Calacanis’s “Web 3.0″ was right?

Jason Calacanis was laughed off the blogosphere for his definition of Web 3.0: “Web 3.0 is defined as the creation of high-quality content and services produced by gifted individuals using Web 2.0 technology as an enabling platform.” The folks at Google may have Been listening as today they launched Knol. “Our goal is to encourage people who know a particular subject to write an authoritative article about it.” and “Knols will include strong community tools. People will be able to submit comments, questions, edits, additional content, and so on. Anyone will be able to rate a knol or write a review of it. Knols will also include references and links to additional information” By chance Jason’s definition completely matches what Google (his competitor now) just launched. [lien] [EN]

The Three Web Activities: Task, Project, and Business Programs

For the web professional, there are various activities that occur on a consistent basis, I’ve boiled them down to three succint types of activities. Working as a lowly production UI designer to managing a global website, I’ve had to do all. The Three Web Activities: Task, Project, and Business Programs The Task A web task is a short term undertaking that could involve any type of activity that supports a website. These could be content changes, database checks, stylesheet changes, or reporting and monitoring. Typically assigned to the content, development, web analysts, production, or engineering team, these are the core activities that keep the website running efficiently. The Project A specific-duration activity, this project involves the completion of a goal. [lien] [EN]

Finally, a Twitter Measurement Tool that works

Update: I’ve just published all that I learned about Twitter on a subsequent post, please read here. I’ve been watching the various twitter ranking, measuring, mashups appear, and most have little utility (other than some of the search tools). I’m pleased to finally run into Tweeterboard, which has metrics (see my profile), rankings, a ‘newsfeed’ of content, and it starts to tie relationships together of different users. There’s even an RSS feed of all the links I put on my twitter account, I often share what I find interesting on this feed, so please consider subscribing. You can check your stats too, it’s much like Technorati, but it maps out your social graph. I’m thankful to the following users for ‘giving me love’. martysmind (40), mickeleh (24), jspepper (21), dough (20). [lien] [EN]

Before you Pitch Bloggers: Three Genuine Tips for Budding Entrepreneurs and Startups

This post is written to help budding entrepreneurs and startups that don’t have marketing resources, consider this free advice. Lately, many startups have been sending me emails requesting that I blog about their product or review it or provide feedback. While I scan every single one, most never get more than a few seconds. I love the entrepreneurial activity and really enjoy seeing this flurry of innovation in our industry. I’m going to provide a few tips to help these companies understand how marketing in the social sphere has changed. What’s the best way to get word spread about your new product or service? Probably the worse way is to insist over and over to bloggers that they would ‘want to share this with their audience’, in fact, for many bloggers, the more you insist the less they are likely to publish anything! Three techniques come to mind that I think are very successful. [lien] [EN]

Some clarity needed

My transition into my new role has been an interesting one, I’m still adapting to the changes both in the day job and how it’s impacting and influencing communications on the open web. Recently, I may have come across in a way that I really don’t want to be associated with. Donna suggests that I was being hollow, and EdLee agrees, being focused on tweeterboard is exciting but lacking depth. Former mentor Shel Israel puts forth a public challenge and Doc Searls suggested that the topics and languages I’ve been leading in conversations were unbalanced towards marketers and not community. I’m in an interesting position, as my mission (the web strategy one, as well as the one at the day job) is to help companies use the web to connect with customers. These are often marketers. How To: Effectively Talk to Execs and Clients about Social Media

I’ve heard a lot of people explain social media and most are doing it ineffectively. As 2008 approaches many individuals are trying to involve social media in their plans for the coming year, in the exception of a few companies, this requires the buy-in from a person of power (and likely someone foreign to the movement) to approve. I know that many individuals within companies are running it up the flagpole, and many interactive firms, pr firms, and social media firms are gearing up for this upcoming year. Background information I hear a lot of pitches, and look at a lot of websites of vendors (in fact, I maintain massive lists tracking of the industry) and know what a good pitch is and what a bad one is. I also have had to lead social media within my previous company, the conservative Hitachi Data Systems. [lien] [EN]

Should Brands Join or Build Social Networks? (results from an informal survey)

Friday on Twitter I posed the question, should brands join existing social networks (like Facebook, MySpace, etc) or build their own social network (like these many white label tools)? I asked my Twitter network: “Should brands Join or Build their own Social Networks?” Here’s the tally from the many responses: · Join 10 · Build 5 · Both 10 · Mixed reactions, unsure, or need more info 6 Within minutes of posting the question to Twitter (an early adopter social media crowd) yielded 31 responses, many which came in to my email account. It’s very clear the responses are all over the map, the market needs clarity. In the last segment, some folks chose to ask questions or suggest that it depends on the situation, so I lumped them into one response group. Although just a small informal sample of the social media elite (Most Twitter users are early adopters) that the responses are dispersed. [lien] [EN]

Some Conversations have shifted to Twitter

Twitter is one of the top referrers of traffic to my blog, over 2000 referrers from twitter to my blog in the last 30 days…there’s something happening there. I’ve also noticed and increase of new users over the past 30 days, feel free to add me as a friend, I will add you back. Twitter is becoming a major communication tool for me lately. There are more intimate conversations being held on this next-generation chat room, and it’s filled with early adopters and those who are trying to reach them. If you’re not familiar with Twitter, my colleague Peter Kim recently did research on it, as well as recorded a podcast. I’ve also got a post up on why Twitter matters to the web strategist –it’s a quick start guide. Here’s a few of the conversations I’ve been having in the last week · Just this morning we were debating the (lack of) user enterprise software debate · This past weekend I met over a dozen people who like the same type of music I do. A very slow week

I’m used to being online 12+ hours a day, just to keep up with the news in the rapid fire tech industry. This week is so quiet, that even press were asking me to see if I had any stories or anything interesting to share, usually they have a story in mind they are on rapid deadline to complete. Many companies launched their features and products in Mid Dec or earlier as business folks take up to two weeks off. This really reinforces why I love the tech industry, as this ‘ketchup week‘, is a good reminder what it’s like in many other industries. I was telling my colleague Josh Bernoff today that if I talk about my employer I get called a ’shill’, if I don’t talk about my employer, I’m “witholding information” from behind the ‘paywall’. Ya’ can’t please everyone. [lien] [EN]
