die after one month, nature's way of telling you to slow down and appreciate Thanksgiving. The saleswoman found nothing wrong with the new arrivals, and thought it was "great" that the trees were finally available in August. Reader Justin disagrees: From a store I've never heard of called "Hobby Lobby" in the small town of Hutchinson, Kansas. [lien] [EN]
Taylor Swift: Christmas Tree Farm-Raised
Taylor Swift appeared and performed on Friday’s episode of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. The almost-19-year-old country superstar sang her hit song “White Horse” and told a great story about being raised on a Christmas Tree farm. She shared, “Yes! I did [grow up on a Christmas Tree farm], so this is a good season for me. I was too young to help with the hauling of the trees up the hills and putting them onto cars. So, it was my job to pull off the preying mantis pods off of the Christmas trees. The problem with that is if you leave them on there, people bring them into their house. I forgot to check one time and they hatched all over these people’s house. And there were hundreds of thousands of them. And they had little kids, and they couldn’t kill of them because that’d be a bad Christmas. [lien] [EN]

Cablevision Strings Cables Like Blind Might A Christmas Tree [Cablevision]
Peter writes: Some construction work was ongoing in the neighborhood, and it disrupted the underground cable services. Verizon and the electric provider fixed their wires within a day. Cablevision couldn't figure out how to fix their underground wiring, so they proceeded to run a coaxial cable out of the pedestal on my front property, up a tree in my front yard, where it was tied on with some copper wire, thrown across the street, tied to a lamppost head again with copper wire, dropped back down the lamppost, into another pedestal. It sat like this for well over a month and Cablevision insisted there was nothing they could do about it... I made three service appointments to fix it and each time I was told my picture quality was fine. I eventually got them to fix it by lying through my teeth that I was about to cut down my tree. Why We’re Taking Your Light Bulbs Away
The former news magazine US News and World Report kindly explains to the great unwashed why we can no longer have incandescent light bulbs: Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) laughs as Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) looks over her shoulder during a signing ceremony for the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 at the U.S. Department of Energy in Washington December 19, 2007. FAQ: The End of the Light Bulb as We Know It By Marianne Lavelle The incandescent light bulb, one of the most venerable inventions of its era but deemed too inefficient for our own, will be phased off the U.S. market beginning in 2012 under the new energy law just approved by Congress. Although this will reduce electricity costs and minimize new bulb purchases in every household in America. [lien] [EN]
Britney to Light Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree!
Talk about a turnaround — Britney Spears started 2008 barricaded inside her L.A. home with her son while the police and ambulances waited outside. And now, less than 11 months later, she’s got a hit single, an album ready to drop in two weeks, a 2009 tour in the works, and OK! has just confirmed that she’ll be taking part in one the biggest annual Yuletide tradition: the lighting of the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree! Sources close to the pop superstar confirm to OK! that on Dec. 3, the day after she turns 27 and her new album, Circus, hits record stores, Britney will be in the Big Apple for the 76th annual tree-lighting extravaganza. What’s still unclear is whether or not she’ll be performing at the ceremony, or just hanging out with host Al Roker for the NBC broadcast of the event. [lien] [EN]
Christmas Creep Is Mutating At Walgreens: "Halloween Trees?" Seriously? [Christmas Creep]
It's bad enough when people send us pictures of Halloween decorations mixed in with Christmas ones, but a "Halloween Tree"? What the hell is a "Halloween Tree?" Wikipedia says The Halloween Tree is a novel by Ray Bradbury, but somehow I don't think this is what he had in mind. Maybe the Halloween decorations are mating with the Christmas trees?
