Chinese Blogger Rejects Victory Lap

After several government officials were fired in the wake of online and offline protests over the official handling of a girl’s killing in southwest China, The Wall Street Journal declared a moment: Aggressive Chinese bloggers make an art of challenging Chinese government propaganda. This week, they can claim a victory. The article was the latest celebration of blogger-fueled protests in repressive countries, a frequent subject on The Lede. But Buxi, a prominent blogger in China, strongly disagreed with the Journal’s particular bit of congratulations, which focused on Zola, a man who blogged from the scene of the riots in Guizhou Province: Zola has played a critical role in past incidents, and arguably “aggressive Chinese bloggers” have forced China into making the reforms we're seeing today. I am a vegetarian, in Chinese

I’m about to begin a 4-city, 3-country, 7-day around the world trip, from Germany to China to Vancouver, arriving home on the morning of Election Day. And you know what I’d really like to find? A printable statement that explains in Chinese that I am a vegetarian, that I don’t eat any animals, including fish or shellfish, or anything made with animals (including fish juice in sauce, animal juice in soup, etc.). Turning to the bloggers

When I read something like today’s news that only 10% of American newspaper editors consider foreign news to be “very essential” to their coverage, I instinctively turn to the bloggers who I know will have something enlightening, thoughtful and sometimes profound to say. And that by itself says a lot about how news is changing. Of course, I did read that particular news in a newspaper, although I was referred there by a blog aggregator. So, I’m not saying that professional news media are unnecessary or add nothing. Not at all. But the news ecology in just a few years has become 100% mixed. Control doesn’t scale

I sometimes put up a Powerpoint (well, Keynote) slide that says “Control doesn’t scale.”The assumption that large projects only succeed if they’re centrally controls led and managed turns out to have been true because we limited the scope of what we we considered realistic. You can build a Britannica using a centrally controlled system, but you could not build a Wikipedia that way. But I know that there are some important counter-examples, so I’ll frequently add, “Except at an huge cost in expense and freedom,” for we know all too well that some regimes have managed to maintain intense control over massive populations for generations. Today there’s an interview in the Sydney Morning Herald with Isaac Mao, pioneering Chinese blogger and Berkman fellow, in which he says the Chinese authorities are unable to keep up with increasing volume of social communications the 108M bloggers. Accountable bloggers and journalists

[Note 5 hrs after posting this: Ethan Zuckerman has just put up a superb post on this topic. I suggest you read that instead of this.] Jillian York of the Berkman Center explains the current confusion about the NY Times’ rather casual suggestion (in a blog post), based on an accusation in a tweet from Omid Habibinia, that Hossein Derakhshan (aka Hoder) has been an agent for the Iranian government, basically ratting out pro-democracy bloggers. The NY Times has now gone meta on the accusation, saying it only reported it because it’s a sign of the discord and distrust, etc. etc. But it’s still a dangerous charge to propagate. Jillian wants to know why we’re blaming the NY Times blogger and not Habibinia. I’ve got enough blame in my backpack for both. But I do think that since the NY Times trades on its credibility. Blogger’s Choice Award Winners Announced

It appears that I’ve come in third in the Blogger’s Choice Awards for the Best Blog About Blogging category. Above me are Darren Rowse of Problogger.net and a newbie on the block, Blogging Basics 101. I’d love to showcase the others who came in below me on the list, but it appears that the counting for next year as already begun. Darn. Among the other winning categories, I’m in good company, including some other WordPress.com bloggers like Icanhascheezburger, and even WordPress.com won second for best blog hosting! I feel like I won twice with that announcement. I’m a fan of some of the blogs that also won, and was delighted to discover many new blogs, including one by actor David Hewlett. Menu for Hope: Food Bloggers give Back

One of the annual highlights in the food blog community is Menu for Hope - a fundraising event that raises money for the World Food Programme, a United Nations Food Aid Agency. Annually, the event is hosted by Pim Techamuanvivit from Chez Pim. Last year, Menu for Hope raised an astonishing $60,000. The funds this year will be going to a school lunch program in Lesotho, Africa. According to Pim, the Lesotho program is focusing on "buying food locally to support local farmers and the local economy". (Do I have to tell you how excited I am about this program?) Food bloggers around the world offer prizes -- everything from cookbooks to fully cooked meals -- that are bid on by donors who donate $10 per virtual raffle ticket. Engadget alert: Chinese tech toys

Engadget alert, this post is just for Ryan Block who runs the killer gadget blog: Engadget. Sometimes I love pretending I work for Engadget and am responsible for traveling the world finding killer gadgets. Hey, a guy has to have some dreams, doesn’t he? :-) So, I was riding the train up to one of the closing parties in Davos when Tim Weber of the BBC introduced me to Feng Jun, CEO of Beijing Huaqi Information Digital Technology Company. I recorded the whole thing on my cell phone. He pulled out of his pocket a book for the Olympics. Ahh, here the Chinese go again being proud of their Olympics, I thought. But then he pulled out of his other pocket a gadget that he aimed at the book and it started talking about what he aimed at. Hysterical Lefty Bloggers Whine For Clinton To Leave Obama Alone

Predictably, the A-list lefty blog-calls for Hillary to get out of the presidential race have continued, notwithstanding last night’s Hillary Clinton wins. Any minute now, I half-expect to read that Hillary’s refusal to bow out is racist. Of course, these hand-the-nomination-to-its-rightful-owner rants come from the same bloggers who insist that Obama isn’t sexist and that the media hasn’t been biased against Clinton. (Americablog is but one example and no, I will not link to it.) Apparently, these bloggers can’t wait for the media to turn its biased dirty tricks on Obama.  Because that’s exactly what will happen if/when Clinton is out of the picture: And that brings me to my latest limerick: The press guys can’t wait to declare That Clinton’s kaput on the air. Blogger Sees Racism in Grand Theft Auto Series

A unnamed blogger who teaches in a Brooklyn public high school sees racial bias in the ultra-popular Grand Theft Auto series - even though he claims to be a fan. Big Smoke Street Corner touches on the writer’s view of racial stereotyping in GTA as part of a larger discussion on race, language and perceptions: [GTA’s] main audience is clearly suburban white males… [the various GTA games] are praying [sic] on the idea of crime-ridden ultra-violent cesspools run mainly by thoroughly corrupt ethnic minorities… Having played pretty much the entire series (being, sadly, the resolute gamer I am)… I can not remember a single positive image for Blacks, Mexicans, Cubans, Jamaicans, Colombians, Haitians, Italians, Puerto Ricans, Chinese, Japanese, one Jewish lawyer (!) and soon in the upcoming game. Shopping for a Blogging, Traveling Laptop

My laptop has reached the four year birthday and I’m ready for a new one. Every computer and laptop I’ve owned I’ve pushed beyond it’s capabilities from day one. I will never forget the first computer my husband and I bought “together”. Within three days, I’d filled the 2 gig hard drive, the largest one available at the time. He went to work and bragged to his co-workers that his wife had overloaded the hard drive before the end of the first week. Some weren’t sure what he was talking about so they just nodded and acted like they knew. The others were left with their mouths hanging open at the thought, and envy, of having access to a 2 gig hard drive. As a photographer, writer, and designer - especially as a photographer - I can fill up a hard drive in no time when I’m photographing or editing images. [lien] [EN]
