Chili and cornbread are two of my favorite things to eat on crisp autumn or cold winter days. Not only do they fill you up, but they make you feel warm and toasty, transforming the icy winds into a welcome mealtime accompaniment. Sure the weather outside may be frightful, but in here honey, I got me some kick-ass chili and a hunk ‘o cornbread! Delightful indeed. I like to mix bits of cornbread into my chili. Last weekend we received our first taste of ‘real’ winter weather when a snow storm hit Connecticut, canceling ... lire la suite

Michael Pettis submits: Here in China we are beginning a holiday week – October 1 is the anniversary of the 1949 revolution – so markets were closed today and will be closed for the rest of the week, and there’s a pretty good chance not a whole lot will happen on the policy front until the end of the holiday schedule.
Le " Numéro" de Mylène Farmer a arrêté de sonner en tête du classement des meilleures ventes de singles. Une semaine après son entrée triomphale en tête des charts, " Appelle Mon Numéro" chute en troisième [.

Suganya is celebrating a month of Vegan Ventures on her blog. One of my favorite fall dinners just happens to be vegetarian chili, which happens to be vegan, and I teamed it up with some vegan cornbread to make a satisfying Southwest-US inspired supper. A few weeks ago, there was a chili cook-out at my workplace.
John Noonan is quite right about the threat that the military bureaucracy poses to the long-term security of the United States. The situation he describe with regard to the 5th SFG in 2001 still pertains today, only the problem is more pernicious and extends well down into the chain of command.
Farm Fresh and Local Produce - 5/3/08 Can I just say how overjoyed I am that the farmers markets are back again? I mean, the winter market at Worthington was nice (and better than having nothing at all), but there’s just nothing else like waking up at the crack of dawn to head out (in admittedly crappy weather today, it is dark and rainy) to get to the market as soon as it opens for the best selection.
John McCain has recently launched the Spanish-language version of the campaign site (here). There's not a ton of Spanish-language content -- apart from his biography and testimonials from four Spanish-speaking Florida Republicans. I thought I'd provide a quick look at what those commentators have to say.
There’s not a whole lot I wish for in San Francisco. City-wide peace. Perhaps a sharkless surf. A mayor who actually cared about the murder rate. Maybe the odd snowstorm complete with school closings that wouldn’t actually affect me, but for which I would still get up at 6 AM to tune the radio appropriately.
Phew. There now, that's a lot better. A relatively cool 71 degrees brushing against my skin this morning, marking a 27-point drop in temperature from yesterday afternoon. Why, it's enough to make you drag out the pizza stone and heat up the oven, isn't it? On a day so hot that you could fry an egg on the sidewalk or at least on the roof of a black car parked in the sun, it felt pretty silly to be posting about pizza.
Yay! It's hot! At least, it's hot by San Francisco standards, and when I wake up and find the cats have made neat little piles of their fur next to the garbage can, I'm thinking it's hot. Last May, we took our first trip to Mendocino. After breakfast at the most amazing bed and breakfast in the area and a hike along the coastal cliffs, we drove inland along the Redwooded Rt.
I was meeting someone today at a newsstand and had run out of stuff to read (the wait was also longer than I’d anticipated, since he was at an entirely different newsstand, wondering why *I* hadn’t shown). I was eyeing the magazine choices, not all that thrilled with any of them. I thought briefly about buying a NYT, if for no other reason than the crossword.
Hickey and Walters (Bespoke) submit: Economists are looking for a decline of 50,000 jobs in today's Nonfarm Payrolls report.
The Memorial Day weekend is finally here. For many of us, that means it is time to travel and or bust out the grill and cook up some meat. However, with gas prices being the way they are, you may be passing on the road trip this year. So, now that you are free to focus on throwing the ultimate BBQ this weekend, you are going to need some serious equiptment—like the examples found after the break.
Tiger Woods celebrates after sinking an impossible 66 foot eagle putt at #13 during the US Open at Torrey Pines. He’s 32 now and not a kid anymore. The boyish face is still there, unlined but revealing a heaviness that comes with age and experience. His still lithe frame now features a suit of armor – rock hard, sinewy muscle that is fully in evidence only when he swings the club.
I don't celebrate this day, but I understand the significance for many. What surprised the hell out of me was this photo on the front page of the Asheville Citizen-Times. I nicked the photo from the website as I hate scanning newsprint. WHAT? Is that teh gays? The article is titled Father's Day is special for nontraditional dads
Meagan Good celebrated her 27th birthday at the Standard hotel in West Hollywood last night. If you stare really hard, you can kind of see through Meagan GoodÂ’s dress.
With just eight weeks to go before Election Day, the campaigns of Senator Barack Obama and Senator John McCain are mapping out strategies that, they hope, will help them cross the electoral threshold needed to land them in the White House. The Times's Patrick Healy and Michael Cooper report on the two campaigns' approach to key battleground states:
Memorex today announced the SingStand, a karaoke system that uses an iPod or other MP3 player. The device features a microphone, integrated mic stand and speakers. Auto Voice Control' works to reduce the sound levels of original song vocals. Echo ef.
