Man Uses Gun to Blow Hole in Wall for Satellite Dish, Kills Wife by Accident [Oops]

This is what tools are for, my friends. Ronald Long of Deepwater, MO, was trying to install a satellite dish in his bedroom. He was having trouble putting the necessary hole in the wall and, thinking himself quite clever, decided to use his gun to get the job done quickly. Unfortunately, his wife was outside and caught the bullet in the chest. She was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival. On the upside, Ronald now has DirecTV. Silver linings, people. Insta-stalker: "Just spotted Chelsea Clinton twice on Fifth Avenue and 23rd St. as I was coming to and going from the gym. Hot and not at all embarking on the 'my-mom-should-have-conceded' walk of shame." She's no reason to be ashamed! Now she gets to be the first lady president! [lien] [EN]

Edwards Slummy Neighbor Moves, Sign Stays

From the Carolina Journal Online: Edwards’ ‘Slummy’ Neighbor Sells Out Monty Johnson sells land for $1.6 million and moves to S.C. By Don Carrington January 02, 2008 CHAPEL HILL — Win or lose in the presidential campaign of 2008, John Edwards will have one thing to cheer about: That pesky Chapel Hill neighbor that his wife complained about last spring will be gone. Last April, Elizabeth Edwards made national news when she criticized the family’s across-the-road neighbor, Monty Johnson, for pulling a gun on trespassers and for not maintaining his “slummy” property. “I don’t want my kids anywhere near some guy who when he doesn’t like somebody, the first thing he does is pull a gun out,” she said at the time. “It scares the business out of me. Clinton vs. Uncommitted

While the Democrats were making nice last night in debate-land, in Las Vegas, a pretty surprising development was unfolding in Michigan. And we don’t mean Mitt Romney’s win. We’re referring to the race on the Democratic side. Senator Hillary Clinton, who was the only player in a basically uncontested race, was given a good run for her money by uncommitted. With most of the votes counted, Mrs. Clinton won 55 percent of the state. But uncommitted scooped up 40 percent. That's a lot of people who took the trouble to go out to the polls and vote — for no one. Supporters of Senator Barack Obama and former Senator John Edwards, who were not on the ballot, had urged their faithful to go out and vote for uncommitted. Other Obama backers, including Representative John Conyers. [lien] [EN]

BILL CLINTON, SPOUSE IN CHIEF

I have a confession to make to my fellow conservatives: I don’t hate Bill Clinton. Don’t get me wrong. I have a pronounced animus toward his policies, what he stands for generally, and his scorched earth, take no prisoners, political attack dog style of politics. But I have to admit to a sneaking admiration of Bill Clinton, as a man. He isn’t someone I’d want to sit down and have a beer with. This is someone I’d love to go on a lost weekend with. He appeals to the juvenile in all of us men – a rogue’s rogue who I could see playing marathon poker games and going on weekend trips to Vegas. Good cigars, good whiskey, and of course, the guy is a chick magnet. No, he’s no gentleman. But if I ever had an impulse to lose control and regress back to a time when I had few responsibilities and less judgement. [lien] [EN]

Clinton Clings to Wonky Self

SAN FRANCISCO – Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton's big fundraiser here got off to a great start on Friday night. And then, well, the air went a bit out of the balloon. Kicking off the party at the Orpheum Theater was Sam Malone, a.k.a. Ted Danson, the “Cheers” actor, who introduced Mrs. Clinton with the sort of adjectives that dazzled Diane Chambers, Rebecca Howe, and umpteen other ladies of Boston. “Warm,” “wonderful,” “beautiful,” and “intelligent,” Mr. Danson said of the candidate – who, dare I say, from the mezzanine of the theater, was radiant in full blush and wide smile. After weeks of exhausting campaigning, where she has stayed healthy as so many reporters and aides fell ill, it was a sweet tribute for Mrs. Clinton. Mr. Danson's wife. [lien] [EN]

Is Hillary Clinton Secretly Ronald Reagan?

So I was watching "Hardball" tonight, and Chris Matthews turned to his cadre of sycophants and asked the question on everyone's mind. No, not "Why does anyone watch this crapfest?" Instead, Matthews asked whether Hillary Clinton is secretly working to ensure Barack Obama loses in November. This is an oft-repeated trope, that Clinton knows that she can't get the nomination, but that she's hoping to damage Obama so badly that he loses in November, thus allowing her to come back and win triumphantly in 2012. I think the only proper response to this theory comes from the movie Billy Madison: The idea that Hillary Clinton is laying the groundwork for a 2012 revival is ludicrous. First of all, to believe that Clinton is doing so is to believe that Clinton has no actual ideological fealty to anything. [lien] [EN]

Bill Clinton Revives the Bosnia Moment

So much for Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton hoping that she had put behind her those misstatements about her trip to Bosnia under sniper fire, to the point where she even joked about it on a comedy show recently. But seemingly without provocation, former President Bill Clinton has revived the controversial episode, tossing out a few inaccurate one-liners in her defense as he complained about how harshly she was judged in retelling that 1996 trip while she was First Lady. And his remarks have whipped around the Internet overnight and this morning. “A lot of the way this whole campaign has been covered has amused me,” Mr. Clinton said at a campaign stop in Boonville, Ind. “But there was a lot of fulminating because Hillary, one time late at night when she was exhausted. Bill Clinton's Novel Role: the Spousal Envoy

For all Bill Clinton’s experience sitting down with world leaders, his trip to North Korea to negotiate the release of two American journalists is an intriguing deployment of the spouse of a sitting Cabinet member. But it is not without precedent in the delicate sphere of foreign diplomacy. In fact, when Mr. Clinton was president, his wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton, made a big splash by speaking out on China’s poor human rights record in September 5 during a speech at the Fourth World Conference on Women assembled in Beijing. “It is a violation of human rights when babies are denied food, or drowned, or suffocated, or their spines broken, simply because they are born girls,” Mrs. Clinton said, or “when women and girls are sold into slavery or prostitution for human greed.
