“Next year I’ll talk with different Linden Lab team members about what they’re doing in Second Life and how that impacts your experience.”

It would be great if this were quarterly. :/

The 5 real blunders of Philip Rosedale's virtual career [Second Life]

Despite a silver-tongued PR team capable of spinning any irrelevant Second Life happening into a New York Times story, former Linden Lab CEO Philip Rosedale couldn't save himself from the downside of the virtual hype cycle. His "life's work" has become a punchline. Here are the five mistakes that added up to cost Rosedale his job. · The big empty. Linden Lab makes money from land sales, a business model which all but guaranteed vast tracts without users. That, in turn, worked against Rosedale's dreams of attracting advertisers. Far too late, he realized that Second Life needed a search feature, so users could migrate to popular spots, where advertisers could target them. Most people logged off bored. As it is, only 600,000 of 13 million registered users visit regularly. [lien] [EN]

Linden Lab CEO stepping down [Second Life]

Linden Lab CEO Philip Rosedale is stepping down as CEO. The Benchmark Capital-backed company is looking for a new chief with more operational and management experience. "This is my life's work. I'm not going anywhere, and I'm still full-time on this, probably for the rest of my life," says Rosedale, shown here as his Second Life alter ego. The story was broken by the Reuters Second Life news center within Second Life. This is likely the only news ever broken by the bureau that you'll care about. [lien] [EN]

Welcome to the new Labs website!

A while back, the Labs team decided that it was time to update the look and feel of our web presence. We took advantage of that work to also do a full upgrade to the back-end of the site. Today we’re proud and excited to launch the end result of that project. The team involved with design, development, and testing work has been stellar, and includes - Sean Martell, Neil Lee, Ryan Doherty, Stephen Donner, Krupa Raj, and Raymond Etornam. This site is wholly their creation and they’ve all been a fantastic (and fun) to work with. The site itself is constructed on a straightforward WordPress Multi-User installation, with two custom themes designed by Sean and developed by Neil and Ryan. All content and customization for each project site can be edited via the WordPress UI, making updating and maintaining the site significantly easier. [lien] [EN]

Linden Labs New CEO Slowly Rezzing [Second Life]

After last month's resignation of Linden Labs founder and CEO Philip Rosedale, Kotaku readers have had only one question on their minds - is there any way I can get Grand Theft Auto IV early? The answer, of course, is no, but the knowledge that the Second Life company shall soon be in good hands will help massage the disappointment out of your collective furrowed brow. Former CEO of digital communications agency Organic Inc., Mark Kingdon is only one alphabetical space away from having an awesome last name. What he does have is an MBA from the Wharton School of Business and a BA in economics from UCLA, and he's just thrilled to be here. "To me, the CEO role at Linden Lab combines perfectly my passions for art and design, business and technology. Until Second Life. [lien] [EN]

The Wired Gadget Lab Podcast #10: Last-Minute Holiday Gifts for Geeks and Wired's 2007 Vaporware Awards

The Wired Gadget Lab Podcast is sponsored by Kensington. It's the week before Christmas, and the Gadget Lab's Dylan Tweney, Daniel Dumas, and Jose Fermoso go over a few last-minute gift possibilities, including an awesome Wi-Fi shirt, the Pyramat Gaming Chair, and Able Planet's Lost Cauze noise-canceling gaming headphones. In addition, they'll talk about Toshiba's insane-but-kinda-green plans for a home nuclear power plant, and Wired's own annual Vaporware Awards winners, which included the Vaporrific Tesla Roadster. Finally, Dylan gives some love to the mythical Spork, and begins to slowly lose the feeling in his lower body when he places an $8000 Falcon Northwest laptop on his lap. We know you're busy and stressed with the holidays, so we thank you for listening. Remember that you can subscribe to the podcast feed by clicking right here. [lien] [EN]
