Spurs guard Manu Ginobili on how the Spurs defended LeBron James in the 2007 NBA Finals: “We didn’t let (LeBron James) get any easy lay-ups. He got two dunks in the four games (in the Finals) and that’s way under his average. We made him set for jumpers and it worked for us. He didn’t have a great series shooting from the outside.

TNT Notes Jan. 3: The Portland Trailblazers Are For Real

TNT Notes Jan. 3: The Portland Trailblazers Are For Real The Portland/Chicago game was great. Portland is the truth. What was Ben Gordon thinking on that last turnover before Jack’s 3 point play? As far as Seattle, they have to somehow get consistency or they’ll be in a position to draft Michael Beasley. That might be a good thing for Oklahoma City Barkley on the Chicago Bulls struggles this season: “Ben Gordon takes a lot of tough shots and (Kirk) Hinrich is a short guy. I don’t think it was fair that (former Bulls head coach) Scott Skiles got fired. I don’t ever say if guys should get hired and fired, that’s not my job. My job is to analyze the game. The person that didn’t trade for Kevin Garnett last year should get fired. You have a chance to get Kevin Garnett and Pau Gasol. [lien] [EN]

TNT Notes Jan. 10th: The Detroit Pistons Defeat The San Antonio Spurs In Big Road Win

TNT Notes Jan. 10th: The Detroit Pistons Defeat The San Antonio Spurs In Big Road Win It’s a Wu Friday at The Commission Last night’s notes. Enjoy. Funny how Barkley’s Sheed comments fit in to our discussion. Smith on the talent of the Detroit Pistons versus the Boston Celtics: “If you look at the ‘Big Three,’(Celtics Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen) no matter if they are better than anyone they face, they aren’t that much better than Rasheed (Wallace), Chauncey Billups and Rip Hamilton, and then you add in (Antonio) McDyess and Tayshaun Prince. (The Celtics) are not really more talented than Detroit.” TNT analyst Reggie Miller joined the pre-game show prior to the Spurs/Pistons match-up. Miller on whether the Spurs/Pistons match. The Joys of Tissue Paper

When you buy a lot of props, you end up with a lot of tissue paper. I like to put mine to use rather that just recycling it. Sometimes, I use tissue to look like parchment paper or wrapping around treats. Sometimes it’s a background, or an interesting surface texture. But most commonly, I use to to modify light. Although my windows in my studio are usually covered with vellum, sometimes it’s still not enough to tone down the light and minimize hot spots. For small hot spots, I like to use glass bottles to diffuse and refract the light… but if there is an overall problem, a sheet of tissue paper can work wonders… even just sort of tucked in. Because it comes in different thicknesses, there’s almost always just the right piece. That’s what I did today when I was working on the cover shot for a cocktail book I’ve been shooting this week. NBA On TNT Notes - The MLK Day Editon: Carmelo Anthony Goes Down; Kobe Bryant and the Lakers KeepPace Ernie Johnson, Kenny Smith and Charles Barkley Barkley on the impact of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in his lifetime: “Even the short period of time (Dr. King) lived, his legacy speaks for itself. Some people will live to be 100 and don’t do anything (in their lifetime). If you get to live a certain part of your life, you should have accomplished something. What Dr. King, Rosa Parks, Malcolm X and all the other civil rights leaders have accomplished will live on into eternity. It doesn’t matter how long you live, it’s what you did while you were alive.” Smith on Dr. King’s legacy living on through sports: “Growing up in Queens and playing sports, the first time that I felt my ethnicity didn’t matter when was when I played sports. You get to see great players and you get to play with those great players. It was great when I got to see Charles (Barkley) and Dr. J (Julius Erving) and Michael (Jordan) and Larry (Bird). Magic Johnson on Miami Heat center Alonzo Mourning’s knee injury that he suffered Wednesday night against the Atlanta Hawks: “Alonzo (Mourning) has meant so much to the game of basketball, both on the court and off. Off the court he’s done more than anybody in the city of Miami, he is a guy who is relentless with what he wants to do for children in Miami. (On Wednesday night) I told him, ‘Now you start your life after basketball, continue on the path of giving back and you can start being a business man. This (injury) just sped up the process.’” Barkley on Heat center Alonzo Mourning’s charity efforts: “Alonzo Mourning is a great player and a great guy. [lien] [EN]

Two From the Sun on the Knicks

This past weekend I was in New Orleans attending what economists refer to as The Meetings.  Specifically, I was attending the American Economic Association meetings, which is the main academic gathering in our discipline.  In essence, about 18,000 economists descended on New Orleans, much to the chagrin of the fun-loving people of the Big Easy.  Fortunately for the city, fans of LSU and Ohio State arrived soon after the AEA meetings began, and when I checked out of my hotel Sunday morning at 4am the party was in full-swing. Before I left Bakersfield I posted “Sort of Defending Isiah Thomas.”  With this column, I had offered at least one posting for 41 consecutive days.  Virtually all of these columns have been as least 1,000 words in length; which works out to more than 40,000 words in a little more than a month. RSS Satellite data for Jan08: 2nd coldest January for the planet in 15 years

Of course we already have had a heads up from all the wire reports around the world talking about the significant winter weather events that have occurred worldwide in the last month, but until now, there hasn’t been a measure of how the planet was doing for the winter of 2007/2008. Remote Sensing Systems of Santa Rosa just posted the latest MSU (Microwave Sounder Unit) data. January posted a -.08°C near global anomaly between -70S and 82.5N latitude (the viewshed of the satellite sounder). That makes it the coldest month since January 2000, and the 2nd coldest January for the planet in 15 years. Both northern and southern hemispheres posted negative anomalies of -.120°C and -.038°C respectively, happening for the first time since January 2000. The United States posted a . [lien] [EN]

Barack Obama's New Advisers Please 'The Sun,' Enrage Those Who Read 'The Sun' To Get Mad [Wal-Mart]

Barack Obama made two moves recently that leave him open to charges of selling out. One, his selection of James Johnson to help select a running mate. Johnson is a former CEO of Fannie Mae, where he helped usher in the subprime lending crisis. Also he's a Bilderberg attendee! The other new hire, though, will surely upset many more liberal stalwarts: Obama named Jason Furman as his economic policy director. Furman is a former Clintonite economist who loooooooves giant retailer Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart, he says, is a boon to poor Americans, because their prices are so low. They keep their prices low, critics charge, by fucking over their non-union workforce and aiding the export of manufacturing jobs overseas, but Furman argued in a 2005 paper that consumers saved enough money shopping at the store to offset the impact on wages. More Signs Of The Sun Slowing Down

In my post from yesterday, I highlighted a paragraph from a NASA press release which touched on one of the final findings of the soon to be ended Ulysses spacecraft mission to study the sun: “Ulysses ends its career after revealing that the magnetic field emanating from the sun's poles is much weaker than previously observed. This could mean the upcoming solar maximum period will be less intense than in recent history. “ A few months ago, I had plotted the Average Geomagnetic Planetary Index (Ap) which is a measure of the solar magnetic field strength but also daily index determined from running averages of eight Ap index values. Call it a common yardstick (or meterstick) for solar magnetic activity. Click for a larger image I had noted that there was a curious step function in 2005. [lien] [EN]

Kristen Bell is Scared of the Sun and Being Assaulted by a Monster in a Bikini of the Day

So Kristen Bell and her pasty fucking body getting sunscreen sprayed on is obviously scared of the sun, when she should really be scared of letting Dax Sheppard inside her, because I hear once you go Dax you never go back because no self respecting man would sleep with his sloppy seconds because no one has low enough self esteem and no girl is hot enough to justify banging someone who has banged him, not even Kristen Bell. The truth is that I’ve never really been overly affected by dudes who have fucked my wife or girlfriends being in the same room as me, if anything I feel like we have some kind of bond and even if we have nothing much to talk about awkwardly, we always have the chick to fall back on and compare war stories about. It’s like having a 2 man on chick threesome, without the awkwardness and homosexual overtones/undertones (I never know the difference between tones). [lien] [EN]

The Sun remains in a magnetic funk

While sunspots are often cited as the main proxy indicator of solar activity, there is another indicator which I view as equally (if not more) important. The Average Planetary Magnetic index (Ap), the strength of which ties into Svensmark’s cosmic ray theory modulating Earth’s cloud cover. A weaker Ap would mean less cosmic rays are deflected by the solar magnetic field, and so the theory goes, more cosmic rays provide more seed nuclei for clouds in Earth’’s atmosphere. More clouds mean a greater albedo and less terrestrial solar radiation, which translates to lower temperatures. I've always likened a sunspot to what happens with a rubber band on a toy balsa wood plane. You keep twisting the propeller beyond the normal tightness to get that extra second of thrust and you see the rubber band start to pop out knots. [lien] [EN]

It’s A Good Thing The Sun Can’t Affect Us Here…

It’s A Good Thing The Sun Can’t Affect Us Here… …at least thats what Al Gore told us. From Daily Tech: Sun Makes History. First Spotless Month in a Century The sun has reached a milestone not seen for nearly 100 years: an entire month has passed without a single visible sunspot being noted. The event is significant as many climatologists now believe solar magnetic activity – which determines the number of sunspots — is an influencing factor for climate on earth. According to data from Mount Wilson Observatory, UCLA, more than an entire month has passed without a spot. The last time such an event occurred was June of 1913. Sunspot data has been collected since 1749. When the sun is active, it’s not uncommon to see sunspot numbers of 100 or more in a single month. [lien] [EN]
