Advent Beer Calendar 2008: Day 5: Anchor Christmas Ale
Each year doing this Beer Advent Calendar I've included Anchor Christmas Ale (their "Our Special Ale") and this year I'm continuing the tradition. However, today is also Repeal Day—and not just Repeal Day, but the 75th anniversary of the Repeal of Prohibition—and what better holiday beer to celebrate with than America's oldest craft seasonal?
In many ways Anchor can arguably be credited with playing a major role in reviving craft beer in the post-Prohibition era in the U.S., so I think it's the perfect selection for a Repeal Day Advent Calendar.

Advent Beer Calendar 2008: Day 1: Red Hill Christmas Ale
It's December again and that means I'm running my annual Advent Beer Calendar! Each day of the month I pick a Christmas or similar seasonally-themed beer and blog about it, counting down the days until Christmas, advent calendar-style. It's a fun tradition I've got going here that I look forward to as the end of the year rolls around. This first day I picked Red Hill Christmas Ale from Australia's Red Hill Brewery. Of this 7.5% beer, they write: This strong Belgian abbey styled ale is one of the brewery’s most highly awarded (Silver Medal AIBA 08, Bronze medal AIBA 06 & 07) and requested. Deep orange in colour with a lasting creamy head. Spicy hop aroma from our own Hallertauer & Tettnanger hop flowers with a complex malty finish. [lien] [EN]
Advent Beer Calendar 2007: Day 24: Anchor Christmas Ale
Today's the final day of the Advent Calendar, and you know I couldn't let another year go by without picking Anchor Christmas Ale! This annual favorite (technically called "Our Special Ale")—perhaps one of the most anticipated and favorite American Christmas seasonal out there—is different from year to year; Anchor changes the recipe (which is secret) and the tree on the label. First brewed in 1975, this year's vintage is their 33rd release. Jay Brooks heralded this year's release (and the beer overall) wonderfully for this month's Session; go read that and then go out and pick up a six-pack of the beer for Christmas Eve. BeerAdvocate score: B+ (letter grade). RateBeer score: 3.58/5, 89th percentile. [lien] [EN]
Advent Beer Calendar 2008: Day 4: Mikkeller Santa's Little Helper
Today's beer pick comes from Denmark: Mikkeller's Santa's Little Helper. This is a powerhouse of a brew: this year's version is in the style of a Belgian Quadrupel at 11% alcohol. Check out this description from Liquid Solutions: This 11% quadruple style is a tasty powerhouse. It pours a dark amber with aromas ranging from tropical, cookie dough, and figs. Its flavor is of caramel, brown sugar, plums and spice. A big yummy dessert beer. Nothing "little" about this beer! And it comes in 750ml bottles, so you may want to share... BeerAdvocate grade: B+. RateBeer score: 3.76/5, 93rd percentile. Mikkeller Santas Little Helper [lien] [EN]

Jessica Simpson Does an Ad For Vitamin Beer of the Day
So everyone is writing about this Jessica Simpson promoting beer to help relate to the common country folk she’s trying to seduce with this whole new country image because she realizes being a tired popstar isn’t as lucrative as being the next Dolly Parton, when we all know that Jessica Simpson’s drug of choice is poppin’ diet pills because she just wants to be skinny enough for someone to marry her and have babies with her so that she can be like her little sister. I also think it’s funny that she went with a beer named Stampede to further solidfy just how country she is, because nothing says I jerk off bulls in my spare time and sell their sperm like a beer called Stamede. I hear her next move in getting in with the hicks is to sell her luxury cars and start riding a horse everywhere she goes. [lien] [EN]
Mischa Barton Does Beer of the Day
If you’re wondering how Mischa Barton keeps her luxurious legs and by luxurious I mean sloppy as fuck, which may have been a sign of wealth in a time of famine and poverty (no, not last week), here’s your answer, Beer. Beer is also the way I keep my appealing figure, and by appealing I mean fat and really only appealing to my neighbor who thinks he was a hot air balloon operator because he is crazy and I remind him of a time when his craft was relevant as he tries to figure out a way to paint a pattern on my stomach and tie a basket to my legs and have me carry him into the sky, which always ends up in me calling the police or filing complaints with my landlord…. Advent Beer Calendar 2007: Day 23: The Abyss
Today is my birthday, so like I did last year, I'm selecting a beer that isn't (ordinarily) a Christmas/winter-themed seasonal, but is more of a "birthday choice": Deschutes Brewery's The Abyss. Released as part of Deschutes' Reserve Series, this phenomenal Imperial Stout is 11% alcohol by volume and aged in barrels, and is an extremely limited release—the release party for this year's batch is January 15th, and I guarantee it will go fast. The Abyss has been winning awards all over the place—including the gold at this year's GABF—and comes in a wax-dipped bottle. And just to make you all jealous (it is my birthday, after all!), let me just say that yes, I've drank this beer and yes, I have three bottles of last year's vintage in my pantry. [lien] [EN]
