Clinton, ‘too serious’?
Athena Jones
ELKADER, Iowa — Hillary Clinton spoke today about people’s perceptions of her and about the importance of a candidate’s relationship with the military.
“Some people think I am maybe too serious a person,” she told an audience packed into an opera house in this town near the Wisconsin border in northeastern Iowa. “Well, that’s not the way I am all the time. But I think this is a serious election, and I think we’ve got to get it right.

Hillary: I’ve Know Mrs. Bhutto Many Years
From a campaign press release: Statement of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton on the Death of Benazir Bhutto “I am profoundly saddened and outraged by the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, a leader of tremendous political and personal courage. I came to know Mrs. Bhutto over many years, during her tenures as Prime Minister and during her years in exile. Mrs. Bhutto’s concern for her country, and her family, propelled her to risk her life on behalf of the Pakistani people. She returned to Pakistan to fight for democracy despite threats and previous attempts on her life and now she has made the ultimate sacrifice. Her death is a tragedy for her country and a terrible reminder of the work that remains to bring peace, stability, and hope to regions of the globe too often paralyzed by fear. [lien] [EN]
NYT Extols Hillary’s ‘Soft Power’ Résumé
From her adoring fans at the New York Times: US First Lady Hillary Clinton (L) kisses Suha Arafat, wife of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, 11 November 1999. The Resume Factor: Those 8 Years as First Lady By PATRICK HEALY December 26, 2007 As first lady, Hillary Rodham Clinton jaw-boned the authoritarian president of Uzbekistan to leave his car and shake hands with people. She argued with the Czech prime minister about democracy. She cajoled Roman Catholic and Protestant women to talk to one another in Northern Ireland. She traveled to 79 countries in total, little of it leisure; one meeting with mutilated Rwandan refugees so unsettled her that she threw up afterward. But during those two terms in the White House, Mrs. Clinton did not hold a security clearance. She did not attend National Security Council meetings. [lien] [EN]
AIM: CNN And Hillary Destabilize Pakistan
A highly insightful piece from Cliff Kincaid at Accuracy In Media: CNN and Hillary Destabilize Pakistan By Cliff Kincaid | December 28, 2007 In the wake of Benazir Bhutto’s assassination, Wolf Blitzer of CNN made much of an e-mail, exclusively provided to him by a close associate of Bhutto and a Hillary Clinton supporter, casting blame on Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf for her murder. We can now understand why Musharraf’s November 3 state-of-emergency decree took foreign news outlets like CNN off the air. Musharraf, who is one of the main targets of the al-Qaeda international terrorist organization, recognizes that the so-called “CNN effect” in global affairs can destabilize foreign governments, including his own. It’s no wonder that he recently complained about being betrayed by the Western media. [lien] [EN]
Hillary Says She Risked Her Life As First Lady
From Newsday: U.S. Democratic presidential candidate U.S. Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY) arrives for a campaign stop at Traer Memorial Building in Traer, Iowa, December 30, 2007. Hillary says she risked life on White House trips Hillary says she risked life on White House trips Glenn Thrush December 31, 2007 VINTON, Iowa - Ever since Barack Obama suggested Hillary Clinton’s eight years as first lady were a glorified tea party a few days back, she’s looked for an opening to strike back. On Saturday night in Dubuque she pounced, arguing she risked her life on White House missions in the 1990s, including a hair-raising flight into Bosnia that ended in a “corkscrew” landing and a sprint off the tarmac to dodge snipers. “I don’t remember anyone offering me tea. Intelligence Sources say Rogue Pakistani Military involved in Bhutto Assassination
[Guest post by DRJ] The Middle East Times reports that Indian and other intelligence sources say jihad supporters in the Pakistan military were involved in the assassination of Benazir Bhutto: “Lower and middle level officers of the Pakistani army and the Pakistani air force were involved in the killing of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, according to various intelligence sources, including members of India’s counter-intelligence service. Well-informed sources have told the Middle East Times that these rogue elements of the Pakistani military support the jihadis and share their extremist views of an ultra-conservative form of Islam. One former CIA official told a Middle East Times source that, “It’s worrying when half of your lower or mid-level Pak intelligence analysts have bin Laden screen. [lien] [EN]
On the Campaign Trail with Hillary Clinton
[Guest post by DRJ] A few samples from Hillary Clinton’s recent campaign stops: In New Haven, Connecticut, Hillary cries at how happy she is to be … Hillary: “Sen. Hillary Clinton teared up this morning at an event at the Yale Child Study Center, where she worked while in law school in the early 1970s. Penn Rhodeen, who was introducing Clinton, began to choke up, leading Clinton’s eyes to fill with tears, which she wiped out of her left eye. At the time, Rhodeen was saying how proud he was that the sheepskin-coat, bell-bottom-wearing young woman he met in 1972 was now running for president. “Well, I said I would not tear up; already we’re not exactly on the path,” Clinton said with emotion after the introduction.” Outside St. Louis, Missouri. Et tu, Hillary?
Would the Democratic candidates for president please stop playing footsie with the Republican party? In a Cabinet-style setting, surrounded by retired military leaders, Sen. Hillary Clinton said the public should ask whether Democratic presidential rival Barack Obama has met the criteria needed to become the nation’s commander in chief. “I think that since we now know Sen. (John) McCain will be the nominee for the Republican Party, national security will be front and center in this election. We all know that. And I think it’s imperative that each of us be able to demonstrate we can cross the commander-in-chief threshold,” the New York senator told reporters crowded into an infant’s bedroom-sized hotel conference room in Washington. “I believe that I’ve done that. Hillary's Bosnia Story Her First Lie In 12 Years [The Bosnia Trip]
Hillary went on Pittsburgh radio station KDKA today to talk more about that time snipers were shooting at her in Bosnia -- you know, the thing that never happened. Yesterday she claimed that she "misspoke" when she said "I remember, particularly, a trip to Bosnia, where the welcoming ceremony had to be moved inside because of sniper fire," as a qualification to be president of the United States. In today's interview she asks for a little slack, because it's the first time she's misspoken in 12 years: "You know I have written about this and described it in many different settings and I did misspeak the other day. This has been a very long campaign. Occasionally, I am a human being like everybody else. The military took great care of us. They were worried about taking a First Lady to a war zone and took some extra precautions and worried about all sorts of things. [lien] [EN]
Hillary's Funny Story About Wanting To Join The Marines [Hillary 4 U And Me]
In light of the Sinbad-Bosnia scandal, Hillary's entire history of funny Tuff Guy statements is being reexamined. This process alone could endure well past Hillary's lifetime. But here's a fun treat: In 1994, Hillary says she thought about joining the Marines in 1975, but then the recruiter made robotic sexist statements about her, so she decided to become a Monster instead. Hillary decided in 1975 that she wanted to develop "some experience in serving in some capacity in the military," so she walked into the Fayetteville, Arkansas recruiter's office. She asked him about some possibilities — active duty, reserves, National Guard, as a lawyer, whatever — and said she was 27 years old. And then, this: "He looked at me, and in those days that was before I learned how to wear contact lenses. [lien] [EN]
Democratic Party Tries to Give Crazy Old Hillary the Boot? [About Time]
Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy, an Obama Guy, today called for Hillary Clinton to drop out of the race and support Barack Obama. He is the first major superdelegate to declare this publicly. And earlier this morning, Howard Dean urged the uncommitted superdelegates to make their preferences public. Unless Hillary gets all of the uncommitted superdelegates, and then steals other delegates, she will have officially lost. But does Howard Dean have a plan for the 150,000 Hessian mercenaries that Hillary has employed for her last-resort military coup? [LA Times] [lien] [EN]
Bill Kristol: It’s over, Hillary
“I don’t want to depress the people in West Virginia. I’d bet on Obama doing well enough to make it a foregone conclusion by May 13.” Bill Kristol will speak at the University of Charleston next week, but he told Jake Stump that the Democratic presidential race likely will be over by the time West Virginia holds its primary in May. Which tells me he thinks Democratic Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois will take Pennsylvania on April 22. Which tells me Democratic Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York won’t be president. Readers can decide for themselves. “It (West Virginia) could be crucial,” said Kristol. “But I don’t want to depress the people in West Virginia. I’d bet on Obama doing well enough to make it a foregone conclusion by May 13.” Is that “Taps” I am hearing? “West Virginia might be crucial for Hillary Clinton to stay alive. [lien] [EN]
Meet The New Lying Hillary Clinton! [Liars]
This saucy minx is Becky Miller, the mayor of Carrollton, Texas, a Dallas suburb with 116,000 wonderful inhabitants. According to herself, she has dated and sung with all sorts of popular musicians from the 1970s, and her brother once died in Vietnam. But perhaps her crowning achievement is that she made all of this stuff up. Becky Miller is the first female mayor of Carrollton, and that's perhaps the only true thing about her. Here's a list of her terrible lies, which are now being exposed by her opponent in an upcoming mayoral election: · She tells people she was engaged to Don Henley, frontman for the "westerny" '70s rock band, the Eagles. Why this would be anything to brag about, we don't know. But according to an Eagles spokesman, Henley has "never heard of her, doesn't know her, certainly was never engaged to her. [lien] [EN]
L.A. Times Still Not Reporting Hillary’s Pakistan Gaffes
The L.A. Times reports on the possibility that Hillary Clinton could be Secretary of State. The paper hits some of her weaknesses, but misses one fairly prominent one. She tried to make foreign affairs a selling point, repeatedly telling crowds that as first lady she had visited more than 80 countries. But she occasionally overreached. Clinton was forced to backtrack after claiming she had to evade sniper fire when landing in Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1996. Archival footage showed a peaceful arrival, not the harrowing scene she described. Good. And? During a conference call with reporters in February, her aides were asked to name a single foreign policy crisis in which she was tested. There was a lengthy pause. A reply offered by one aide seemed beside the point: She had been endorsed by more than two dozen high. [lien] [EN]
MORE ON THE HONDURAN ‘MILITARY IMPEACHMENT’
Not even our own State Department is calling what occurred in Honduras over the weekend a “coup.” What’s more, Hillary Clinton’s refusal to brand the military’s legal ouster of President Zeyala a coup puts her seemingly at odds with the Obama White House. Once again, our Keystone Kops foreign policy makes us look ridiculous when the president brands the action “illegal” while the State Department rejects that term “coup.” Mary Beth Sheridan of the Washington Post - President Obama said yesterday that the military ouster of Honduran President Manuel Zelaya was illegal and could set a “terrible precedent,” but Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said the United States government was holding off on formally branding it a coup, which would trigger a cutoff of millions of dollars in aid to the impoverished Central American country. What Time of Year Is It, Hillary? No C-Word Present in Her ‘Presents’ Ad
I’ve noted previously that Old Media has developed a squeamishness towards describing this time of year in business stories as the “Christmas shopping season.” In the midst of media criticism of Mike Huckabee’s Christmas ad, including the Whoopi Goldberg-Joy Behar exchange on “The View” noted earlier today by NewsBusters’ Justin McCarthy, how interesting it is that one of Hillary Clinton’s latest ads in Iowa joins in the C-word sqeamishness (HT Hot Air, whose Bryan Preston calls it “Hillary’s Unintentionally Revealing Christmas Ad”). The ad shows Mrs. Clinton wrapping presents for the American people, including “Universal Health Care,” “Alternative Energy,” “Bring Troops Home,” and “Middle Class Tax Breaks” (where have we heard that undelivered promise before?). Hillary Clinton Signs on to “Deport the Criminals First”
[Guest post by DRJ] I looks like Hillary Clinton has joined the Deport the Criminals First society but you won’t believe her version: “Alice Hardcastle, 40, told Clinton that her 18-year daughter, Elace, was killed two years ago in “an automobile accident at the hands of a foreigner.” “He didn’t get any kind of hard punishment which is OK with me now, it wasn’t then but it is now,” she said. “I want to know what your view is on the immigration.” After expressing her thanks and sorrow, Clinton answered with the same five-point answer that virtually every advocate of “comprehensive immigration reform,” including all the Democratic frontrunners gives: A litany of tough-sounding measures, followed by a riff on the sheer impracticality of mass deportation, the safety value of forcing immigrants to “register. Hillary Clinton’s Mixed Message
[Guest post by DRJ] Hillary Clinton has a new Christmas ad out and ABC News reports her campaign also registered anti-Obama blogs. First, the Obama attack blogs: “ABC News has learned that the campaign of Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., has registered the names of two Web sites with the express goal of attacking her chief rival, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill. It’s the first time this election cycle a presidential campaign has launched a Web site with the express purpose of of launching serious criticisms on a rival. Votingpresent.com and Votingpresent.org are domains hosted by the same IP address as official Clinton Web sites, such TheHillaryIKnow.com, which was launched with much fanfare this week. The Clinton campaign intends to use these new Web sites to paint Obama as cowardly. [lien] [EN]
Hillary Clinton Tells Common Sense Media She Would Support Video Game Legislation
Last week, GamePolitics reported on Common Sense Media’s survey of the 2008 presidential candidates and where they stand on media issues, including those related to video games. While the initial response from candidates was somewhat sparse (only John Edwards, Barack Obama, Mitt Romney and Bill Richardson replied in time for CSM’s release deadline), Sen. Hillary Clinton, the Democratic frontrunner, has now weighed in. Here is CSM’s question on the topic of video game legislation, posed to Clinton and other responding candidates: To date, nearly 10 states have considered legislation to keep violent video games out of kids’ hands. Would you support this type of legislation at the federal level? What other strategies would you support to keep the video game industry and other media companies from marketing and selling inappropriate content to children? Here is Sen. [lien] [EN]
Hillary: Sounding Presidential
The Politico has an interesting article up about the hostage crisis in New Hampshire yesterday and Hillary Clinton’s response to it: The hostage-taking itself offered a rare, if small, genuine drama in a campaign season governed by strict schedules and scripted stump speeches. And as soon as it ended, Clinton took full advantage of the opportunity she had unexpectedly been handed. In her New Hampshire press conference, she stood before a column of police in green and tan uniforms. She talked of meeting with hostages. She mentioned that she spoke to the state's governor about eight minutes after the incident began. The scene was one of a woman in charge. I’m quite sure that there will be many Republicans who will attack Clinton (below I’ll provide links to some of those who’ve already criticized her). [lien] [EN]
