Christmas’ Greatest Hits
Christmas’ Greatest Hits
Posted by Paul on December 21st, 2007 — Posted in Drinks
Since my hit counter is spinning from the number of people looking for holiday drink ideas, I thought I’d put together a list of links to a few seasonal refreshers I’ve written about over the past few years.
Christmas Rum Punch — it’s boozy and it burns! What more could you be looking for in a Yuletide tipple?
Farmer’s Bishop — Variation on the above; put some Americana in your holiday with some Laird’s apple brandy.

Advent Beer Calendar 2008: Day 5: Anchor Christmas Ale
Each year doing this Beer Advent Calendar I've included Anchor Christmas Ale (their "Our Special Ale") and this year I'm continuing the tradition. However, today is also Repeal Day—and not just Repeal Day, but the 75th anniversary of the Repeal of Prohibition—and what better holiday beer to celebrate with than America's oldest craft seasonal? In many ways Anchor can arguably be credited with playing a major role in reviving craft beer in the post-Prohibition era in the U.S., so I think it's the perfect selection for a Repeal Day Advent Calendar. Anchor has been brewing this beer every year since 1975 (this year's is the 34th incarnation), each time with a different secret recipe and with a different tree on the label. I know many people don't consider the holiday beer season ". [lien] [EN]

MyTurn/YourTurn: Grown-Up Christmas List
MyTurn/YourTurn: Grown-Up Christmas List MyTurn: My community was hit with a tragedy this week. In a murder/suicide, a man shot his wife, two daughters, and stepson before shooting himself. While mourning this loss, so many people have been wondering how this type of thing ever happens. What happens in a life to get someone so twisted from what’s normal that he would kill his own family and himself? It’s impossible to know the answer. Since one of the dead is a student of mine, I’ve been trying to help my students and myself deal with the loss. I told my students that I felt the best way for us to respond to this was to try to do good things. If we could learn anything, maybe it is that we should try even harder to love those around us and focus on doing good. I paraphrased something that I read online about how there is no such thing as darkness. [lien] [EN]
The Best Christmas Present Anybody Could Ever Have
My coffee buddy, Butte County Sheriff Perry Reniff helps Alexis Dominguez exit the helicopter (Photo: Bill Husa, Chico Enterprise Record) Today was a good day. No, strike that, today was a GREAT day! The saga of the Dominguez family lost in the snow looking for a Christmas tree hit home with me in a big way, because I had people from all over asking me what the weather was going to do to the search and rescue effort. I was the bearer of bad news, which I hated, because the winter storm bearing down made survival even less likely. (Note: for national/international readers of this blog, this story unfolded in my home city and county) Mountain weather is unforgiving. Fortunately, they knew what to do. They improvised a snow cave, wrote “HELP” in the snow, and stayed put until rescuers could find them. [lien] [EN]

The Early Word: Christmas Break
It’s questionable whether the candidates really will be taking a holiday respite this close to the Iowa caucuses, or if their Christmases will be full of behind-the-scenes strategy sessions. Democrats and Republicans alike tried to shake as many hands as possible, the last day before the brief break. The Times’s Jeff Zeleny writes that Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton hit the trail especially hard. With 11 days remaining before the presidential nominating contest opens in Iowa, followed five days later by the New Hampshire primary, candidates gave a nod to the holiday season through their television commercials. But they devoted their time with voters to drawing distinctions with their rivals and refining their closing themes. As holiday shoppers finished their purchases. [lien] [EN]

White (After) Christmas
Airlines in Denver are canceling flights due to the excessive snow. Up to 20 inches is expected in this next wave. DENVER - United Airlines, still recovering from weekend storms in the Midwest, canceled dozens more flights Thursday as the second winter storm since Christmas threatened to pile 20 inches of new snow on Colorado. Up to 8 inches of new snow was expected in Denver, which set a record for its snowiest Christmas with the nearly 8 inches that fell Tuesday. United, the largest carrier at Denver International Airport, scrapped 66 flights — about 16 percent of its daily schedule at its second-largest hub — to help prevent planes passing through Denver from being stranded there, spokeswoman Robin Urbanski said. It marked the fourth straight day that United had canceled flights. [lien] [EN]
The High School Musical Girls Hit The Gym, Too
Normally I wouldn’t do a post about celebrities under 18, but these High School Musical girls are everywhere these days! I don’t get why they are so popular… can someone explain it to me? (OK maybe I’m just annoyed with them because of the fact that they caused me to spend lots of money this Christmas on HSM stuff for my niece, who is obsessed with them). Anyway, Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale were spotted leaving LA Fitness in North Hollywood Wednesday, trying to hide from the paparazzi. I wonder why they seem so embarrassed to be leaving a gym? They have been spotted out shopping and dining all over town and usually don’t seem to care. WGAE Prez "Hit The Wall" Before Xmas "Momentarily Overcome By Frustration"
Michael Winship, president of Writers Guild of America East, sent the following New Year's message to his membership. It had an unusually personal quality to it: Fellow Members of the Writers Guild of America, East: A very Happy New Year to you all. In spite of our current turmoil, I hope you’ve been able to find some time to enjoy and appreciate the holiday season with friends and loved ones. I hit the wall the Friday before Christmas, momentarily overcome by frustration and annoyance. I think many, if not most of us, have done the same at various points during this strike. What sustains me, and I hope you as well, is our nationwide unity and the surety that what we are striking for is right not only for us but so many others in the creative community – and that the fair and respectful contract we seek will serve as the template for many generations to come. Clone Wars Games Slated For Holidays, Trailers Hitting Spike TV Friday [Clone Wars]
We'd heard Star Wars: Clone Wars for Wii and DS would be hitting this Fall, but it looks like that meant fiscal Fall? A recent announcement's dated both titles for "Holiday 2008." Nothing says Christmas like lightsaber battles - or, as my colleague Luke called it, "yet another third-party action game based on a Star Wars story, only this time with waggle." The Wii version is officially titled Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Lightsaber Duels. Was Luke being a little harsh, or is a true "lightsaber simulator" (which Ken Fox of developer Krome Studios says this game is not) the only avenue to the hearts of Star Wars fans? Waggle-fatigued? There's also a DS version, Clone Wars: Jedi Alliance, being developed by LucasArts Singapore and promising "innovative stylus-based input," and, we're told. [lien] [EN]
August Blahs Hit Hard as Scummy 'Mummy' Threatens Bat-Superiority [Defamer Attractions]
Welcome back to Defamer Attractions, your regular guide to new hits, misses and dead ends this weekend at the movies — and considering our sudden passage into the August filmgoing doldrums, we could use all the guidance we can get. Still, Batman's dark shadow stretches into its second week while another, stinkier franchise will do all it can to vanquish The Dark Knight at the box office. Meanwhile, we fear for Kevin Costner, have a film-festival darling in mind for this week's Underdog pick, and have a bleary-eyed glance at the latest DVD releases as well. As usual, our opinions are our own, but they're also essentially failsafe, so read them and weep! Literally! WHAT'S NEW: Barring some Joker-emulating fanboy's cackling sabotage of a few thousand projectors nationwide, this will likely be the week The Dark Knight slips out of first place behind The Mummy.
