The inadequacy of Indian police

Here’s more on the Indian police who couldn’t shoot straight—or at all. Once you read it, you will no longer be surprised that the police were ineffective during the Mumbai attacks. But you might be even more enraged about it than before. Here’s a sample: Obviously [India] has needed a much better-educated, better-paid, better-trained national [...]

Indian court demands Google squeal on anonymous blogger [Lawsuits]

An Indian construction company called Gremach is suing Google for defamation because Google so far refuses to turn over identifying information regarding an anonymous blogger who wrote nasty things about Gremach using Blogger.com, Google's blogging service. Unlike in the United States, in India, when a Web site's users break the law, the Web site owner can be held liable. Last September, Gremach bought a large stake in several Mozambique coal mines and a blogger going by the name "Toxic Writer" soon began attacking the company. In February, Gremach sued the blogger. An Indian court sided in Gremach's favor on Feburary 26, ordering Google to remove the defamatory article and ID the blogger. So far Google hasn't complied, which is why it's now the defendant. In the past, Google's jumped at the chance to ID users who break local laws. [lien] [EN]

Mumbai Police Use Truth Serum on Terror Suspect

[Guest post by DRJ] Indian officials claim the “baby-faced gunman” Azam Amir Kasab, the only captured suspect from Mumbai’s recent terror incidents, is a native and resident of a Pakistani village but Pakistani officials dispute that claim. To resolve this and other questions, the Mumbai police announced they will use truth serum on Kasab: “Police interrogators in Mumbai told The Times that they are poised to settle the matter of Kasab’s nationality through the use of “narcoanalysis” – a controversial technique, banned in most democracies, where the subject is injected with a truth serum. The method was widely used by Western intelligence agencies during the Cold War, before it emerged that the drugs used – typically the barbiturate sodium pentothal – may induce hallucinations. Indian Toast?

Bee and Jai of Jugalbandi (home to dozens of drool-worthy pictures) are hosting a new themed food photography event. The event, called CLICK, kicks off this month with the theme: Eggs! Eggs are on the weekend brunch menu nearly every weekend at our home. We are loyal to our favorite dishes, and I love a spicy, savory brunch, so it is usually a choice between Pateta par Eeda, Egg-Onion Float, Omelette, and a fourth eggy dish that I have not blogged yet, French toast, Indian style. This last dish is completely unlike American-style French toast, which is usually rich and sweet, and drenched in syrup or showered with sugar. Indian French toast kicks it up a notch, with flecks of green chillies and cilantro clinging to savory golden brown fried bread (I wonder what the French think of either of these two types of "French" toast). Sled police

“I didn’t wear a helmet sledding growing up. But then again, I didn’t wear a seat belt either. Who knows? Maybe in a couple years we’ll all wear helmets out here.” Photo courtesy of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, which ran the caption: Waukesha police Officer Jake Trussoni uses a radar gun to check the speeds of sledders in Lowell Park. The nannies in Wisconsin have uncovered the latest form of PHFWH — people having fun without helmets — sledding. Well, we can’t allow PHFWH, can we? And so the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel set out to investigate this scandal a-brewing. Apparently the newspaper could not find anyone who died while sledding sans helmet. But it did find a woman who “has speech and coordination issues” after hitting a tree trunk while in a snow tube four years ago while sledding. [lien] [EN]

Jack Thompson Sues Omaha Police Chief over Mall Rampage Records

Three weeks ago, a disturbed young man named Robert Hawkins killed eight people along with himself during a rampage at Omaha’s Westroads Mall. While most of those searching for a cause have focused on Hawkins’ mental health history and troubled past, Miami attorney Jack Thompson sees a video game connection. Of course. Thompson contacted GamePolitics today to say that he was filing a lawsuit against Omaha Police Chief Thomas Warren in regard to the case. Apparently the cops in Omaha haven’t been responsive to Thompson’s video game theories and the controversial attorney wants to force the issue. In his court filing, Thompson writes: These [rampages] have occurred, in part… because of the advent of extremely violent interactive media (video games) consumed by adolescents and teens who use these murder simulation devices to rehearse and prepare for these murderous assaults. The Indians Just Quit US! …Or DID They?

Sioux Indians "Withdraw From the USA"? Or not! Here is the kind of story that really proves how little the MSM bothers to research things, how they often simply print glorified press releases without doing any real "journalism," and how the defective end product gets picked up and regurgitated like it is suddenly a "fact." In this one we have the story of "the Lakota Sioux Indians" announcing that "they" have withdrawn from agreed upon treaties with the US government and that they are now a sovereign nation, no longer to be called citizens of the USA. Problem is "the Lakota Sioux Indians" that have made this announcement are just an unaffiliated group of Indian activists the leader of whom does not represent the official Lakota tribe leadership! Yet here is the news media reporting this story as if all "the Lakota Sioux Indians" have banded together and quit the union. [lien] [EN]

A history of Indian mathematics

As many readers of this blog know, I’m fascinated by the history of discovery. While you certainly can be a good scientist without a knowledge of the history of discovery, there is much to learn from not just what is known, but also how it was discovered. Usually the stories behind discoveries are almost as fascinating as the discoveries themselves. Additionally, reading about the stories behind the discoveries also sometimes are humbling experiences; and makes you realize how much work might have gone into some findings, or how much some other discoveries was based on a collective work many individuals preceding the discoverer. Additionally, reading about the history of discovery also makes you realize that knowledge or discovery was never restricted to one group or place alone, but different civilizations at different times had bursts of creativity.
