Must Read Article of the Day

Must Read Article of the Day This is a big week on Capitol Hill. Both chambers of Congress will be voting on the FY09 budget resolution. Expect fireworks in the Senate as John McCain and Jim DeMint take on the establishment over earmarks. Pay very, very close attention to how each senator votes on DeMint's amendment to ban earmarks for a year. Look at how vulnerable Senators up for re-election vote, and look at how Obama and Clinton vote. Also, watch how GOP leadership votes, especially Mitch McConnell. From Robert Novak's column: Sen. Jim DeMint, a first-term reform Republican from South Carolina, will propose a no-loopholes one-year moratorium on earmarks as a budget amendment. McCain has announced his support for the DeMint amendment and will co-sponsor it. DeMint wants to coordinate McCain's visits from the campaign trail to the Senate floor so the candidate can be there to speak for and vote for the moratorium. [lien] [EN]

Must Read Article of the Day

Must Read Article of the Day Here are a few excerpts from an AP article written by Andrew Taylor: Democrats Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton on Monday joined Republican presidential candidate John McCain and a small band of GOP senators in making a run this week against the billions of dollars in home-state pet projects Congress funds each year. [...]"The jig's up on earmarks," DeMint said Monday. "McCain not only supports the moratorium but he's going to veto any bill that comes to him with earmarks in it. And so, any Republican at this point should say, 'It's time for us to take a time out.'" [...]"This should be a no-brainer for Republicans. It shows you how dysfunctional some of these folks are that this is not a complete layup," said former GOP Rep. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania. [lien] [EN]

Memorial Day Reads

Yet again, my inbox is full of great stories that I just don’t have time to cover individually. Some to check out: Meet Gus Puryear, Bush’s latest nominee for a lifetime judgeship. If this article doesn’t make you panic about the kinds of people Bush is using to stack the courts, I don’t know what will. It is simply and utterly terrifying. Exonerations Continue Across the Country — But Are Innocent Prisoners Ever Truly Free? In a criminal justice system as sprawling as ours, it’s no shock that many prisoners are in fact innocent. But truly clearing someone of a crime they didn’t coming takes a lot more than overturning a guilty verdict. 5 reasons to Digg this article now [Gaming The System]

In "King of Digg," GangstaDawg4Life takes on FroggietheDestroyer! This is the future of media. Kevin Rose conceived Digg, his so-called social news site, as an experiment in democratizing the consumption of news. Rose's formula: Get rid of middleman editors. Replace them with the wisdom of crowds. Or so he says. But while he was starting Digg, Rose was a TV host on G4TV, the cable channel about videogames. That's the secret of Digg's success: It's a videogame. An old-school journalist would wonder: "Why do they keep score on individual submissions? Doesn't that reveal which of your stories were believed most, or at least read most? Damn, there goes my Pulitzer!" But now, Rose and company are fighting with Digg's most active users, trying to blunt their success. Here are five reasons — from a 13. [lien] [EN]

Comment Spam Alert: I Read a Similar Article

Bloggers should now be familiar with the blog comment spam ruse of “X wrote an interesting post” to lure us into thinking this is a legitimate trackback, and now comes “I read a similar article also named…” to lure us into thinking this comment is legitimate. As Tony Hung illustrated, the comment spammers use a technique that injects blog titles into comments. Since the spamming program can only handle a few variables, the comment spam phrasing is redundant, though the spammers are getting creative. Examples include: · I read similar article also named , and it was completely different. Personally, I agree with you more, because this article makes a little bit more sense for me · I couldn’t understand some parts of this article , but I guess I just need to check some more resources regarding this. If you don’t “get” Facebook and Twitter, read this NY Times article

The NY Times is often considered the US newspaper of record, and it lives up to its reputation with an excellent article in today’s Sunday NY Times Magazine about the ambient awareness enabled by Facebook status updates, Twitter and other microblogging tools. Even readers familiar with both popular microblogging tools and their history should read this article. High points: Microblogging enables ambient awareness of your broad friendship group: In essence, Facebook users didn't think they wanted constant, up-to-the-minute updates on what other people are doing. Yet when they experienced this sort of omnipresent knowledge, they found it intriguing and addictive. Why? Social scientists have a name for this sort of incessant online contact. They call it “ambient awareness. [lien] [EN]

Reading and Writing Spreadsheets with PHP

When it comes to playing nice with data in different formats, PHP’s pedigree is hard to beat. Not only does the language make it a breeze to deal with SQL resultsets and XML files, but it comes with extensions to deal with formats as diverse as Ogg/Vorbis audio files, ZIP archives and EXIF headers. So it should come as no surprise that PHP can also read and write Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, albeit with a little help from PEAR. In this article, I’ll introduce you to two packages that make it surprisingly easy to hook your PHP scripts up to a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet and extract the data contained therein. I’ll also show you how to dynamically create a new spreadsheet from scratch, complete with formulae and formatting, and import data from a spreadsheet into a database. [lien] [EN]
