Magic Johnson on what playing in the NBA All-Star Game meant to him: “One of the greatest honors besides winning the (NBA) Championship, is playing at the NBA All-Star Weekend. You get to see great players and you get to play with those great players. It was great when I got to see Charles (Barkley) and Dr. J (Julius Erving) and Michael (Jordan) and Larry (Bird).

NBA On TNT Notes - The MLK Day Editon: Carmelo Anthony Goes Down; Kobe Bryant and the Lakers KeepPace Ernie Johnson, Kenny Smith and Charles Barkley Barkley on the impact of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in his lifetime: “Even the short period of time (Dr. King) lived, his legacy speaks for itself. Some people will live to be 100 and don’t do anything (in their lifetime). If you get to live a certain part of your life, you should have accomplished something. What Dr. King, Rosa Parks, Malcolm X and all the other civil rights leaders have accomplished will live on into eternity. It doesn’t matter how long you live, it’s what you did while you were alive.” Smith on Dr. King’s legacy living on through sports: “Growing up in Queens and playing sports, the first time that I felt my ethnicity didn’t matter when was when I played sports. Magic Johnson on Miami Heat center Alonzo Mourning’s knee injury that he suffered Wednesday night against the Atlanta Hawks: “Alonzo (Mourning) has meant so much to the game of basketball, both on the court and off. Off the court he’s done more than anybody in the city of Miami, he is a guy who is relentless with what he wants to do for children in Miami. (On Wednesday night) I told him, ‘Now you start your life after basketball, continue on the path of giving back and you can start being a business man. This (injury) just sped up the process.’” Barkley on Heat center Alonzo Mourning’s charity efforts. [lien] [EN]
TNT Notes Jan. 10th: The Detroit Pistons Defeat The San Antonio Spurs In Big Road Win
TNT Notes Jan. 10th: The Detroit Pistons Defeat The San Antonio Spurs In Big Road Win It’s a Wu Friday at The Commission Last night’s notes. Enjoy. Funny how Barkley’s Sheed comments fit in to our discussion. Smith on the talent of the Detroit Pistons versus the Boston Celtics: “If you look at the ‘Big Three,’(Celtics Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen) no matter if they are better than anyone they face, they aren’t that much better than Rasheed (Wallace), Chauncey Billups and Rip Hamilton, and then you add in (Antonio) McDyess and Tayshaun Prince. (The Celtics) are not really more talented than Detroit.” TNT analyst Reggie Miller joined the pre-game show prior to the Spurs/Pistons match-up. Miller on whether the Spurs/Pistons match. TNT Notes January 18th: “The Suns Are Softer Than Tissue Paper”
TNT Notes January 18th: “The Suns Are Softer Than TissuePaper” TNT NBA Tip-off presented by AutoTrader.com Ernie Johnson, Kenny Smith and Charles Barkley Spurs guard Manu Ginobili on how the Spurs defended LeBron James in the 2007 NBA Finals: “We didn’t let (LeBron James) get any easy lay-ups. He got two dunks in the four games (in the Finals) and that’s way under his average. We made him set for jumpers and it worked for us. He didn’t have a great series shooting from the outside. I don’t think his teammates did their part either. They didn’t make any shots to create some space for (him), so we were successful collapsing (in) the paint and not making anything easy for him.” Barkley on second year Cleveland Cavaliers guard Daniel Gibson. TNT Notes Jan. 3: The Portland Trailblazers Are For Real
TNT Notes Jan. 3: The Portland Trailblazers Are For Real The Portland/Chicago game was great. Portland is the truth. What was Ben Gordon thinking on that last turnover before Jack’s 3 point play? As far as Seattle, they have to somehow get consistency or they’ll be in a position to draft Michael Beasley. That might be a good thing for Oklahoma City Barkley on the Chicago Bulls struggles this season: “Ben Gordon takes a lot of tough shots and (Kirk) Hinrich is a short guy. I don’t think it was fair that (former Bulls head coach) Scott Skiles got fired. I don’t ever say if guys should get hired and fired, that’s not my job. My job is to analyze the game. The person that didn’t trade for Kevin Garnett last year should get fired. You have a chance to get Kevin Garnett and Pau Gasol. [lien] [EN]
All-Star Game Thoughts
The Western Conference, from top to bottom, is clearly the best conference this season. But as I noted a few days ago, the stars of the West were not clearly better than their counterparts in the East. So we should not be surprised that the Eastern stars prevailed in the 2008 All-Star game. The M2P Was LeBron James, though, the game’s MVP? To answer that question, let’s turn to PAWS [Position Adjusted Win Score]. Table One reports Win Score, Win Score per minute, PAWS, and PAWS per minute for each of the participants in the 2008 NBA All-Star Game. Table One: PAWS in the 2008 All-Star Game Table One indicates that LeBron certainly played well. But he was not the M2P (Most Productive Player). That honor went to (drum roll. [lien] [EN]
Gilbert Weighs In On Trades, All-Star Game
Gilbert’s got a new blog entry out today, first matter he discusses is the Shaq trade: It makes sense to me because they never had a post play. They never had somebody they can throw the ball into in the post. As much as they run and gun, all those years they couldn't get far. They've been having nice records during the regular season, but once playoffs hit they got hurt by post play. He’s a big fan of the Shaq trade, but you can’t say the same for the trade for Pau Gasol: The Lakers stole Pau Gasol. They hi-jacked him. That should be a crime. You don't give away Pau Gasol for Kwame Brown and a rookie. I don't care what's out there, you can get more than that. You gave away a $100 bill and you got back two nickels and a dime. Gilbert talks about teammates Caron Butler and Antawn Jamison making the All. [lien] [EN]
The thing about the All-Star game
I used to take voting standards quite seriously: I’d argue with people about how much you should weight season-to-date against season-from-All-Star-to-All-Star and career achievement. I came around eventually to this: it doesn’t matter. Once you let the fans elect the players, whatever standards individual fans want to use is fine. It’s like any other democratic election: you can tell me what I’m voting for, and you can argue why, but I’m the only person who comes up with a basis for my decision. And that’s fine. It doesn’t work that well, but neither do manager selections, and it means that sometimes Cal Ripken plays when he doesn’t reaaaaallly deserve to on any basis but “we want to see Cal Ripken in the All-Star game again”… but that’s fine. Open All-Star Game Thread
I love the All-Star Game, but without Lincecum in the game, I think I'll just play Civilization all night... Ah, who am I kidding? I still like watching the players I don't get to see that often. Hanley Ramirez, for one, and Joe Mauer for another. I'll watch, and I'll enjoy it. But those bastard Germans want me to give up the secret of Printing Press for four turns of peace! I can't just ignore their bleating for an entire day. I have an image to uphold, and pikemen to build. But I also like that the AL starter's name sounds like an adverb. "Cliffly, he walked through the camel tent with his shoes off..." And Brian Wilson is fun to watch, even if we all know that Giants pitchers give up grand slams to Fred Lynn and 550-ft. homers to Bo Jackson, or they bean Edgar Martinez in the noggin. [lien] [EN]

All-Star game was never going to be a tie
Or says Bud Selig, after the fact. Baseball commissioner Bud Selig admitted he worried about Tuesday night's long-running All-Star Game dragging even deeper into extra innings, and the All-Star managers running out of pitchers. But Selig didn't worry that there might be a second tied All-Star game under his watch. That's because he decreed that there would be no ties. "The game would have been played to its conclusion," Selig told a couple writers standing by home plate after the American League beat the National League 4-3 in 15 innings. "Terry (Francona) and Clint (Hurdle) knew that. They knew how we felt. They understood that." ---- Selig insisted of a potential tie game, "It would not happen again." He pointed out that measures were taken to avoid a repeat of the nightmare of the 2001 All. [lien] [EN]
